Why such hate on the OT DVD set?
Time
1) Some of the edits are good and needed.
2) Some are excessive but okay.
3) Some are just too much and distracting.
4) Some are horrible.

Examples of each:

1) The lightsaber fixes, removing of matte lines, addition of dewbacks, and opening Could City's landscape, adding the correct Palps to ESB.

2) I think that Hayden at the end of ROTJ falls into category two. I think it doesn't NEED to be there. Having the old man didn't hurt the film, but I can justify it in my mind, just fine. The wampa scenes in ESB don't help the film, but they don't really hurt it either.

3) The tentacled sarlaac pit. ...it doesn't really change anything, but it looks kind of fake to me. ...and stupid crap like burping frogs and robots hitting each other in transition scenes.

4) Hmm...the CGI Jabba is pretty bad, and the Greedo scene is abysmal, but the worst of all of the edits is the musical number in Jedi....awful....just horrible. It gives me chills up my spine, because it's so out of place, not to mention that he has every character stop and look into the camera. ...and everyone looks like a cartoon.

The originals had Harvey Dent played by Billy Dee Williams (a black guy), and then by Tommy Lee Jones (a white guy). You'd think that with these movies, where they know of sequel possibility, that they'd at least map out the basic plotlines of a few of them so you know which minor character flaws are going to come back and bite you in the ass.

MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)

Lines I suggest be cut are in [brackets]. Lines I wish were never imagined in [[double brackets]].

---

(Padme enters. Anakin is tinkering with something. He is obviously very disturbed.)

- I brought you something. Are you hungry?

- The shifter broke. Life seems so much simpler when you're fixing things. I'm good at fixing things. [Always was.] [[ But I couldn't. Why couldn't I save her? I know I could have! ]]

- Sometimes there are things noone can fix. You're not all powerful [Ani]. [I cut "Ani" because of overlap with next line.]

- [[ Well I should be! Someday I will be. I will be the most powerful Jedi ever! I promise you! I will even learn to stop people from dying! ]]

- [ Anakin!?! ]

- It's all Obi-Wan's fault! [[ He's jealous! ]] He's holding me back! [Can insert "Anakin!?!" instead of "He's jealous!"]

- What's wrong Ani? [Or alternatively, replace this line with "Anakin!?!"]

- [[ I ... ]] I killed them. I killed them all. [They're dead. Every single one of them.] [[ And not just the men. But the women. And the children too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals! I hate them! ]]

(He sits on the floor. Padme crouches beside him.)

- I'm a Jedi! [I know I'm better than this.]

(Padme consoles him.)

I don't think you can cut this scene entirely, as I agree that it's pivotal to show his gradual change. I enjoyed this scene, but I see that it could be "streamlined", for lack of a better word. I think that one of the worst lines here is Amidala's "What's wrong Ani?" Keep in mind that this comes right after his mother dies. It seems a little insensitive and out of place for her.

...there's another scene like that where Yoda says "seeing you again brings warm feelings to my heart." ...and she just ignores him.

How is it that the whole fanbase can see these little oddities about the forced speech, but trained editors and filmmakers can't?

Things you DID like about Episode III
Time
I liked:

- The opening crawl.
- The first shot of the film, dropping onto the space battle.
- How technology with ships starting looking more like the original trilogy.
- The addition of Tarkin. Extra points for it not being completely IN YOUR FACE.
- How Anakin shut the door before busting up Gunray.
- The slaughtering of the younglings.
- The way that order 66 was shot and scored.
- Yoda busting up the two Emperor's guards upon arrival.
- The first half of Anakin's fight w/ Obi-Wan, before they got on the floating chunks in the lava.
- Vader choking Padme.
- The first time the Emperor put on his cloak, after getting deformed. (gave me chills)
- The closing scene. I disagree that it should be switched with the Tarkin scene. I think the story continues around Luke, so it was important to end on him, as a pointer to the future.

MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)
Time
Magnoliafan,

I watched "Balance of the Force" over the weekend, and would like to give you some feedback, after I've been discussing it with friends and reading up on your stuff.

Before I start, I'd just like to get out that I think you did a fantastic job with your source material, so I'm not going to go over every little thing I liked.

Unfortunately, my main beef with the prequel trilogy can't be fixed with editing techniques. I think that Lucas took a step backwards by adding in the supporting cast from the original trilogy, where they didn't fit. The idea of C-3P0 being made by Anakin, R2-D2 being partnered with Anakin and Obi-Wan, Chewbacca and Yoda being friends, Anakin being friends with Greedo, Boba Fett being the same as stormtroopers, etc.... just didn't sit right we me. It seemed as if the entire universe consisted of 12 people over 60 years...he made too much of an effort to tie up things that were otherwise unrelated. Before it was all over, I expected to see a baby Lando somewhere.

I do think that Lucas did a few nice incorporations, though...especially in Episode III, with the subtle addition (I'm surprised Lucas didn't have him walk in front of camera and wave) of Tarkin, and the cut scene involving Mon Mothma. ...some early Ackbar stuff would've been nice, too

That said, the movies were still enjoyable for me, despite their cheesynees, due to childhood attachment. Your cuts take away the obvious cheese, but some things remain.

Regarding the added scenes from the DVD, I felt that some were apropo to add, others not.
- I feel the scene added in the pod racing segment with the Tuskin Raiders and Jawas works well.
- I think that the scene of the submarine arriving and falling off the cliff adds nothing to the story, hurts the character that you've made for Jar Jar, and ultimately hurts pacing. One of the biggest problem in Episode I is that it takes forever to get through the Pod Race, and the story drags.
- The addition on the scene before the race is good, but Anakin's "wake up acting" and head shake thing are unbearable.
- I think that you could stand to lose the scene where Quai-Gon checks his blood. It adds nothing and again, slows us from getting off Tatooine.
- Watto's new lines are great.
- I also think that some more of Jar Jar's goofiness can be removed from the final battle.

You really have your work cut out for you in Ep III. ...much less cheese to delete, and the pacing works as is, for the most part, but you'll have to change the ending entirely. I'm interested to see what you'll come up with.
