In the first comparison, some objects on the edge of the frame seem to have been warped, or shifted horizontally. It’s also noticeable in comparisons 6, 11, 13, & 14

I disagree that "the old EU was never considered canon." Everything from Zahn onwards was certainly considered canon. As I recall, it wasn't until 2008 clone wars that the idea of the different "levels" of canon was introduced. That show set such a giant precedent of overwriting EU it was covering the same ground as (in this case the previous clone wars stuff from 2002-2005).

There are no different levels of canon. Am I wrong? (true question, not playing smartass here.) To me there is canon and not. So it you say that the official canon/ not canon "rule" has officialy started in 2008, then everything E.U before 2008 cannot be considered canon or not in a way, because "canon" did not exist. What existed though is words from Lucasfilm saying that the stories of these books could possibly not be taken as a basis for future movies if Lucas wanted to make more.

There are, or at least were, 6 levels of canon: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Canon#Canon_in_the_Holocron_continuity_database

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

I found the Star Wars Despecialized Edition making of video on youtube very fascinating. Are there going to be videos explaining the sources for Empire and Jedi too, or was it just a thing made for the Star Wars Depescialied Edition?

I hate to be the one to say it, Harmy, but if there are going to be more, you might find someone here that's better suited for voiceover work. You're the king, but even kings need heralds.

Or maybe I'm just an asshole.

Really looking forward to breaking in my new apartment next week with the MKV! Excellent work, once again.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?
Time

The only changes I would keep:

SW

  • cell block corridor
  • tractor beam language
  • "Close the blast doors"
  • Biggs scene

ESB

  • Emperor's new face/voice

ROTJ

  • victory celebration

I'm really not opposed to a fully specialized edition being officially available, but only if it's done correctly and the OUT is given equal or greater attention. Neither of those are the case, currently.

If they do release the OUT  I hope they go all out on the package and not something so ugly as that Complete Saga set.

Idk about you, but if there's one thing that truly encapsulates what the Star Wars Saga is all about, it's a picture of Jake Lloyd... ;)

I always thought it would've looked nicer if they'd added a little speech bubble above his head that said, "Now, this is podracing!"

Pardon my ignorance, but I've skimmed the last few pages and have yet to see anyone mention going to the Atlanta screening. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Pages 11-14. I attended the event and to the best of my knowledge, the DCP was made from the 2011 Blu-ray release of the Special Edition. It is a dead-end as far as this thread goes and no longer worth mentioning. Sorry.

Of course, there is the possibility that Disney took RMW's supposed new scan, shat on it, and then sent it to the theater, making the screening still a relevant topic. /s

Disappointing about the blu-ray, but this means that whatever they played at the Plaza Atlanta wasn't the new 4k scan right?

But we really don't know that this wasn't sourced from the new 4k scan, do we?  How could we be sure they didn't just recreate the 2011 version from the new scan?

No, this was 100% 2011 Blu-ray and now completely unrelated to the 4K RMW scan this thread is about. It was identical to the '11 in changes/effects, and I believe as well as in coloration and cropping, though I'm no expert. I don't think the Plaza thing is worth discussing any further as it's only going to distract from the real conversation of what we think the RMW website listing means for the future of the trilogy: which negatives did they scan, and who's doing what, if anything, with said scan?

How did they react to Ben's new call?

It sort of felt like everyone was thinking "Holy shit, why is there a dying giraffe in the lobby and can someone make it stop?!" That rock, though. I was so sure it was '97 up til then. I had my suspicions, but I didn't want them to be true. The clarity was excellent, as it is on the blu-ray, but the details didn't pop like they do in Harmy's, and of course the colors were too unnatural.

Guys, I'm sorry to say that the Plaza screening was a dead end. Blu-ray transfer through-and-through. The rock, the call, the slug, the Biggs, it was all there, and in disappointing colors. If there's a new 4K scan out there, it's completely unrelated to tonight's showing.

It was still a great experience, and I assure you Greedo's shot received a rousing chorus of boos. It's 2014 and people know what's up. And as long as you guys keep it up, an official OOT release, as convenient as that would be, will mean less and less. That being said, I'd be surprised if Disney misses this kind of a chance to cash-in.

Does this mean there's now a better chance that the RMW scan could be OOT? Weren't we assuming '97 because we thought it tied into the Plaza? Or did the screenshot comparison rule out OOT?

Unfortunately, I don't have that shirt in particular, but I am going to try to make time to wash mine so I can wear it - I already wore it this week.

As for what to look for, I'll be specifically noting the fanfare, the beginning of the crawl, Jabba if he's even there, Luke's saber on the Falcon, the corridor of the detention block, and the language of the tractor beam settings. Other than that, the Mos Eisley and BoY CGI shots will be a dead giveaway. There's also that new rock in front of R2 if it's somehow kin to the BD. Coincidentally, I downloaded and watched Harmy's Respecialized earlier today, so I think I'm good. Anything else I should look for?

Gotcha! Thanks for the instant feedback. Looking at your versions next to the Blu-ray, the despecialized seem surprisingly detailed, but also more grainy. Could you briefly explain, to the layman, what causes the greater amount of noise (if that's the proper term)? I've been wondering since watching SW v2.5 the first dozen times.

Hey, Harmy!

I really appreciate your work and I'm looking forward to the release of v2.0 or 2.1 or whatever you're calling it.

I was watching the workprint alongside the Blu-ray and noticed a strange white spot on the starfield in the first Executor shot from 28811-28823 (00:20:00:10-00:20:00:22) just below the far right Star Destroyer. Someone may have already pointed it out or maybe you left it in intentionally, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks!
