Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition - 4K Dremastered

Hopefully this project isn’t dead, I had a great time with the theatrical editions, but surely the extended editions are needed 😢 DrDre has made a tremendous work already

Yeah… Someone else has made EE remasters, but DrDre’s depth of color is superior. I really wish he could return to this project.

Troy (2004) Director's Cut - 4K Filmized Remaster with neutral color grading (released)
Time

I’ve had a brief look through the Troy official 2160p blu-ray. It’s alright.

The detail level is roughly comparable to this upscale filmized remaster.

The colors are livelier on the new blu-ray, but also a bit more color graded, of course.

The main advantage is that you get HDR. And you get to choose between DC and Theatrical.

That’s bizarre. Why would the restoration company be making such a weird promo video (that you could probably knock together in iMovie) that isn’t even really promo-ing anything but the date of the Star Wars premiere, and features audio clips from House of Cards?

Even as a weird winking in-joke along the lines of “we know you were watching” Who uses THE VOICE OF KEVIN SPACEY as a promo for the re-release of Star Wars? There is no WAY anyone involved with this release wants that association, LOL.

Weird as hell. Don’t like it.

I agree. It’s weird. Perhaps it’s just some fan creation.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Extended Versions) - 4K Filmized Remasters with neutral color grading (released)
Time

Hmm…

I have mixed feelings about this release. I like it, but it’s not optimal.

It’s a clear upgrade over the official 4K blu-rays/streams. The detail is visibly better.

BUT - the fact that the process was started from the remastered discs does lower the ceiling of what’s possible. You still get that waxy look on the skin of the characters.

The colors are a little too blue and slightly washed out: they lack the depth that’s in DrDre’s files. It’s a shame that DrDre never finished his Extended Edition project (only half of FOTR EE was ever released) because I think they would have been better than MJBenito’s. Though, I fully understand that it would require a ton of unpaid work so I don’t blame him. And I’m not trying to throw shade on MJBenito. Again, the result is something that’s much better than the official 4Ks.

Which one do you like more? The Prequels or the Sequels? And why?
Time

The prequels! They had massive issues but they were at least original and were fun in parts. I’ve watched all of the prequel movies several times. I haven’t rewatched ep 7 or ep 8, and never watched ep 9 at all. The best part of the re-quel trilogy was the trailer for TFA, lol. They either re-trod or screwed up just about everything else.

In recent memory it’s really hard to beat “You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker. I did.” Obi-Wan had its problems, but any scene with Darth Vader and Obi-Wan was perfect. I’d kill for more of those scenes

Where can I find the scene with that line? Which ep?

It’s in the last episode of Kenobi during the final duel between Vader and Obi-Wan. Part VI, around 26 minutes into the episode.

Thank you. I’ve watched it now. Pretty good scene.

Ha! I hope you are right, altough i dont think so.

The cinema screenings of the theatrical cut for the 50th anniversary are confirmed for Feb 19 2027. Home releases are a different matter, but are unlikely to not happen.

Confirmed, this is the best way to watch it. If I remember right, they are only releasing Star Wars for the 50th, though. No ESB or ROTJ.

Right, only SW is confirmed, but I suspect that ESB and ROTJ will follow quite quickly. We won’t have to wait until 2030 and 2033.

Hi everyone,

I’m a fan of great classic movies such as the best trilogies ever made (SW, LOTR), and I’ve had preservationist tendencies and a love for high quality home theater playback for a long time. Settling for ephemeral streaming services and poor cuts/remasters is not for me. I seem to have found some like-minded people here. 😄

The film Project Hail Mary is a fantastic movie! There’s comedy, Sci Fi, heart and stunning visuals! I highly highly recommend it! One of the best movies of 2026 so far!

Ryan Gosling in space again - hopefully this movie is more impressive than First Man was. Plus, the magic of friendship! 😛

I will make sure to check it out as soon as it is playing in home theaters!

Interest in home media dwindling…? What do you mean?

Maybe not for us types, but people certainly aren’t buying blu rays at the rate they were say 10 years ago, it’s all about streaming now for the majority. If they’re gonna sell some big £200+ boxset with all the bells and whistles it would probably make sense to do it in 2027 instead of waiting until 2033, because the demand might not be as high then.

Oh, you mean physical media as separate from streaming home media. Got it.

Yes, Blu-Ray sales have fallen drastically, and you are probably right that they will fall further before 2033. Though, I would just point out that there is probably a major difference in sales/interest in any average movie that you may as well stream, and a 50th anniversary set of the most iconic trilogy ever made. The people interested in buying the latter may remain interested despite getting most of their other media through streaming.
