Such a great movie. Any hope they’ll ever release it on 4k?
Such a great movie. Any hope they’ll ever release it on 4k?
Really well done on the enhancements, the music and sound effects. Very effective, never really overpowering and the tone is always just right! Thanks again for your hard work Master Lawdog, it definitely adds to the wonderful narration by Stephen Fry!
Thanks a lot for your hard work, you deserve a nice rest. Cheers!
Sounds like a wonderful project!
Glad to hear it. Any news about a possible release date of any of the previous scans?
Yeah but then you wont have to convert the HDR to SDR assuming that is another hurdle may aswell wait for the SDR Blu… Atleast that is what I meant and it will have more detail still in the majority of parts but perhaps not all especially the scrubbed scenes which is the point right?
Yea i suppose so. Make the shire a bit greener, possibly restore the flashbacks, replace the scenes with the most offending DNR, who knows…could be great 😄
Wait for Blu ray next year…
I really doubt the colours on the blu will be different from the UHD disc. They seem to be stylistic choices by Peter Jackson, and there isn’t any huge backlash because, all in all, they are an improvement over the old blu’s.
We watched disc one last night and today, I decided to try playing disc two of 44rh1n’s version instead and almost immediately my mom, who has no idea about colour grading and stuff like that but is a huge fan of LOTR, commented that the colours are much nicer.
Shame, really! What a missed opportunity. Now, the next question is; how easy is it to restore colours to a HDR picture? Would the complete film have to be tone-mapped, with HDR removed, or is it possible to adjust the colour in certain spots and keep the rest intact?
I would say FOTR is an improvement over the old blu-ray and for sure the best looking of the 3 movies. I really liked the new grade apart from The Shire and the council scenes.
I read that the Shire lost some of it’s green (trees and grass look more bleak), is this true? And what’s wrong with the council?
Most people seem to be of the opinion that it is a definite upgrade from the regular blu-ray’s, despite the usage of DNR. Audio is being regarded as more ‘clear’ as well.
Best reason to upgrade is for the colours of course, although this screenshot from The Two Towers is too revisionistic in my opinion. I don’t know if this has been verified yet, but would be a shame if it truly looks like this in motion:

That should just be blue.
Many other images are stunning though, especially on Fellowship, it seems 😃
Looks like we’re getting 4k versions this December 😃

According to someone on the blu-ray forum they’re remastered from new scans of the original camera negatives, and new scans of the special effects as well. Here’s hoping they leave out the green tint this time 😄
I’d love to hear about an update as well. Seems like the colours on the new 4k are also too bright.
Thanks for the update Colson, and no need for an apology! Life’s busy, glad you have some free time in December to work on this thing. Meanwhile, there are other Bond films to enjoy, the remastered Connery ones are beautiful 😃
Does anyone have the version with the uncensored lyrics at the beginning?
PM me 😃
The scans look FABULOUS.
The first sample looked gorgeous. I’ve never seen this film, can’t wait to watch it for the first time with the proper feel of an old animation film 😃
Well, good luck to ye! Hope it’s gonna be worth it 😃
Looks great as well. So this is from a new release then?
That looks very promising! What is the source of the sound?
Good to hear! Hopefully the cleaning process is going smoothly?
Looking good! Can’t wait to see the rest 😃. It’s quite bizarre how much of a difference colour makes to the overall feel of a film, never really used to notice it.
Looks awesome, great colours!
Beautiful restoration 44rh1n! The colours look rich and vivid and are more refined than the ‘You_Too’ blanket color correction, although i still like some of the outdoor scenes from that version (Arwen riding with Frodo, the hobbits at Weathertop, maybe just because they’re a bit lighter). Having said that, your version is obviously much more preferable, with more natural colors and light, making it more of a cohesive thing. Thank you very much for your work!
Hope you’ll continue working on it, hope somebody can help you with this Netflix version. (can’t rip it properly myself either…)
All donors will have access to preliminary versions via private distribution channels, and the final project will be released on the spleen and one or two other private spots that users around here are likely to have access to. Beyond that, I can explore other options, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Thanks for clarifying, i’d like to make a donation as well 😃
Looks good! Would it be possible to share it here via a MEGA link with a password, for instance? Since we’re not all on blutopia/myspleen…
Oh Wow, sounds very good! All the best to the project 😃
