Project Ewok | Caravan of Courage & The Battle for Endor - 4K Upscales (Released)
Time

I know this is off topic, I am posting this here because it does not deserve its own thread. Does the laserdisc have the following scenes?

  1. When being chased by Terak’s men, Wicket races for Noa’s house but Noa tells him the only chance they’ve got is the star cruiser.

  2. the men go inside and burn down Noa’s house.

  3. Cindel’s lines: “Do something, Wicket! Use your sling! You hit the ring!”

This is my absolute dream. I don’t even know how you can find the 35mm films.

Beauty and the Beast is the one on this list that I’m dying to find. This title has suffered the most among the renaissance era after remastering for DVD and Bluray since the Laserdisc release.

The original academy ratio of 1.37:1 has been changed to 16:9, causing cropping and losing parts of the picture. The color changes to brighten the film also are drastically different and looks awful.

Please let me know how this process can be done. And I’d like to know how I can contribute.

Thanks

Beuty and the beast is 1.66:1 not 1.37:1

Teletubbies Roku Channel Preservation (not yet started) (Help Needed)
Time

This will be a side project for now because my priority is my star wars holiday special project

Teletubbies deserves to be in the best possible quality, it’s no doubt the creepiest and trippiest children’s show of all time. The official youtube postings were the best I was aware of, But the thing is they basically cropped the tops and bottoms, made the sides slightly open matte, then stretched it the rest of the way to fill the screen. Then also they regraded the show to make it more colorful, so basically those have some pretty big problems, but recently I came across “The Roku Teletubbies Channel”, which as you might guess airs Teletubbies all day. The episodes are in 4:3, 25 FPS, and have the original color grading.

Sadly I can not record these in the best possible quality because of my NTSC computer monitor and my macs inability to record audio, the audio part does not really matter because it would probably be best if they were synced with the youtube postings audio in the end anyways. So I think it would be best if someone with a PAL monitor and good internet would record these. Then I can sync them with the youtube audio, encode them, and also recreate the US versions to also have as sort of a bonus feature on this release.

PM me if you have the PAL monitor, good internet, and are interested.

what is a Broadcast master?

In general/simple terms… TV stations used (much) higher end media (tapes) compared to home recording (VHS, Betamax). You’ve surely seen those bits of “reveal footage” from news programs and game shows and such where you get a glimpse of those HUGE studio cameras (which has always been the case). Those million-dollar monster cameras wouldn’t be recording to just flimsy little VHS tapes and their weak signals, right? (And that’s putting aside that TV stations were of course recording way before VHS or Betamax existed.) Yes, the resolution was still the same — NTSC in the U.S. — but there was much more detail packed into the signal over VHS and other home formats.

(Taking about after things switched from reel to reel…) These TV broadcast cassettes generally looked similar to home VCR tapes, but were larger, the tape wider, more inches of tape moved for recording, which gave them much higher fidelity (within the locked resolution) than their smaller home cousins. I.e., it was a much higher end realm of (video tape) media.

You seem very knolegable about this so just one more question, do these high end tapes get more washed out with each time they are copied? Also even with your answer I still do not quite understand what a broadcast master is, Is it a copy of the tape distributed to TV stations? Is it the immediate finished product?

I’ve encountered someone who has explained a little more of the origins of the different edits. From what I understand:

They first produced a master ‘international’ edit, which runs to about 25m30s. These featured three fades for commercial breaks; one after the opening titles, one mid-show and one just before the end titles. The titles were centred. I am told these should be considered the definitive versions.

From these, a second set of masters were produced that cut a further 2m, reducing the running time to around 23m30s, this was to allow more advertising. These are the ‘short international’ edits, and PAL->NTSC standards converted copies of these were what were originally broadcast in the US.

The ‘UK domestic’ edits were similar in length to the full ‘international’ edits, but with the commercial break fades removed - replacing these with straight cuts, sometimes wipes, sometimes shortening sequences by a few seconds in the process, and occasionally adding brief linking shots to make the transition flow better. These had the left justified credits that included a credit for the guest star.

[There also appear to be a handful of master tapes out there of ‘short UK domestic’ edits, which are the ‘UK domestic’ versions shortened (as per the ‘short international’ edit) to allow an extra couple of minutes of adverts.]

The ‘German domestic’ edits are very close to the full ‘international edits’, but with the opening and closing credits replaced by German language ones. They retain the original ‘international’ cut advert break fades for the most part, and don’t contain the changes made for the ‘UK domestic’ versions. There are a few other changes, an entire extra guest in one episode, a different Waldorf and Statler balcony scene at the end of the Harry Belafonte episode, and possibly other differences.

[There are also other ‘… domestic’ edits in French, possibly Spanish and others, but these have rarely seen the light of day since original broadcast. As with the ‘German domestic’, they are largely based on the ‘international’ cut.]

…. Then Henson acquired the rights and the master tapes. And put together a syndication package. It’s the syndication package that forms the basis of everything that has been seen since.

There is speculation that many of the master tapes had been misplaced at this point, or who knows, it may just be a case of picking up the first tape off the shelf by someone who didn’t know any better. But, the syndication package ended up consisting of approximately 15 ‘uk domestic’ edits, and 105 ‘International’ edits.

[The German market is the only exception, where the episodes are still largely from the original ‘German domestic’ edits. While a bunch of re-mastering work was done for the syndication package, none was done for the German masters, which is why the quality of the German DVDs is not so good]

However, more master tapes than that clearly did survive, as the commercial releases over the years have occasionally thrown in an episode that is not one of the edits that was part of the syndication package.

