Kubrick: Vinyl Trilogy (Released)
Time
Hey

First of all, I'm really excited to see how these projects turn out.
In regards to the multiple dvd versions.
The BEST version around says "digitally restored and remastered" under the "stanley kubrick collection" banner. The cover is a painting of one of the space stations. The old versions (both MGM and WB) have Dave's face. The yellow tone you speak of is only evident in these terrible transfers)

The comparisons (with pictures) are found here.
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare6/2001.htm

The original, non-restored, versions are considered to be some of the WORST DVD transfers of all time (in fact, they were downright insulting). However, following the release of Eyes Wide Shut, WB went back and gave them the ultimate transfer.
The difference in quality is outstanding.
Further comparisons can be found on DVD beaver.

Directing tips
Time
Basically it is an INCREDIBLY pretentious film "movement" that is based around a minamalist production.........

1)Filming must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be
found).
2)The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being filmed).
3)The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. (The film must not take place where the camera is standing; filming must
take place where the action takes place.)
4) The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).
5) Optical work and filters are forbidden.
6) The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)
7) Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now.)
8) Genre movies are not acceptable.
9) The final picture must be transferred to the Academy 35mm film, with an aspect ratio of 4:3, that is, not widescreen. (Originally, the requirement was that the film had to be
filmed on Academy 35mm film, but the rule was relaxed to allow low-budget productions.)
10)The director must not be credited.

What DVDs should I upgrade?
Time
Hey man, you have a pretty solid collection. I dont know if you are a freak about picture quality (anamorphic vs. non-anamorphic and whatnot).
But if you are, you should consider upgrading:

12 Monkeys (the new edition is anamorphic and has an INCREDIBLE full-length documentary and commentary)
The Big Lebowski (the new collectors edition has a vastly improved image quality. However, it doesnt really have any extra bonus features)
Jaws (the new 30th anniv. Edition has the original mono track and the full-length documentary from the laserdisc.....not the sub-par and heavily edited version on this release)

Also...you seem to be into Wes Anderson's films AND Criterion releases....
Please, if you ever get Rushmore, buy the Criterion edition. The image quality is AMAZING and the bonus features are great. Especially the shorts.

If you look at who made the OT...the producers, the writers, the designers, the effects pioneers...they're the ones who really made Star Wars what it is. Lucas planted that seed, but it took others to nurture it. Lucas was one part of the machine back then. Today, he is the machine, and he insists his way is the right way, even when it is obviously the wrong way. What made the OT great was creative collaboration. Lucas didn't write those scripts or develop those characters all by his lonesome. And we know damn well that he didn't direct them all by his lonesome.

With the PT, Lucas was all things. He was the dictator, so to speak, surrounded by arrogant yes-men, and we see what that resulted in. Lucas has probably only one real strength, and that is in ideas. He's a good idea man, but he DESPERATELY needs others to bring those ideas to life.

You really hit the nail on the head, I try to explain this to PT fans ALL THE TIME.
The media really has always put Lucas in the spotlight. In fact, I know quite a few PT tools who dont even know who Irvin Kershner is.

<strong>The &quot;Dr. Gonzo&quot; Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread</strong> (Released)

My preferred LD capture of choice. The commentaries, the color fidelity, the extras discs. (the set I got included 2 extra discs that had The Making of Star Wars, SPFX: The Making of Empire Strikes Back, From Star Wars to Jedi, and The Creatures of ROTJ) Hell, it's even got easter eggs. The Menus are pretty impressive, as well.

This capture is about 3 years old, too, and yet it still stands up. I find the picture to be better than the TR47 boot, mostly because of the color fidelity and the fact it's Anamorphic (I appreciate that since i have a 16x9 display) . It's a little softer in some spots, yeah, but those moments are few and far between.

Between this and the boot set I have with isolated score and original crawl on ANH, this is about all the original trilogy bootleg I need...

...until Zion's gets finished, of course

Hey Bizzle, how is the quality on "From Star Wars to Jedi"?.
The source is the original VHS, correct?
The only version I have is the mpeg (or maybe its an avi) from the OCPMOVIE supplement section of ROTJ.

This has been a nice thread and its great to hear all of your thoughts.

However, lets look at something shall we.
We all know that Lucas couldn't write his way out of a paper bag. He wrote the PT and the dialogue sounds like it was written by a second-grader. However, and please understand that I LOVE ANH, the dialogue in this entirely Lucas-sripted film is pretty bad in comparison to the brilliant characterization in Empire and to a lesser extent, Jedi. But WAIT A SECOND, A New Hope was such an incredible film and the bad dialogue never seems to get in the way......why? Could it be that the film is supported by the true substance of the elaborate sets and minatures. Absolutely.
The actors have some(physical)"thing" to act with which cancels out the lame writing.
In the PT, even though the actors have true talent, they have nothing to act with.....just a bunch of green screens.
When a majority of a film is based around the universe it creates, the universe should actually exist.

Upcoming release German covers!
Time
These covers INSULT the trilogy.
You would think that Lucasfilm, a company based ENTIRELY on digital effects, could at least do better than a crappy photoshop job.

The covers for the pre 1996 VHS releases and the original posters (Leia clutching Lukes leg for ANH, Gone with the Wind for TESB, and the Luke with windswept hair for ROTJ) evoke such a sense of magic and truly illustrate the epic nature of all three films. I like to think of them as standalone pieces of art. The new covers look like bad CVS refrigerator magnets.

Watched ROTS on HBO, UGGGH!
Time
I almost got sick to my stomach with this bottom-of-the-cereal-box slice of dialogue:

73 INT. CORUSCANT-PADME'S APARTMENT-TWILIGHT
PADME stands in the balcony brushing her hair. ANAKIN leans against the wall, watching her lovingly.
ANAKIN: . . . every second I was thinking of you. Protecting the endless, nameless Outer Rim settlements became a torture . . . the battles were easy, the longing became unbearable . . . I've never been so happy as I am at this moment.
PADME: Annie, I want to have our baby back home on Naboo. We could go to the lake country where no one would know . . . where we would be safe. I could go early-and fix up the baby's room. I know the perfect spot, right by the gardens.
ANAKIN: You are so beautiful!
PADME: It's only because I'm so in love . . .
ANAKIN: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.
PADME: So love has blinded you?
ANAKIN: Well, that's not exactly what I meant . . .
PADME: But it's probably true!

They laugh.

ANAKIN: I haven't laughed in so long . . .
PADME: Neither have I.

Me: Neither have I!

Not to be to perverse, but, did George Lucas ever get laid? He CANNOT write romance.
I mean, what the hell is this?

Another way Lucas is screwing us! (re the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
What the HELL is going on? Can Lucasfilm release ANYTHING (besides Caravan of Courage) that doesnt have some pointless promotional plug for the next product (i.e. games, etc.)? I dont know about you guys but I was PISSED when I saw the "episode iii preview" on the original trilogy dvds. I even remember that the Star Wars Trivial Pursuit had a "special Episode One preview pack" inside.

It really cheapens the films. It makes them seem like just another marketing tool rather than a truly special film experience. How much further will money drive the corrupt corporation that Star Wars has become. When will it be about the magic again.........

The Most Boring Commentator Ever
Time
As far as the "ego-value" goes, Lucas is by far the worst for commentary. But as far as sheer boredom, the commentary for "The Fly 2" is really reallly reallllly bad. The director (Chris Walas) maintains the single most uninteresting conversation with "film historian" Bob Burns for well over an hour. Imagine two old guys trying to figure out where they met for the first time, only this time you have to watch the Fly 2.

P.S.
I'm glad to finally be on the forums........
