Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

the HD prints that are out now are not, by any means, awesome.  the colors are all off, and it's full of changes that most everyone is unhappy with.

And if we're going to do this, i.m.o. it needs to be done right.  I'd rather find someone who has the right equipment, gather up donations, and have it done the right way with the right equipment.

SilverWook brings up an interesting point though, about AFI, BFI, and LOC.

I think that's the point, really.  It would be a wake up call to him.  Lucas used to be all about film preservation, I really don't know what's gotten into him.  It's like he's gotten drunk off of his power.

If a good quality print showed up under the table, after Lucas and 20th Century Fox both said the original was "lost" and the laserdiscs were "all the had"....they'd look like liars.  Rightfully so.  The only way they could redeem themselves is show off how amazing they are by releasing an official restored version of all three films...they'd turn into a big "look how amazing we are, this is the best restoration ever, THX, George Lucas is awesome" just like they did in 1997 (albeit with all the crap added on that time).

George Lucas is avoiding Blu-Ray like the plague right now.  I'm not exactly sure why.  Well, I am sure why.  He's avoiding it so he'll be the last one to jump on board, so everyone will have waited, and everyone has adopted the new format.  Then he'll release everything Lucasfilm on Blu-Ray.  If that's not what he's waiting for I don't know what.

Of course, if all they do is ignore it and look the other way....we'll still have a good HD print of it, and can then proceed with the other two films at some point in the future.

That's actually not as bad as I thought.

We just need to find someone who's willing to do it (the hard part) and collect generous donations (the other hard part).  Dust/scratches are the only thing I'm worried about.  It would be best to have a second print, then combine them to get the best out of both.  This would of course more than double the costs...but would also be better in the longrun.

I think once we do EpIV, people will be more willing to make donations for V & VI.

woohoo!  I found my old username (this is tearsintherain).  I chose something weird, and couldn't remember it.  When none of my usual choices didn't work I assumed it had been deleted.  Now how do I delete the new one?

Anyway....I contacted four film labs with this idea.  One responded.  He seems interested, but hasn't given a yes or a no yet.  I will update accordingly.

That being said...if the answer were yes, do we have access to a decent 35mm print?

From what I understand, they want to make a documentary that asks for the original trilogy to be released on dvd because it's what we all grew up with.

I want to make a documentary about George Lucas, "exploting," if you will, how he's taken more credit than he deserves, and how he's shaming the original actors, writers, and directors by changing the films (especially in doing so without making the originals available).

Hope that makes things a little more clear.

Line Graph For Signatures
Time
Well, yeah, it would be work...does Jay have the list of signatures in a tab-delimited text file or anything? I'm guessing Excel has some way of converting tab-delimited text to a spreadsheet. That's really the only hard part...if they can be automatically put into the spreadsheet, then all there is left is the graph, which is pretty easy to do.

Hey guys, I was talking to a couple of my co-workers today about this project...and they've re-enforced my opinion that a documentary about George Lucas would be more effective than only focusing on "we want the originals on dvd." The latter is basically just a plea, and really isn't enough for a documentary. Also, for such a simple focus, it's taking all of us a very long time to communicate with eachother and actually get the ball rolling. And on top of that it's kind of hard for me to put my foot down and say "this is what we need to do and this is how we need to do it" without sounding like a know-it-all.

So no hard feelings, but I'm going to go ahead and start working on my documentary concerning George Lucas taking too much credit.

Once you guys have a solid sequence put together for your documentary, I'll be happy to add in any kind of effects, transitions, graphics, or titles that you need. I'll come back here and check on how this project is moving along every now and then, but I'm just letting you guys know I'm probably not going to be an active voice in it. And if you want to do titles and all that on your own that won't hurt my feelings

If anyone wants to help me out, just let me know (you can read the posts between rattlehead and myself from earlier in this conversation to get a better idea of what I'm talking about).

I have an ATI All-in-Wonder 9600, and it's awesome...I bought mine for about $200, and it's well worth it.

If you don't want to spend money on something to do the transfer, try finding someone who can do it. Or as a last resort you can copy them to vhs tapes and snail mail them to me, I can reimburse you if it comes to that.

Okay, since no one else has sided with me on this one, let's do that. We'll take the more positive approach that sticks strictly to the trilogy personilzation.