So, for example, the ‘Season set’ DVDs feature the ‘UK domestic’ cut of the Elton John episode, but the ‘Best of’ DVD sets feature the ‘international’ cut. Most DVD releases of the Charles Aznavour episode feature the ‘International’ cut, but the French DVD used the ‘short UK domestic’ cut.

Another interesting example is the Chris Langham episode, which is one where the syndication package featured the ‘UK domestic’ edit with left-justified titles and edited ad-breaks, and the full ‘international’ edit has never been seen… however the ‘German domestic’ (which should be largely the same as the ‘international cut’) preserves the original ad-break fades… and an extra reaction shot in the ‘shuffling a pack of sausages’ sketch, that would likely be what was seen on the original US broadcast.

… Then, just to complicate things further, Disney acquired the rights and master tapes.

The Disney+ versions appear to be based on the syndication package, which had been extensively cleaned up and remastered for the DVD releases, therefore presenting an eclectic mix of ‘international’ and ‘UK domestic’ edits…

However, there seems to have been a decision to attempt to standardise on the ‘international’ end-credits, as only 4 of the 118 episodes on Disney+ have the ‘UK domestic’ left-justified credits. But rather than switch to the ‘international’ version for the whole episode though, they’ve taken the syndicated ‘UK domestic’ version, and patched on just the titles from the ‘international’ cut, to create a kind of hybrid. (I’m guessing because it avoided more substantial re-mastering of those 11 episodes).

So, from the known high quality sources, approximately 17 episodes are available (or can be reconstructed) of the ‘UK domestic’ versions. 117 (I think) either exist (or can be reconstructed) of the ‘international’ versions.

There are vanishingly few off-airs of any other ‘UK domestic’ cuts beyond that 17 that I’ve been able to find. If they do exist, they’ve largely been pushed out by more recent recordings of the syndication package (likely considered preferable as they would be higher quality).

For anyone interested in more detail… (you’d have to be crazy!), I’m putting together a spreadsheet of episodes, versions, releases, and differences. At least for the stuff I know about.

I would also like the spreadsheet. also let me get this straight, the german dvds are the same source just not remastered?

Other things I need

  1. someone to create some nice blu-ray menus when I am done with everything else
  2. People who can subtitle the special in different languages
  3. someone who can create optional Wookie subtitles

Currently, I think this release will be on two Blu-ray50s, but this might change later on.

My version of the special will aim to improve on Zion, Editdroid, and Tasjos’s work. Here is a outline of its goals.

  1. replace shots tooken from star wars with 4K77 footage
  2. Include the fighting the frizzies segment and any other promos/bumpers from different TV channels

  5. Have optional Wookie subtitles
  6. Compile an audio commentary from different Interviews (only a possibility)

The main source I will use for my version of the special will be The Editdroid DVD. Then I will use 4K77 for the sections taken from A New Hope, and the official Blu-ray for the Vader widens the search scene. I will color correct the Editdroid using 4K77 as a reference up against the scenes taken from a New hope on the editdroid DVD. Then I will be using tasjo’s WHIO release for the audio dropouts and missing frames in the editdroid version. I will be sourcing the commercials from the zion hybrid and the WHIO for the opening CBS bumpers.

If you can contribute anything please do.

“Vader widens the search scene” on blu-ray is a different take

PS for youtube downloader use yt-dlp with -S vcodec:av1 added for best video quality and if your scared of the command line use yt-dlg with the same arguments and change the backend to yt-dlp

I know it is another take. I always use the free version of 4K video downloader.

Complete List of animated/partially animated Disney films
Time

So I started compiling this useful list of all animated/partially animated Disney films, I decided to post it here because this can be a valuable resource. Interestingly I can not find a complete list anywhere at all, so my goal is for this to be the ultimate go-to list. If there is anything I have missed please tell me. The default order is by release date, I could see this list especially being useful to Doctor M’s recommended Disney releases thread.

here is the link to the list

What 'a Star Wars Story' / anthology / spinoff film would you like to see?

I wanted to see George continue Luke’s story. I’m not at all interested in midichlorians. Or continuing anything from the prequels. Now we’ll never get the canon story of how Luke ended up after ROTJ.

Its like Bond just getting his license to kill and then we never get to see anymore movies.

I think it awesome that some people do love the prequels though more power to them. I wanted more swashbuckling adventure mixed with the spiritual aspects of the force and teaching the next generation of Jedi.

Maybe Lucas would have had all of these elements in his script but we will never know.

a spinoff describing the first force shamans who communicated with the Whills would be far out, like really weird. But maybe they could do history of the Jedi Bendu and the Bogan who became the Sith. and the first war between the Jedi and the Sith.

Well we will have the mandolorian season 3, and I feel like Luke will be important.

Pretty audacious undertaking! A couple of items that you may have missed…

There are three known CBS “You’re On” promos… one with Valerie Bertinelli, one with Alan Alda and one with Carol O’Conner.

Also, I didn’t see the unedited HS cartoon in your list that has the Canadian campaign “wasting electricity turns people off” line recorded backwards.

Hopefully you’re working with Skot if you plan to use his website content in your project.

Thanks, I did not know a forum member ran the website. I assumed the same Person no longer owned it due to the drastic change in interface and information. Thank you for the information on the promos, do you know how I can find the third one? I have the one with a old man and the one with the girl with curly hair. I’ll make sure to PM Skot immediately. Intirely forgot about the standalone cartoon, do you know what the best source for that is?
