Lapti nek/Fancy Man preservation (original pre huttese lyrics) (Completed)
Time

So normally songs have vocals mixed to the center where they are the same volume on each channel. If you invert one channel then it would cancel out anything center mixed like vocals. You can also do something similar to isolate the center commonalities between the tracks to try to extract vocals.

So I had the idea to sync up the French LD track and the English track from the Japanese LD. They are both really just Dual Mono tracks. I thought if I could synchronize the Fancy Man music and then try to extract the center mix in a similar fashion then it might be able to remove the french/english voice over on the track and come out with a mono English Fancy Man. So I tried to do this with out much success. I am probably doing something wrong though.

Japanese LD
French LD
Center Isolation
It sounds like someone is mumbling over the track. Does anyone know if if might be possible to do something cleanly with these two tracks?

This is really cool. I like this song a lot. I really wish we could get a full english version with out comments over it.

I found a video on youtube with 3 sources of the English version. I found some things in the description interesting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd4Gwe6EYaU
"The song is heard in three venues complimentary to Return of the Jedi, however: the fictionalized documentary mini-movie “Return of the Ewok”, the behind-the-scenes special “From Star Wars to Jedi”, and in the Return of the Jedi Radio Drama. The latter uses a de-vocalized version of the track, but is also the clearest of the three and points out some slight differences in the instrumentation of “Fancy Man” and “Lapti Nek”.

There is a hard-to-find re-recording of the song done by Joe Williams and his band Urth, which is available in a modified version on the Dylnamic fancut:https://dylnamicmusicincorporated.bandcamp.com/album/max-rebo-band-and-the-band-played-on"
That link doesn’t work though. I have been unable to find it anywhere either.

I was thinking that the highest quality copy is probably from the track Star Wars to Jedi from Laser Disc audio archive. https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-Laser-Disc-Audio-Archive/id/14542

I haven’t been able to find that yet. I was thinking if I started with a high quality source like that and track to process it a bit to see if voice over removal options might be possible. I am not an expert but I am familiar with eliminating vocals from some stereo tracks by inverting the waveform of one channel to cancel the common vocals frequencies. That really all depends on how the channels are mixed though. Maybe combining a few different sources of the English it would be possible to isolate parts for removal. It probably wouldn’t work on the dual mono track used in Star Wars to Jedi.

I saw a copy of the “Lapti Nek Overture from Return Of The Jedi 12” 45 RPM" for $20. It has an instrumental B-Side. I have some nice turntables I could use to record the record. I am not really a audio expect though. Does anyone know how feasible it is to maybe be able to process something like the LD audio and remove the voice over? I wish I could just buy an album with the English version on it.

<strong>&quot; From Star Wars to Jedi The Making of a Saga&quot; - now in HD</strong> (Released)
Time

I made a similar version of From Star Wars to Jedi. I used the french ld, hbo vhs capture, and the audio from sw dot com. I mostly used the French LD for video and I used the HBO version for any french subtitled cuts. I also used 4k77, and despecialized ESB and ROTJ for the movie frames. It doesn’t do the blurred background pillarbox thing though. I also synced and added the french audio and ocred the french subtitles. I manually made english subtitles for the whole thing too. It is 720p I can upload it somewhere if anyone is interested. I know there is a 16mm film scan of this in the works eventually. I plan to donate to that effort. I will probably update this again to use that footage.

I was unable to obtain the schorman “Star Wars Laser Disc Audio Archive” with Japenese audio track or I would have included that as well. I am not on myspleen or anything.

I was comparing the 3 versions I had of SW2J and chose the LD because it seemed to have included more of the frame.
left is web, center is hbo vhs, left is french ld.

Star Wars Documentaries on Film to be scanned. Donations welcome. (a WIP)
Time

This sounds amazing! I will try to get some money together to donate.

I might have something else to contribute though. I ocr’d the forced hardcoded french subtitles from the french LD copy of From Star Wars to Jedi to a srt file. These are only useful paired with the same french audio track. The French LD copy was missing 4 seconds in the middle around ~24:00 that the English version had (maybe a cut from LD side flip?). It was only a 4.4 second music segment/desert shot so I just cut the audio segment from the English track to the French one. I don’t speak french or anything but was trying to be complete with another project.

I also have complete English subtitles I made manually. I started with a speech to text transcript and went through and manually corrected and synced the lines to the waveform.

Anyway if you are interested. I thought they might be useful.

What resolution will these be scanned for a 1.33 aspect ratio?

Mr. Plinkett's Prequel Reviews Remastered in HD? (TPM &amp; AOTC - done; ROTS - a WIP)

PrincessStarKiller: Yep I have already started on ROTS. I am not very far into it though. I was kinda working on an easier side project of trying to remaster From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of the Saga. I found the French LD had so much better detail and more of the picture on the top and bottom. I am trying to source it mostly except for the french subtitles and then use an English audio track.

The far right is the French LD. These are all the same frame of the video so you can see the extra visual information.

The whole plinkett remasters thing was really more work then I thought it would be. This is just part 3 of attack of the clones reviews avisynth script. https://pastebin.com/ybvy492E almost 748 line just for that. I am probably not the best at avisynth so maybe taking more lines then needed to do things.

