Info Wanted: What is the preservation project closest to the original 1977 release?
Time
I believe it goes like this:

Big gun battle in detention block AA-23 (lots of music)
The gang jump into the garbage masher (no music)
I have a bad feeling…” (no music)
"It's worse" (no music)
Luke grabbed and released (no music)
Masher starts moving (no music)
Luke calls 3PO “Where could he be?”
We cut to R2, 3PO and the dimwitted ST’s. (music starts)
Back at the trash masher “We’re all going to be a lot thinner” (music continues)
Cuts between 3PO and the gang (more music)
Boom the masher stops thanks to R2. (the music stops on the BOOM).

It is the same on both my 70MM version and the mono version I downloaded.

I’d love to hear a different clip???

1977 70mm soundtrack recording (Released)
Time
I was making a joke.

I saw the movie 20 some odd times in the theater 77-78 and that music was never there.

In 1980 during the re-release before Empire suddenly there was “A NEW HOPE” in the titles, strange music, extra lines, and Luke cursing Wedge instead if Biggs his wingman.

We thought Lucus had changed the movie when he changed it into “A New Hope” (Little did we know what was going to happen, SE) we were confused.

In fact we were just seeing the mono version for the first time. The correct version of Star Wars is personal and most feel the first version they saw is the “right one.”

If you think the 70MM/Dolby Stereo version is the “right one” you happen to be correct.

What the hell?!?!? The musical score in the trash compactor sequence is also missing here!

It's not missing, it was never there.

It was erroneously added later...

I´m curious, what do you mean by saying, it was erroneausly added later? When? All german releases I have seen so far (except the 2004 SE) have this musical piece in it. The german dub was already made in late 1977. The question is now, which english version does have it? The mono track? BEcause all sound effects used in ALL german versions (even the 2004 SE) match the original mono mix, they also had always the missing lines (of course dubbed, but they are there).

1977 70mm soundtrack recording (Released)

Just to throw some more gas on the fire. I just finished “restoring” a mono recording of a 70’s 70MM in theater recording. Starkiller should have it posted soon but I found many problems with old tape recordings. Including tape speed, tape stretch and cassette flips.

Using some audio tools and a laser disk soundtrack as a guide I was able to get the ends of each of the 3 tape sides into sync, but even with the ends matched perfectly the middle would be as much as 3 seconds out of sync!

Getting this to sync with a picture or R & L channels will be many many hours of work.

OK, after much digging in my attic I have only been able to find one of our 70MM recordings. The good/bad news is that this is the one recorded at a Monday matinee 11 months after Star Wars opened. Soooo, it has almost no crowd noise, which was the goal when my future wife and her Father recorded it. I have to thank Mr. Mayer for this recording and helping shape the perfect wife. Sadly, he passed away over 10 years ago.

There were a couple of problems with the almost 30 year old tapes (speed etc) but I was able to fix them as well as fill in the gaps where the tape flips were. Starkiller is going to help me by posting the MP3. It’s a mono recording of the 6 channel soundtrack in a empty theater, but I find it very listenable.

I have not given up on the crowd filled recording, there is still more attic to dig through…

Are you absolutely certain you were both at 70mm presentations? According to this article, Star Wars first ran in 35mm in both San Diego and D.C. and was later upgraded to 70mm. The 70mm showings began Dec. 16, 1977 in D.C. and Feb. 10, 1978 in San Diego. So, the May of '77 recording may be 35mm. Do you remember what theaters you were at?

Ah, that is part of a great debate amongst my SD friends, one has challaged the authors facts. However the DC tape (the one I've found) is AFTER the 70mm date.

Did you use any hiss or noise reduction on your digitization?

If only that elusive 70mm mix would turn up somewhere. Surely someone out there must have bootlegged a 70mm showing of the film back in the day, even just the audio?

This is our best bet, I think. Many kids (myself included) snuck tape recorders into theaters and recorded the movies, well the audio at least. Somebody, somewhere surely did this at a 70mm presentation of Star Wars. Some friends and I did it at a 70mm showing of TESB, but that tape disappeared in the early '80s. Such tapes could be invaluable from a historical perspective, but not necessarily for preservation.

I have one of those 70mm in theater recordings, I did one in San Diego and my wife did one in D.C. (long before we were married). She has found hers and I’m still digging for mine.

Just bought a tape deck from e-bay. My old one died years ago and I never replaced it.

Anyway, once the new deck arrives what is the best way to digitize the audio?

I was lucky enought to see 2 diferent workprints of BR. They are very interesting, not as good as the theatrical releace but it's great seeing the diferent "takes" on the cut. As well as the diferent music. I would welcome workprints on DVD.