So, who has footage we can use? We know what to need, but now we need to find it. There were a few behind-the-scenes things that released before the THX faces were released...does anyone have those? I remember seeing footage from the sets, and star wars fan culture, and opening day at the chinese theater, stuff like that. Does anyone have a copy of that? I think they had a vhx trilogy boxed set, and that video came with it.

Come to think of it...Star Wars *is* big over here, I don't know what I was thinking when I said that lol. They just had a big Star Wars exhibit down in Tokyo last June...Unfortunately I'm at Misawa, and the guys down at Yokota (near Tokyo) got to do a news story on it and I didn't Oh well. I should be able to find some people to interview.

And yeah, what's different about the Japanese LD's?....if they're worth the effort, I might try to find them used somewhere. I probably won't be able to, but is it worth trying?

Phantom of the Opera

Is anyone else as pissed as I am about the Phantom movie coming out in December? I wouldn't be surprised if the Phantom gets a new costume at the end of the movie made of rubber with nipples on it. I really, really hate Joel Schumacher.

And the least they could have done was spend a little more time on the trailer...all they did was take a bucket full of one-second clips and through them together, then put music on it. They didn't even bother timing it out to the music.

Awesome. We can definately use interviews. Do you know how to set up for one? (lights, sound, etc.?) What kind of equipment do you have access to?

I'm overseas, so there really isn't very much I can do as far as shooting...I'm not sure if there are a lot of Japanese Star Wars fans, and if there are, I'm not sure if they care about this issue lol. I can look into that though.

But I can definately do editing...especially any kind of titles, graphics, transitions, blends, effects, etc. that we need, I can do that can of stuff easily, and very well.

Does Jay ever go to conventions to get signatures?

Hey, please don't take anything I say personally...I don't want to argue here. I appologize if you took my post as a bash or anything like that, I didn't mean it to come off in that way.

The idea here is to make a documentary...I'm trying to say from experience that "release the originals" isn't enough material to make a decent documentary. That will also make us sound like whiney star wars geeks.

A documentary that only asks for the OT will get the attention of other Star Wars fans...but in this article Lucas directly admits that he doesn't care what the fans think. If he's not changing his mind about the OT from the number of signatures on this petition, a documentary about it won't change his mind either. If we have something that gets the attention of other directors...maybe we'll have more luck. And if we can show that Lucas has taken too much credit, that will get the attention of the other directors.

I'm going to wait and see if anyone agrees with me before I discuss this any more...if no one else agrees with me, I'll just drop the "lucas took too much credit" aspect of it, and I'll help you guys do whatever you want to do.

So everyone who wants to take part in this, or anyone who's just browsing through, what do you think? Should we A) Do a documentary that only asks for the original trilogy; or B) Do a documentary that asks that same question, but also points out that Lucas may have taken too much credit. Everybody who's reading this please tell us what you think...and read what we've both been saying before you vote

I'll be happy to help out in any way I can, whichever way we decide to do this.

By the way, This was posted recently by Jay. Let's make sure we keep that in mind while we talk about this, it's started to get just a *little* heated, and that's the last thing we want.

Line Graph For Signatures
Time
Would it be too much of a hassle to make a line graph showing the rate that signatures have grown? Key places on the timeline could be marked, such as when the dvd's were released. This would make it easy to see the publics reaction (I'm guessing the graph would take a sharp shoot upward at that point). It would also show the growth of the popularity of this issue.

Aliens DVD
Time
I was asking for a comparison between the old Aliens dvd and the Aliens dvd from the quadrilogy, but nevermind. I went ahead and bought the quadrilogy today. I watched Alien and Aliens on a big wide projector TV, they looked great. The transfer on Aliens was much, much better...the old one was painfully grainy.

On the back of the box all the movies say director's cut 2003, except for Aliens, which says 1993 (or something close to that). Is the new Aliens dvd the same as the old one, just better quality? I didn't notice anything different about it, so I'm guessing it's the latter.

The box is extremely annoying though. God help anyone who needs to get to disc 1 and doesn't have acces to a clear table to fold the box out.

I usually only venture away from R1 when it comes out more than 3 months advance...such was the case with all the Family Guy dvd's, as well as 28 Days Later and Johnny English...and a lot of the Doctor Who dvds only come out in england.
