Let's Talk Indy For A Sec

Just found these:

Harrison Ford's cameo in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. This is first time since Last Crusade Harrison Ford dawned the fedora. The opening and closing take place in Wyoming in 1950

Harrison's cameo in "More American Graffiti". He's wearing the Han Solo pants.

"The name's Falfa. Officer Bob Falfa."

The George Pal version is ok. It was good for its time. The closest film that resembles that Wells book is Steven's film. There was a direct to DVD one that is almost page by page adaptation but its horrible. Look it up. I think the title is "H.G. Well's War of the Worlds". The CGI is horrible, it looks like a old Sega CD or playstation game.

I didn't like Cruise and the script could've have better but I liked the direction. On the subject on CGI. I don't 100 % hate but there are some limitations. The guys at ILM are masters of special effects but it seems like there two types of CGI. There's the Lucas CGI which I dislike because things look cartoony and EVERYTHING including the floor is CGI. Then there's CGI where the object looks life like. CGI can be beautiful or visionary and sometimes it can look like shit. Compare A.I. to Phantom Menance, and the special effects are from the same company.

With the CGI in War of the Worlds, not everything is CGI. The scene where the people are running away from the heat ray is an art itself. I like CGI that is blended into normal real world footage and you don't even notice it.

My favorite scene is the river crossing scene where we see a glow at the top of the hilltop and then the Tripod comes over and blares its horn (which is just eerie).

This movie is kinda of a background movie. You really don't give a shit about the characters but the action is worth.

I liked that Steven made two homages to the George Pal version. At the end when the alien's hand is crawling out of the tripod is right from the 53' version. In the last scene the grandparents are played by Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, the two main characters from the 53' version Clayton Forrester and Sylvia Van Burren.

While the Pal one is a neat little B-movie, the new is scarier and more exiciting. The characters weren't that great but you can easily just skip past the talking scenes. Tim Robins was perhaps the greatest character.

Oh like: Back to the Future, An American Tail, Memoirs of a Geisha, Flags of our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Band of Brothers (tv Series), Balto, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and Young Sherlock Holmes, Poltergeist, and Men in Black.

All successes.

Edit: Anyway, getting back to Indy. Indy 4 sucked because the story was bad. Monkeys, brilliant lines like "I like Ike", "What are you? A triple agent?", "Because only the Gods live up there.", a dull artifact.

Edit Edit: On the subject of Tin-Tin, Snowy doesn't talk.

So all CG shows are cheap routes? There have been some that are pretty good CG.

We complain about Lucas because most of the stuff he's done since the mid 90's has been crap.

Edit: Like I said, two different stories. Spielberg went for total realism for Schindler's List and then later made Jurrassic Park. Lucas made a realistic American Graffitti and then Star Wars.

"We want Tintin's adventures to have the reality of a live-action film, and yet Peter and I felt that shooting them in a traditional live-action format would simply not honour the distinctive look of the characters and world that Herge created."

that sounds like someone who wants to screw Tin-Tin up.

Everything in Skull was great: Direction, art direction, set designs. The thing that sank it was the script and story.

Indiana Jones rides half on the line of realistic and unrealistic. Everyone complains of the "nuke the fridge" scene. I'm sorry, but didn't Indy jump out a plane in a raft in Temple of Doom?

Edit: Well, we're talking about two separate stories: Tin-Tin and Indiana Jones. Some things are right are Indy and some things are right for Tin-Tin.

Well, Steven says now he's willing do another one, it takes time to get back into the action genre after doing historical dramas. Steven said in a recent interview that he wants to do the next film like the older ones (the 30's adventure serial) and George wants to do new stuff (like the B movie). Steven is currently making a film about Tin-Tin, a early Indiana Jones. I'm interested in seeing that as I loved the cartoon from the 90's. So it seems Spielberg is going to put more heart into the next film. I think he did for Skull but not enough for he let George take over more of the story (the idea of Indy having a son was Lucas' idea). Hopefully for the next one (if there will be), Steven will stand up more to George and argue for a better story. But I get the feeling arguing with George is like arguing to a stubborn child.

From the Indy 4 DVD

From Steven Spielberg

"George Lucas had this idea for Indiana Jones, and it was basically, "Hey, let's do aliens".

And I said, "George I don't wanna do aliens. I've done two alien movies." And I didn't want to do any more aliens. That was it.

But George insisted, and he said "This will be like a B movie. It'll be like those 1950's B movies, "Earth vs. Flying Saucers", and all those exploitation movies that were really about government paranoia." And I resisted. I resisted. I resisted. But I also never thought I'd making Indiana Jones 4. So, I guess I kind of humored George by going along with it, thinking, "Well, I'll never wind up directing this movie though. I'll wind up producing it with George and somebody else will direct.

So then George came to me one day. I'll never forget this conservation, he said, "You know, you might be right about this alien thing. Maybe we shouldn't do aliens. There's too much of that stuff around."

I said "George, I love you. That's the best news you've ever given me."

He said, "Yeah, they're not aliens. They're kind of extra-dimensional."

I said, "What?"

He said, "Ever heard of the string theory about different dimensions?"

I said, "Yeah."

He said, "Okay, these are interdimensional beings. They're not extraterrestrials. They're interdimensional."

