STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

Hello Adywan and team,

I haven't posted in many years. Not since initial changes were debated. But I have been watching and waiting, and enjoying this thread ever since. I just want to express, and I think I speak for all lurkers, the appreciation and respect we have for you and the crew. We wait with baited breath. Good god, does this thing look like its gonna be amazing!

I can't wait for Episode 7 Revisited! When you start building the mo-cap studio, give me a shout.

(You don't need a crystal ball to predict that one!)

Great job on everything so far.

Thanks for the commitment,

DS

ok, well here's the preview with the proper colouring (well apart from the very last shot which i haven't finished work on yet). there's also a new shot or two in there that i have just finished. I'm also adding this to the first page for ease. Oh, and still no footprints in the snow. Its just impossible to track the motion with the tools i have on that shot to add them but the boom mic is gone

2 MINUTE PREVIEW WITH CORRECT COLOURING

Excellent so far. The new extras and colororation sell the scenes so far. I am expecially happy to see more rebels manning the base. I seem to see more detail that I am used to in the Star Destroyer as well, but it could be wishful self-delusion. Great stuff!

I was thinking one night about Vader's meditation chamber. This is completley a shot in the dark, but when Vader's helmet is being placed back on his head, there can be robot arms adjusting his mask and tubes coming out of his head. Then they all retract right before the helmet latches on. It's hard to explain, and probably harder for Ady to accomplish

PLUS

I know this is an old subject, but seeing vader in his chamber remembering padme is... now that I think about it, a stupid idea considering he is more machine then man, and can't really think on his own at this point.

I dont know. Were you thinking about something in the chamber scene ADY?

I posted something similar earlier. I would love to know what you are thinking for this scene.

Im still under the impression that PAR2 recovery files are magic!

I think gnomes are involved somehow.

Anyone have a quick, concise layman's explanation of how par2 files work? And how exactly do they get those gnomes into your computer to fix everything? :)

Gnomes... oh my... can you beleive this loser? GNOMES! What a moron!

Everyone with a tech degree knows it is 100% gremlin based magic... That is why you always end up with one part too few pars to recover! Although it helps to sacrifice a goldfish on your keyboard before beginning invoking that particular necromancy.

I am not sure if someone has mentioned this suggestion before, but have you thought about doing some bluescreen shots with Studio Scaled models to help create some of the FX shots you are planning to do?

I know there are some really talented people who have already built and painted a lot of SW models that are almost identical to the originals.

Maybe you could put out a feeler if there is anyone with such-and-such model, which they would be whiling to allow you to borrow for your shots. In return you can get a nice FX shot, and they can say their model is 'screen used' in Star Wars Revisited. Just a thought.

I tried that with ANH Revisited and it just didn't work. New model shots would really need to be done on film and not video because they just don't match and also done with the correct motion control cameras & rigging.

Anyway here is a short comparison clip showing a short scene of the Hoth battle with the first pass colour correction and the original 2004 DVD colour. Don't forget this is just the first basic colour pass. many elements have to be done later like missing sky colour (which in some shots is also missing from the 2004 DVD's). You can also see just how green C-3PO is in the DVD versions

COLOUR CORRECTION VISUAL COMPARISON XVID 25mb Approx

If you want to try again, get me a 720p or 1080i original green screen shot on HDV (or that Panasonic thingy) and I can match the grain and junk for you and send you nice, ready to use Alpha channeled mov, Ady. Dont even need to move the cam if you frame it fully.

I wish i could get hold of a Pre-THX release of ESB so i can see what the colours looked like before any form of correction was done, but that's going to be impossible. I never got this stressed out on the first colour pass with ANH. Maybe ESB isn't going to be as easy to do as i first thought.

point me to some links of the version you want.
if thats on laserdisc, i'll get it..
i have the ability to do video capture now..

I have the "Definitive" big box LD and the "Faces" LD set, but they are both THX-ed. If they will be of help, I am willing to loan them to ya. (I want them back though!)

Have you looked into any of the Malaysian or Chinese bootlegs of the old school OT? I have no idea what kind of master they are from, but I have them too. Probably an LD in their lineage somewhere.

Also, I MIGHT be able to get ahold of a 3/4 inch tape copy that the father of an old buddy made of ESB when it first came out (in other words, a bootleg cam of the original release on old broadcast equipment), but it would only be good for reference IF he was willing to pony it up due to the age of the tapes, and I have NO way to play it back. I will ask... beg actually... He also has "the Revenge of Jed and I" as it is labled, and I can tell you that THAT one looks like crap on modern equipment... I have a copy on VHS. All soft and washed out...

Hey Ady!

Some thoughts - only thoughts...

/braindump

OK... the Vader Head reveal... in "Building Empire" we see that he is supposed to be breathing off a ventilator as the helmet comes down. This is not too clear, and should be (kinda) easy to stick in, maybe even using a still? Makes it seem like Vader is more helpless without the armor.

Also, the back of Vader's head looks mighty good for a person who got burned that badly, and it does not match up with ROTJ. What do you think about adding a little extra nastiness to his noggin to make it look more forbidding. I mean, I remember thinking the scar was cool, but since ep6 and ep3, I think that if they got his skin that smooth, the scar should have been a cakewalk for Poppa V's plastic surgeon. And I know people who got skin grafts and they are not that smooth.

/end braindump

PS. Ep4 Rev rocked my world. Do as you will. You are as a god to me. I am not fit to lick your car's tires.

Hey there Adywan,

First of all, check your PMs. I wrote you with a personal request. No suggestions. I tried, but could not come up with anything better than what you put out on the dvd5 that was worth your time.

I HATE FLAMERS AND JERK-MAILERS!

