When I complain about the acting/dialogue in the prequels and someone responds by saying "well c'mon, the Star Wars saga never had great acting/dialogue", I want to rip my teeth out.

Change "rip my teeth" to "gouge my eyes", and I'll agree 110%

The [original] Star Wars [films] never had great acting or dialogue.

Off you go. Pictorial evidence if you please.

The SW Saga of 1975: ATM's Take
Time

I don't get it, was this stuff actually in the early drafts or are you just making it all up?

On that note, is there any actual synopsis of the early drafts available anywhere or do I have to find the scripts online and read them from start to finish? All I know is that some magazine from the 80s had a rundown of Lucas' original plans for the first film and they actually sounded better than what we got. That is unless the writer of the article was making it all up.  Anyway, there were more characters in it and the galaxy seemed a lot bigger than what we ended up with.

I think there has to be something left for Luke et al. to fight.... otherwise we wouldn't have the ST.

Yes, but is there any reason that it has to be close relatives? It's just history repeating itself ad infinitum. Not only does in perpetuate the annoying 'small universe' syndrome but it defeats the poetry of Luke's victory over the Darkside.

I assume it'd be for essentially the same reasons that King Arthur ends up fighting Mordred in Le Morte D'Arthur.

We've already done that only in reverse, do we simply flip the hourglass over again if we have a fourth trilogy?

What about a prequel of the prequels with Anakin fighting his twin brother in the womb, or something..?

Not only does in perpetuate the annoying 'small universe' syndrome but it defeats the poetry of Luke's victory over the Darkside.  You need a few deaths every now and then in these kinds of things to add to the drama but to have massive allegiance shifts, due to the dark side, occurring in every (effectively) generation is tedious to the extreme.  It's just an unforgivable lack of respect and imagination. Balance to the force, but if you blink you'll miss it.

That few if any of the EU books, comics or games capture the adventure and excitement and fun of the first film from 1977.

And that's the thing, on face value, you would think it would be easier.  I'm sure if the movie had have come out about eight years earlier (and was just as big of a smash hit) and had a series of books been commissioned fairly early on, we'd would have had a much more entertaining set of books.

As it is, the marvel comics were winging it, and, perhaps, Marvel wasn't the best outlet for SW by that stage. Conversely; perhaps the darker world of almost a quarter of a century on (and further) is not conducive to good Star Wars.  There's too much time to stew things over and second guess what you think would happen or what you think would make for interesting reading - Star Wars had become too big (which is a different point to the 'small universe' issue). And of course, by the late 90s, 'darkness' was all the rage.

I didn't even like the much praised Thrawn trilogy, it seems to get its reputation from simply being the first of the new EU.  It's not awful but simply not very good and has too many flaws for me to go into right now.

I've not read the books in which it occurred but all the nastiness inflicted on the Solo children is unforgivable and undermines Luke's victory in the original trilogy and goes against the spirit of the first films.  That's not to say that all has to be rosy in the universe but you would think that the conflict would take on another form.

Given the reactions to the rumors here, I wonder if there's any possible storyline that could be suggested that wouldn't get a bad reaction.

Something that moves past superweapons, Sith lords, universe shrinkage, and black hat villains with red lightsabers would do it for me ...

Same here, I don't mind superweapons, provided they are not more Death Stars, and that they are not central to the plot but I do wish they would have avoided cliches and the whole 'small universe' aesthetic. That last point seems to be exacerbated by the fact that they seem to be now channeling horror 'tropes'.  It all seems very darkly self-aware.  A far cry from the first film despite the filmmakers efforts to get back to the source material.

There should be more to the series than desert planets, Stormtroopers, TIE fighters and black clad villains with blood-coloured weapons.

No, I was all for the the new films up until a point that I can't remember. It was probably somewhere around the point where I heard the characters were all going to be in exile and learning that Kylo Renn looks like baby Darth.

Also, the whole idea of the victory of ROTJ rings quite hollow if the main characters or their offspring are going to channel the Dark One.  At best it's history repeating itself, at worst it's bastardisation.

As for whether the prequels set the precedent for suckiness... there is always the possibility of the new films sucking in a different way.
