“This particular print was struck in 1993, so unfortunately it has the censored song lyric at the beginning”

Would anyone here use a lossless rip of original pressing of the soundtrack CD with the uncensored “arabian nights” lyric? to SoX resample to 48khz and replace that portion in the title sequence?

Dunno how multi-channel separation would work with a TrueHD or DTS-HD surround track for that brief section, but since this release is just in stereo I figured its worth a shot for posterity.

I don’t remember when it was but I actually did this with the LD pcm and edited in that one censored line then muxed it with my blu-ray file. Sounds great.

Is he keeping that Luke is projecting himself in the fight? If so, it’s a little weird that the blades would touch.

I don’t really know. I’m interested to see his extended fight scene mainly because I’m fascinated to see if it can really blend well with the rest of the scene from a visual standpoint. It seems to be an exciting exercise in extreme fan editing. For example as great as it is to be able to watch Harmy’s Despecialized I find it as entertaining to watch the short youtube video showing how he married all the disparate elements together. But to your question, if he’s is keeping the idea that Luke is projecting himself, I agree it would be weird to have the blades interact. I don’t see how he could have him be there physically because where was he when everyone piled onto the Falcon? I guess we’ll see soon enough.

Maybe so. The way I look at it, there’s bound to be some things to use for my own “perfect” edit if I get an urge to do one and that’s been the case for the prequels too with me. I kind of cobbled together things from a few edits to get something I wanted save for The Force Awakens Gentle Restructure. That edit was spot on perfect IMO. The main thing I wish he was doing is keeping discrete sound but I think his release is going to be stereo. Cheers

I am interested in how these radical ideas turn out. The Luke vs Kylo fight especially.

This project is very ambitious, and I’ve been watching his videos for a while now.

One thing I never understood, though, is why he’s redoing the Kylo / Luke fight. Usually he explains his thinking but I must have missed this. Is it because TLJ didn’t have a “real” lightsaber battle?

I kind of thought that was brilliant in a way. Luke was more powerful with his cunning than with trying to be a superhero. It was the only way he could truly live up to the legend.

That’s exactly why he’s doing it. He explained in some previous video or videos that he wanted to see some lightsaber on lightsaber action 😉

Very cool. From time to time I do a search for it as 3D. Best I found was a multi-part on YouTube at low res. I hope you can get this backed as I’d love to see it again. I saw it in a theater for a friend’s BDay when it first ran.

It’s still on YouTube if anyone wants a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfzn8i4YAH0&list=PL430D1DD4233AB8DE

That youtube video is how I first became aware this was originally in 3D. If anyone wants to buy the ebay print, I can certainly let them know where to send it to be scanned so we will have even more sources available 😄 It’s gonna be a fun project.

I have sent my reels to the same scanner as well, so we should be covered for any frames missing from one print or the other.

Yes, I was told there was another print there. That’s great to know. Seems the actual restoration/preservation is going to be the challenge but it should be fun. I have the Laserdisc, DVD and VHD “copy” so I think the audio is going to be pretty well covered 😉 I’m looking forward to working on it.

Just a quick update. Thanks to a friend who found out I have a print and is a fan of Starchaser too, I have some funds to put toward having one reel done as was my hope initially. As soon as the cleaning and scanning can be scheduled we will be on the road to having some raw scans to get to work on. If you have the right software and are inclined to help with the preservation shoot me a PM.

Some time back I had contacted Shout Factory (pretty sure it was SF anyway, possibly Kino or another specialty company after researching who had the rights and stuff) and was told that there were currently no plans to release the film but of course that does not mean never and further follow up indicated a music rights issue. Now I find that difficult to believe because it is a film score not a soundtrack like Heavy Metal but the failure of MGM or a licensee such as Shout factory to release this yet is what prompted me to go ahead and buy the darn print. I am a fan of Shout Factory and their releases but if I’m being honest, I trust the resources of the members here more than any studio 😉

I have never seen this, but have heard it mentioned in relation to Star Wars so often, that I’d love to see a restoration of it, especially in 3D!
People could watch it in their VR Headsets 😃

It has so many elements that scream Star Wars (and the Excalibur myth as well for that matter). There’s a sword, a dashing space pirate, a princess and “force type ghost” at the beginning. It’s pure cheese but entertaining cheese. I LOVE animated fare like ‘Heavy Metal’, 'Fire & Ice", 'The Last Unicorn", 'Rock & Rule"… You get the idea. If you are even a little partial to those titles, take the time to watch Starchaser. But wait for the restored high definition 3D release lol
