Many versions of Tetris have a certain minor new gameplay element going. Let's call it "contact-slide." Although, graphically, a piece may connect with a piece bellow it, you can still slide it left and right along the pieces its sitting on.
In the gameboy version of Tetris a touch is a lock. You have to position the piece right before it touches every time. If I want to really play Tetris, I have to get the gameboy version out, so I can have a challenge. Any version with contact-slide I can play pretty much indefinetly.
So what am I saying? Well, what I'm saying is... that's Tetris. An extremely simple game with relatively simple code. Even there there can be grating differences in execution.
It's fine to make newer, shinier versions of whatever... but odds are you're going to lose something. Odds are even better that you're going to lose a lot -- even if you gain a lot at the same time. Not having access to the original whatever you fell in love with can be extremely annoying.
