Koyaanisqatsi - IRE Fullscreen Version (MORE IMAGE!) (Released)
Time

Many movies intended to be shown in 1.85:1 were shot "open-matte."

Basically, there are two ways to shoot in 1.85:1 with 35mm film:

1. "Closed-Matte" - You mask off the top and bottom in the camera, so there are essentially black bars on the film negative itself

2. "Open-Matte" - You mask off the top and bottom on the monitor, but not in the camera, meaning there are no black bars on the negative itself, but the top and bottom were never meant to be seen

The second method is far more common.  All three Back to the Future films were done this way, as were several Stanley Kubrick films.  When it comes time to release a fullscreen VHS, they don't have to go through an expensive pan-and-scan transfer, they just transfer the full frame of the film.

The problem with this is that the shots are composed for 1.85:1, not 1.33:1.  Because of this, oftentimes you'll have boom poles dipping into the shot which would not be seen in the widescreen version, or other mistakes (a good example is The Shining - in the fullscreen version, you can see the shadow of the filming helicopter in the opening sequence, whereas it is unseen in the widescreen version).

As such, even if a film was shot "open matte," 9 times out of 10 it was always intended to be viewed in widescreen, and the only reason it was shot 1.33:1 was because it was easier and possibly cheaper.

Last movie seen
Time

I was so mad at myself - I saw it with my dad, brother, and grandpa on Thursday night, and I fell asleep in the middle of it.  I was loving it, too - it wasn't boring or anything.  I just ... nodded off, and missed a good hour of the movie.

Loved what I saw, and I really want to see it again to get the full experience.

An Alteration to the OT that SHOULD be Done
Time

The reason for this:  Luke's saber's core was an in-camera effect achieved by a reflective sort of tape thing on the blade.  When they saw the effect in post, they decided it wasn't good enough, and added a glow around it.

Ben's and Vader's, on the other hand, were (mostly) rotoscoped from scratch, core and all, in post, like lightsabers were in the rest of the saga.

So, if anything, Luke's saber in Star Wars should be altered to match his Empire saber.

--edit--

Besides, I like the Empire sabers the best of all six movies.  So admittedly, I'm biased.

Idea & Looking for: Original, High quality, Widescreen, un-edited Star Wars on DVD.
Time

For a restoration using the 2006 non-anamorphic DVD (conversion to anamorphic/cleanup/etc.), I recommend Dark_Jedi's upcoming V3 DVDs.

For a restoration using both the 2004 SE and the 2006 DVD (better picture quality), I recommend Adywan's 1980 Empire restoration, and Harmy's upcoming 1983 Jedi restoration.

I don't recommend OCPMovie's Classic Editions.  They were made using laserdisc rips before the 2006 DVDs came out, so the footage doesn't match up with the 2004 footage very well, and he didn't do any color correction.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

The most important part of that message is this:

If you wish us to transfer copyrighted material, only one copy can be made for preservation or backup purposes and you are required by law to be (and continue to be) the owner of the original media.

That means, if they do it, and you're caught redistributing the ("one and only") copy, you (or they) could get in to trouble over it.

anothe example of lucas changing things to appeal to a new generation lightsaber dueling styles of OT vs PT
Time

That I strongly disagree with.  I imagine lightsaber training is an essential part of Jedi discipline - do you think that guy in the YouTube video canofhumdingers posted fights swordsmen regularly?  No.  It's a meditative thing.

Besides, if Jedi Knights were "guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy," I'd imagine they'd need a weapon, and they'd need to know how to use it.  Plus, I'd be shocked if there were no Jedi that went "bad" over the years - knowing how to duel against someone else with a lightsaber would be essential in the event that this happened.

On another note, I hate that the prequels made no distinction between a Jedi Knight and a Jedi Master - they were merely ranks in the prequels.  Before the prequels, I'd always assumed that Knights were the warriors with lightsabers, and the Masters never used weapons of any kind, and were the wise old ones in tune with the Force who guided the Jedi Knights without fighting themselves.  Obi-Wan was a Knight, Yoda was a Master.

Yet another missed opportunity for the prequels.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

No, TVs use YPbPr, a variation of YUV.

As long as you make sure your monitor is calibrated to 601 SMPTE bars (16=black, 235=white, as opposed to computer RGB which is 0=black, 255=white), you shouldn't have a problem when coloring video on a computer.

Of course, it helps if you're using an external, SMPTE-bar-calibrated YPbPr monitor to view your color work.

ATTENTION: Dayv needs our help
Time

IF he doesn't have cancer, I don't think that's what happened.  He wasn't asking for money in his initial "I have cancer" post.  If anything, he was looking for attention.

But everyone here, upon hearing this, banded together to help him in his time of need ... and he didn't say anything because, while he may not have cancer, he does still need the money.

Still a pretty shitty thing to do, but he didn't lie about cancer to get money.

That is, of course, assuming he was lying, which I'm not convinced he was.
