MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)
Time

Finally got to see these over the weekend thanks to Rikter.

Magnoliafan's edits are really quite amazing- he managed to clip out just about very wince-inducing moment, shape some of the neutral bits to better support the action, and removed some of the wishywashy dramatic copouts (like Dooku being 'just another sith').

"Ballance" was a much more dramatic change- there was far more weak material here to resculpt- but "Clone War" also showed some major improvements.

All told, the things I like about Lucas- his ability to do really amazing visual storytelling- was enhanced, while his real flaws (his tin ear for dialog, and love of cheeze-mo cleche) was reduced to non-offensive levels. I would have been a bit more brutal cutting out some of Portman's cheezier lines, and would have made Jar-Jar's cursing more "starwarsy", but generally I have no real complaints.

Simply put, I like Magnoliafan's edits BETTER than the theatrical or DVD cuts of the films.

I have some real hope for "Revenge" though- the preqs seems to be improving even without Magnoliafan's hand... perhaps the third one might not even need an edit....er...nah.

You know what would be some funny stuff though? Take dialog from other movies (like Pulp Fiction and Train Spotting, for example) and cut it into the movies with the right actors...

I've had my head in a hole or something, but I had never seen this before.

Damn funny.

Or that Sandpeople suck worse than Stormtroopers?

He was being sarcastic.

As was I. A thick armor of sarcasm is sometimes all that stand between us and the cruel cruel world.

Did Boba Survive?
Time

He really went down like a chump... if he were to die, I would have liked to see something better. Jango get pwn3d (diving for the saber? WTF was that supposed to be? Remember your flame thrower? You shoulda used it!), but Boba just went down like a big ole sissy-pants. Hell, Moe Larry and Curly could have taken him out the same way.

I could buy him surviving the pit for a time- he was fully encased in armor which presumably had some life support functions... and had a crapload of weapons and stuff with which to blast or burn his way out...

I've never been a member of the Cult of Boba, but I did think he was cool.

Ah well- Boba still lives deep inide every one of us. When out boss craps on us, he is the part of us that considers using disintigration.

OK, a quick one- according to Lucas’s current version of SW ‘cannon’, does Fett survive getting so ignominiously tossed into the monster pit in RotJ?

In some of the EU stuff, he lives… but most EU stuff is like stepping in dog crap in flip-flops and feeling the fresh warm feces ooze up and squelch between your toes. Unpleasant.

So- what does Beardo himself have to say on it?

Help me settle an argument: does Luke use the ‘force choke’?
Time
I think the big confusion comes from everyone being so damned literal about Yoda's "only for defense, never attack" stipulation about how a JEDI would use the force... people think "no way! Luke is a good Jedi! Jedi don't use the force to attack! So he couldn't have done it!" Blah blah blah.

The Force is neutral most of the time... you run into trouble when you use it to force your will on others, dominate, and control them. Ever use of the 'mind trick' is persuasive or defensive. Even "go home and rethink your life" doesn't force the guy to change, just to think about it.

Same with tossing crap around or choking people- if you do it with proper Jedi cool, and in service to the Jedi's Defensive philosophy, then you're golden. If you do it out of anger, then you flirt with the Dark Side. Luke was 'making an entrance' in order to save someone, and he needed to impress on his "host" he wasn't to be trifled with- he needed to be in a position of strength the Hutt could understand. A quick choke to make his point (and remove an obstacle), and no "dark side point" earned. I think the lightning thing may be different- you have to really tap the dark side for that don't you? But the choke is the same order of power you would use to toss a brick- neutral except in how it is used.

When entering Jabba’s palace, and those pig dudes try and stop him (the Gamorreans), does he use Vadar’s signature force choke attack to render them unconscious, or does he do something else there- like just shove them back or use the mind trick to put them to sleep?

I say he choked the green bastards, my friend says not.

I’m sure I’m right, I just want everyone else to say it too.

It is a reach... and not one I'm even sure was intended by the edit.

I do like the Original better, but the edit doesn't bother me as much as some of the others.

Greedo is a chump either way- either an goon who talks too much, and lets Han get the drop on him, or a looser Jaba sends to his death just to make a point.

I really like Jaba- he seems like a pretty easy going guy for a huge slimy mafia slug, someone you could really work with. His reaction to the thermal detonator negotiation tactics reflects this. Jaba respects balls and chutzpa. Han wouldn't be any good to him is he were a fawning sycophant or any less hair-trigger and deadly. But Jaba also can't let al dumped cargo go. He likes Han- Han is a good guy, and gets the job done- but business is business.

Greedo is just a chump either way... trying to build him up now as a seasoned bounty hunter... who just happned to miss at 2 feet... just stupid.

MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)
Time

This is my first post to these forums.

I have spent the last hour (at Work no less!) searching for these "phantom edits" and such, and it seems Magnoliafan's are the best and most highly regarded out there, and are generally thought to be superior edits to the theatrical “official” releases… so now I’m left with only one question: How do I get copies of these crafty reworkings???

I’m sorry if this is covered elsewhere- my password just dropped into my box, and I couldn’t wait to find out.

Thanks

Greedo
Time

My take on the O-NH Greedo was that Han got the chance to demonstrate he was a pretty serious motherfucker, and that smuggling was a pretty rough biz- Greedo and Han knew each other "from around", yet Han still blows Greedo's guts out, then calmly walks out of the cantina, tosses down some cash for the damages, and walks out.

Works for me- Han is a pretty nasty dude, very much in the mold of The Man With No Name.

Now, the Greedo Shoots First Heresy.

I can almost buy it... I don't like it as much- it really pulls Han's teeth as a character who undergoes a change- but sure. In this version Greedo is a schlub, a second-stringer, a wannabe that Jaba sends in to get Han's attention. "Why did you fry poor Greedo?" makes greeny-snout seem like a real candyass. He just doesn't play in Han's league now, and gets wasted for his trouble. Jaba is waiting outside to have a word with Han... and you have got to like his style. So long as he sees his money, he doesn't really give a crap is the scum he surrounds himself with ice each other. He's a jolly old murderous slug, with a sense of irony and odd humor. "Let that pesky little Greedo go and talk to Han. Perhaps he'll make his bones and become a real player... or perhaps Han will fry him and he'll quit bitching about never getting any good jobs. Either way, I get my point across."

Now... the tail-stomp... Jaba should have had Fet shoot Han's testicles off for this indignity.