I also made a silly little trailer for the Phantom Menace review based on the first teaser for the movie. It probably needed more work on the sound mixing and scene ordering/timing but using avisynth to make it probably made it more difficult.

I got the review up. PM me if you are interested in links.

MalàStrana: Most all the behinds the scenes stuff is SD DVD sourced. Some of the scenes with puppet yoda look more washed out then the blurays. Some match pretty well though. It can causes a visual difference when switching from puppet yoda frames to bluray frames. As a whole it is still is like ~80-90% hd so still mostly looks better.

Mike also does edits where the characters mouth movements line up with his voice over dialog. There are a couple of these that use puppet yoda to line up with the voice over. It would kinda ruin the joke if I used the CGI one.

ScruffyNerfHerder: Thanks!

I added subtitles for the AOTC review to youtube. I have an encode going for an AVCHD compatible mkv of the AOTC review. I still will need to do some chapter marks and sit down and give it watch before I get it uploaded.

I also was able to get an updated version of The Phantom Menace review with the higher quality sources up on youtube. I am not sure why but the 70 minute bliptv remaster cut will get flagged immediately but the individual parts do not. They also include the subtitles synced up.

Thanks I didn’t mean to make anyone sad. I probably overshared. I just wanted to explain.

I uploaded Part 1 & 2 of the Attack of the Clone review to youtube. I am still working on some things in part 3 and also need to do the subtitles. I will do another AVCHD encode of AOTC review once I am done with that.

Sorry for the lack of updates. My cat ended up getting lung cancer and was pretty sick for a while before he passed. I just kinda got depressed working on this because he was my buddy who would hang with me while editing. I am trying to jump back into this because I am pretty much done editing the AOTC review with a few missing scenes to track down. Anyway just letting anyone interested to know this project isn’t dead and I hope to get the second review up soonish.

would be awesome if RLM would provide the original footage shot for this review (e.g. Jack, Gillian, Jay & Rich describing various characters) if it still exists.

I have tried contacting them a few ways without any luck though. I think they are just too busy on making new content.

BlueCopy, I can’t imagine how much work this was (The subtitles alone!) but it’s amazing! Thanks a million for that ulozto upload of the larger file. I was honestly skeptical how much of a difference redoing this in HD would make, but I’m happy to be so wrong!

Yea the subtitles were more work then I realized when taking it on. I think they make it more widely enjoyable for everyone though. It also makes them more easily translatable if anybody ever wanted to do anything like that. Thanks for the praise on the remaster!

I have been a little busier lately so working slower on the AOTC review. I will have more free time to spend working on it more soon though.

Cool thanks I will add Jumper (2008) to the list. The animated one I remembered is from The Incredibles (2004).

The clip at 24:14 where he says “Wanna shut that mouthy b** up” I am not sure of.

I think some of them are from Lakeview Terrace (2008). I might have to do a samuel l jackson marathon of movies I haven’t seen.

I am having trouble identifying some of the clips of Samuel L. Jackson movies in AOTC part 2.
starting at 24:00
https://youtu.be/nq3Wlk2w-Zw?t=1438
and another clip is at
https://youtu.be/nq3Wlk2w-Zw?t=1534

I know the clips from these movies. I am not sure which movies the others come from.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)
A Time to Kill (1996)
The Negotiator (1998)
Shaft (2000)
Rules of Engagement (2000)
Black Snake Moan (2006)
Snakes on a Plane (2006)

Does anyone know the other movies used there?

If anyone wants links to a mkv of the phantom menace review then drop me a pm. It is about ~8GB and 2-pass encoded compliant for an AVCHD DVD9 and Bluray. I made 18 chapters marks. 16 are at the numbered title cards and 2 other logical points. I also made subtitles mainly from a transcript posted to reddit. I generated them with youtubes script to subtitle feature. I went through every subtitle, added missing ones, separated into logical segments and manually synced each one with SubEdit. I really like the tech ANH when just watching alone but I used the bluray footage here because I felt it fit together better that way. I can do Tech ANH encode with bluray or de-specalized ESB & ROTJ if anyone is interested in it though.

Many Thanks to you all for showing interest and helping me out with this project. DragoonClawNZ, darthrush, Bobson Dugnutt, PrincessStarKiller, Collipso, theMaestro, Handman, ElectricTriangle, Possessed, ChainsawAsh, NeverarGreat, guiser

You can also go over to ulozto.net and search “Mr.Plinkett’s.The.Phantom.Menace.Review.1080p.V1.0-BlueCopy” then you should see 16 part rars if you want to download.

Here is a vimeo link to a version with technicolor and despecialized used for episode 4-6 clips.
https://vimeo.com/263054369
this one is 720p and i had to starve the bitrate to keep it below the 500mb weekly limit. I probably should have just done 480p for vimeo because it probably would have looked better.

I thought maybe youtube took it down because the original file was higher birate then usual. I tried a lower bitrate version but got blocked too. They seem to be targeting a specific 10 second clip where the bongo surfaces on naboo for some reason. It doesn’t really make sense to me because that same clip is used in earlier videos.