So, I said, "Fine. Fine. And what are they gonna look like?"

George said, "They're look like aliens. But we'll call them interdimensional."

Steven, this how we all feel about George.

I enjoyed War of the Worlds. I know there are things wrong: Tom Cruise, too much screaming, annoying son, son living at the end. But the look and effects were great. The opening scene with the tripods was great.

But because of Crystal Skull doesn't really mean we have to banish Steven from the filmmaking world.

I think they need to bring back Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi.

I can picture George leaning over Lawrence while he was writing Return of the Jedi.

"And there's these little creatures called Ewoks."

"E who?"

"Ewoks, they're cute cuddly fury things."

"Umm. How about a planet of Wookies?"

"NO! I want my Ewoks! I want the Ewoks!"

"Ok George, calm down. That's it. Put down the lamp. I'll put in the Ewoks."

"Great. The fans are going to love it."

What's wrong with Munich? That film was great.

From slashfilm.com

Lucas explains to the AP: “They wanted to go off on some other tangent. I said, ‘I’m not going to do that. I’m going to stick with this no matter what, so we either do this or we don’t. That’s it.’ Finally, we got something that we could all compromise on and all be happy with. It wasn’t quite as wacky as I wanted it to be, but it still is subtle and nice and works really well and has the same idea behind it.”

Wow, if it wasn't for Spielberg and Harrison's protest over the story, this film could have been worse.

I didn't know whether to put this in SW discussion or off-topic, but its about Lucas so I think it'll work here.

There's already talk of a 5th Indiana Jones film in the works and Spielberg and Harrison are willing to make one.

Now I love Indiana Jones. I immediately fell in love with the man in the hat when I was about 6 years old. Over the summer I was excited to see the new film and I thought it was okay. The first half of the movie was great. The warehouse chase, the American Graffitti like opening, the Nuclear bomb (yes, I like nuking the fridge), the chase through the university. I started to get a little bored when Indy and Mutt reach Peru. The whole scene where they find and skull and discuss the whole history of the skull (again) was boring. Indy already explained the skull in the coffee shop at the university, why does he have to explain more? Plus the revealing of the skull wasn't great. When they find the ark the music builds up and we have to wait until they remove the lid until we finally see it.

Another reason for my excitement about this film was Karen Allen's return. Karen is great actress who hasn't gotten a lot roles in many years. Marion Ravenwood was the best Indy girl and one of its best characters. But her and Indy didn't have a lot of interaction with each other. When they finally reach the temple (or whatever it is) its basically walking from one room to the next.

Overall I enjoyed it. Steven's direction was great (as always), the special effects (less CGI please), the stunts, the lighting, and of course Harrison (even though he has a couple corny lines).

What don't I like? George Lucas and David Koepp's writing. The Monkeys, the dragging plot. In the previous movies they spend one scene where detail the artifact. Radiers (university), Temple (village, jungle), Crusade (Donavan's Apartment, there are discussions about location of the grail but they're short and interesting). The scene where they're in the Russian camp went on too long.

So now George wants another. I'm drawn two ways. One: I want another to get Crystal Skull out of my mouth. Two: I don't want Lucas screwing up Indy like he did with SW. Lucas has said in an interview that Steven didn't really want to do another Indy film, which I can understand after doing Munich and Saving Private Ryan. But now Steven is excited about doing another film. Problem is that Steven wants to the next film the old way like the older films (you know, the good ones) and Lucas wants new stuff (like Crystal Skull). In the other films it was mostly Steven who mapped out most of the film's great action sequences. He story boarded the entire Airplane Fight in Raiders and the trap scenes from Crusade. Lucas primarly came up with the artifact and put his money in as executive producer, which he had should have done with this film. It was also Steven who came up with the idea of bringing Indy's father into the mix.

I have great respect for Steven. He's a filmmaker who still holds onto the 70's way of filmmaking. While he does use CGI, he likes to keep it down and still works on sets. Unlike lucas where EVERYTHING including the floor is CGI and green screen. I have some respect for Lucas too. After watching THX-1138, American Graffitti, and SW I felt that was Lucas was a master of storytelling and direction. And then I watched the trailer for Star Wars: Clone Wars.... need I say more? Lucas is always trying to make his films kid friendly. I watched Raiders when I was 6 and the melting head had no effect on me. I thought it was awesome. You don't see Steven putting a cute pink bow on Jaws.

So I feel that Lucas should let Steven do most of the storytelling in this film. Lucas he can play with your Yoda and Jar-Jar dolls all you want. But leave Indy alone! (I'm starting to sound like that "Let Britney alone" guy).

Anyone share the same opinion?

Darth Vader in Revenge of the Sith yelling: "NOOOOOO!"

James Earl Jones turns to George.

"What is this George? I went from cool lines like "I find your lack of faith disturbing" to this melodramatic crap."

George: "Well, you see I wanted to express the feeling of..."

James Earl Jones: Ok, ok. Get my paycheck ready.

That's right, I forgot about the GOUT discs. Well, it was last time the Original trilogy was released normally instead of being "bonus material". "How in the world could vhs ever be better than laserdisc?" I don't know, I never owned a laserdisc. I was just asking.