In my world (I am a director/producer of various and sundry awful, yet profitable crap, but I am moving into features now) the people who have ZERO creativity and drive are the ones who bitch the most about someone else's passion. EVEN WHEN IT IS GIVEN TO THEM AS A GIFT AS THIS WAS.

MOST of these types are mean spirited, frustrated little jerky children (less than 20 usually, less than pubescent sometimes) who think they know more than you, but can't back it up. A true evaluation or mature critique would go more like, "That was ok, but it could have _____. This was just off... maybe if you moved the scene X? I hate the ending... More cowbell!" That kinda thing. In other words, OFFER AN ALTERNATIVE TAKE ON IT. Anything else is just complaining, and we (speaking for the group, I hope) frankly don't care about complainers and neither should you.

I once got called a "f-ing geek virgin" (for the record, I am happily married to a real, by God, pretty woman (not that sex matters) who thinks I rock) by a skinny, shirtless, toothless dude in a Nascar hat and cutoffs on the way to a costume contest at Celebration 4. He had his "posse" of equally dirty, smelly, skinheads with him. The theme from Deliverance should have been playing in the background and that redneck had the nerve to try to pick a fight with a dude with a WHOLE GROUP (30 plus) of people in body armor. We instantly surrounded him and started in on his crappy jailhouse tattoos, while his buddies ran off a little ways. The dude actually started crying like Carrie in the shower scene after we started in on HIS appearence. When he tried to get away, he was tripped, oh, 6 times on the way out as he wailed obcsenities and his friends yucked it up. He was not too smart huh?

FYI, the line that got our skinny, half naked redneck crying:

Did you ever get tired of your mom yelling "Get off your 12 year old sister... you're crushing her smokes!"

I thought that was pretty good and have used it since. It works well in "deep south" America as well as LA.

In other words, I GUARANTEE these flame e-mailers would NOT stand up to inspection at all. They never do.

My point is, the talentless and ignorant of the world are the most negative in their reactions and attitude. These are the people who would exert CRAZY amounts of effort to tell a television station that a show offended them and they should pull it off the air rather than change a channel, ya know?

In other words, I don't sweat the people who complain like that, yet could NEVER COME CLOSE TO ANYTHING ADYWAN (or anyone else) HAS DONE! They simply can't stomach change because it hurts the brain to think of anything without judging it against the accepted standard as if the current standard cannot be improved upon.

And to the full on flame posters themselves:
Fine... Don't download it. We don't want you anyway... But please upload some of your work so we can critique it before you disappear. Anything will do, as long as it plays back in full motion.

BUT IT HAD BETTER BE GOOD AND WORTHWHILE IN OUR EYES OR YOU SHOULD BE HUNTED DOWN!

Go away, ya nasty jerks... we will just be ignoring you now on anyway.
So there. nah. :p

As for suggestions, I am saving it for Empire, and only sending it when you ask.

Feel better soon, oh talented one. I just went under the knife myself.

Start RE-teriorating soon, dangit. You have a lot of people on your side. And frankly, we need our Adywan version of Episode 12 - Balance of the Force - directed by Jett Lucas - REVISITED HD4x immersive chip implant with revised and corrected tactile smell-o-vision (the Jawas smell more Ronto-ier!)... or whatever these dang whippersnappers come up with!

Hee hee!

The 40 year old curmudgeon,
DarthSmokey

Adywan you utter bastard...

When you add this kind of prank to my high blood pressure, it is a wonder I don't stroke out! (at least they could bury me with a DVD9 of Star Wars Revisited, but NOOOOOOOOOO... You go all evil before you let it loose on the public!)

But SERIOUSLY thanks for the effort. Any input I can offer, I will!

005 on the other hand... (grrrr)

Kiddin. You had me for a moment there.

I just wanted to throw out a HUGE thank you for the effort.

Here is some background:

I have been a Star Wars Fan since 5-25-77 when my mom dropped me off to watch a matinee while she went shoe shopping. I caught the first showing, opening day with about 25 other people. After the movie I RAN outside, grabbed my mother and dragged her in to see it again.

I never forgot that feeling of... connectedness? Is that right? Awe? Wonder? Something...

I caught the rest of the flicks on opening day, first show every time since. (Is there a club for first show goers?) Have been to all the Celebrations, etc... In short I am a Star Wars fan.
But, if I am honest with myself, NONE of the movies matched the impact of Ep4 on me. The Re-issues of the just ticked me off more than anything (I mean c'mon, Greedo did NOT shoot first)... The prequels did not even come close to what I REALLY wanted outta Star Wars.

So anyway, I found out about this project when it hit the newsgroups. After watching the XVID, to use the words of Vader, I "felt something I haven't felt since...."

So... thanks...

It seems trite, but you brought a childhood memory up to date in a way that it's creator couldn't. or wouldn't. or something...

I just wanted to let you know that your two year investment shows. You can tell this was a labor of love. Can't wait to see what happens next!

DarthSmokey

PS. Even my wife (a romantic movie buff who thinks Star Wars is a silly little sci-fi film) liked what you did to the point that I caught her watching the DVD yesterday without me, totally entranced. That is what spurred this posting.

As a professional lurker to these boards, I feel inwardly outraged to be forced out into the open to do this....

PLEASE BE KIDDING!!!! PLEASE!!!!! DEAR GOD BE MAKING A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE JOKE!!!!! ARRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

(ahem)

Thank you,
DarthSmokey

PS I understand the feeling if you really drop the project. And Star Wars Revisited has reinitialized my inner uberfan. That "noooooooo" kinda threw a bucket of water on the fire for a while.... Thanks for that.