I think everything is pretty much final in this version unless someone finds a problem I didn’t notice. Also the technicolor vs bluray movie clips I am still not really sure how I much I like it. I can always do a couple encodes if people like it one way or the other.

I will get back to work on the Episode 2 review later. I would like to make some nice synchronized subtitles for TPM review sometime as well. Anyway heading out to see Ready Player One.

I tried to upload a new copy based on the blip tv version unlisted but got dinged by disney and was blocked worldwide within minutes. So it looks like I might not be able to show my progress with videos anymore. I thought since the original reviews were on youtube I would be ok but I guess not.

I used the Technicolor ANH, and despecialized ESB and ROTJ. I commented out my old bluray cuts so I can easily revert back. I am thinking I might change back to bluray because I just don’t like the change in colors between clips. The review is more about criticizing story and character but not really the color grading of the films. It just flows better for me personally when there is consistency of colors for the official releases.

Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cagzS-BWnjA it should be more up to date. The “Examples of Basic Protagonists” should be correctly white in that.

I have found also that you can do seemless branching with BDEdit if you know what you are doing. There isn’t any good documentation for it though. I was wanting to make a few seemless playlists and encode the final in segments. I was thinking a new specialized effects, original effects, and then a version I saw on youtube that actually cuts out the serial killer/hooker plot for those who might not like it.

Yep I have corrected the ewan mcgreggor photo as well. I originally couldn’t find a good resolution copy of the photo so used a different one. That might not be in the version I posted though.

I appreciate the criticism but if you want to wait a couple days then I should have a new complete copy to check out with more corrections.

I was using the wrong font on the early single part versions. I switched to a font I found called Han Solo. It didn’t match some characters like the number “4” for some reason. I was not sure what to do about it though because I couldn’t seem to find one that matched exactly.

I also I had to use an uppercase Y rather then the lowercase Y to match the shape from the original. I am not sure why that is exactly.

Since Harmy’s using my project for V3 of Despecialized, doing the Tech version for ANH and Despecialized for the sequels would be a bit of future-proofing.

Thanks that is probably the best plan. I will do that.

I switched over to the French LaserDisc of “From Star Wars to Jedi” because it looks better then the hbo capture. Luckily only the movie scenes are subtitled and the Lucas interview is all dubbed.

I am trying out applying a noise filter to only the low light scenes in “The Beginning: Making Star Wars Episode I”. I think it was shot on a late 90’s DV camera whose ccd didn’t handle low light very well. The noisiness kept bothering me.

I am using a script called mClean. It isn’t perfect but I will keep playing with the parameters and see if it can do better.

I might just re-cut all the non-special edition parts from harmy’s editions to just give it a consistent feeling for the Original Trilogy clips. There aren’t that many clips from the OT so it shouldn’t take that long.

I was trying to match the fonts used in the original video so far. I am going back and replacing when Arial subtitles were used and using AlternateGotNo3D used for OT star wars subtitles. It makes them feel more integrated to me. Arial is just kinda ugly as a subtitle font to me.

I also have been going through and doing little retouches like adding a transparency to glass parts of the gin bottle overlay so it looks like a more realistic bottle. I know this wasn’t done in the original but I think it looks better.

Sources I am currently using in the TPM review.

  1. Star Wars Blurays for Episode 1-6 Footage.
  2. Schorman’s version of Episode 1 for changed scenes from DVD (Mainly Puppet Yoda)
  3. Episode 1 DVD Menu Intro
  4. Episode 1 DVD Extras
    A. The Beginning
    B. Web Documentary Part 1 - All I Need is an Idea
    C. Web Documentary Part 6 - Prime of the Jedi
  5. OT DVD Documentary “Empire of Dreams”
  6. Episode 2 DVD Extras
    A. Action Featurette
    B. From Puppets To Pixels - Digital Characters In Episode II
    C. State Of The Art - The Pre-Visualization Of Episode II
  7. From Star Wars to Jedi - The Making of a Saga (HBO to DVD capture)
  8. Bluray Movies for Protagonist Examples Segment
    A. Spider-Man
    B. Spider-Man 2
    C. The Matrix
    D. Gremlins
    E. Back to the Future
    F. Die Hard
    G. The Terminator
    H. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
    I. The Rocketeer
    J. Starship Troopers
    K. Tremors
    L. Rocky

I will upload another test encode to youtube sometime when I finish re-editing the OT parts.

The Episode 2 Pre-viz documentary is actually annoying to edit from because it is a variable frame rate mpeg-2. They mix 29.976 interlaced footage with 23.976 with a 3:2 pulldown.

I really like Neverar’s Technicolor Recreation. I had to trim one frame on the beginning of it and then all my cuts were correct. It can kinda looks strange when jumping between clips of technicolor A New Hope to bluray Empire and Jedi. The colors are noticeably different and it almost looks distracting to me. Maybe I am looking to close at it. I am not sure if I should go for consistency between the sources or 1 for 3 on a better looking source for the original trilogy.
