Ideas & Info: 'a fistful of dollars' and 'for a few dollars more' special editions - and other rants about foreign releases...

There is not much info over at Amazon.co.uk

THX-1138

The U.K. version has special features.
Neither include the original Italian audio, so a conversion of some kind could be justified for the sake of adding the original audio if a decent quality source could be found.

How do you recommend I go about ripping the AC3 from it then? I have DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, SmartRipper, DVDAuthorGUI, VirtualDubMod, & Nero, but I don't really know of a way to go about ripping it using any of those programs...do you have one in mind?

I think that due to copy protection, you would have to rip it with DVD Decrypter and then use VirtualDubMod to Demux the audio, which can be done from the stream list. There is probably an easier way to do it that I'm not aware of.

So what exactly is it you have? It's not the DVD, just like a avi, mpeg, etc kind of copy? If you do that, either send it by www.yousendit.com to hoichitheearless at gmail.com or just try and send it to me by gmail directly..

Yeah, it's an avi. I'll try and send the section to your G-Mail account when I get the chance then.

Oh and i'll check to see if the trailer is unrated or not.

Sounds good.

It would probably be better to work with a lossless source, that way there will be less quality loss in the long run.
Is there any chance you could send me the straight AC3 track from the region-1? Theres something that I would like to check, but I don't currently have a copy of the disc on hand.

I have the american reigon-1, so perhaps if I could get that one from you I could theoretically start work splicing & dicing this thing...
Anyone recommend any good tools for such a process? (Btw, how big of a file is your unknown version of it?)

Sure, I'll dig it out sometime in the next few days. I'll probably just make a direct stream copy of the pertinent section and send that to you. There shouldn't be any further quality loss, and hopefully we'll find someone with a full DVD anyway.

Yeah I don't know if this kind of shot (or the others really) are possible to recover unless someone has some pretty good insider knowledge, but it's a good thought anyways.

I'm not really sure if they are possible to recover either, but I thought it best to at least see what people had available. Is the unrated theatrical trailer on the Region-1? I know that there is a theatrical trailer on there, but I don't know if it's the unrated one.

Okay, so I finally got a copy of the unaltered soundtrack on CD to use for the soundtrack in the censored section of the film....i'll upload it in a few days time.

However,

Is there anyone out there who also wants to help with this project & has access to any other reigon release of this film other than reigon-1?

If possible lossless audio would be preferable for the track.
I have a uncensored version of the film in Divx/Xvid (not sure of the exact codec). If there isn't anyone who has the DVD, frames from my files could at least be used as place holders until a DVD is acquired.

On another note, I've read that the Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing section is edited on all DVDs:
In the lengthy shot where Nicole Kidman dances naked in front of a mirror to Chris Isaak's "Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing," the second half of the shot, once Tom Cruise walks over, has been zoomed considerably for the DVD. The first half is as it was shown in theaters, with rear nudity from Kidman, but seconds before Cruise enters the frame, the image starts to zoom up and in rapidly, so that when Cruise enters, only a section from his elbow up is visible. In the theatrical version and the original unrated trailer, when Cruise enters, the frame goes well below his navel. - from the IMDb
Does anyone have the unrated trailer; or even better, some manner of bootleg of the theatrical version (which would be useful for syncing up the altered music as well) which could be used to recover this footage?

It would also be nice to restore the “We made love” line (does anyone know if Kubrick was responsible for this change?):
In the DVD/Video version, when Nicole Kidman gives her monologue about yearning for the Naval Officer, she mouths the words "We made love." But the words "You and I made love," are heard. This was done to clear up the confusion about whom she actually made love to. - from the IMDb

Also, if anyone does have a theatrical bootleg, the shower stall thing would make an interesting DVD extra, (or possibly it should be put back into the film; does anyone know if Kubrick wanted this change?):
The original theatrical version included a goof in an early scene (a boom operator was reflected on a steel shower stall post in Victor Ziegler's bathroom): this has been digitally removed on the home video releases. - from the IMDb

Here are the first four pages or so worth on ebay, though you would probably be better off taking MoveAlong up on the offer to borrow them.
They never indicate that they are the 4:3 P&S versions, but they all look like they are.

The widescreen Faces set comes in a differently shaped box set. I had thought I remembered them being a different colour as well, but apparently not.

No you haven't. You just used the wrong application.
Maybe DVD Decrypter can't do it right, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.
I do it all the time in a UNIX environment using the dd command.

Regardless, I can see it making reseeding difficult for those who don't know what they are doing.
As long as the image files are no bigger then around 4478 megabytes I don't really care, as I can burn them as a data-disc, I'm just saying that I can see some people having problems.

The only problem I see with distributing images as ISOs and rars is that it makes reseeding impossible for anyone who burns the images in DVD-Video format, as the original file is lost (with rared stuff people are also less likely to seed as they have to extract to watch or burn, as most people don't like the idea of having an extra 4 gigabytes taken up for no good reason). Personally, I usually just burn the image files on a data disc, rather then as DVD-Video, as I prefer watching video on my computer monster anyway, so I can reseed most things, but my ratio is already too high as is, so I tend not to reseed things unless no one else can.

I wouldn't call it a lost cause, a decent number of major label albums are still released in LP format, and essentially everything released by the good minor labels comes out on vinyl. Audiophiles will continue to buy vinyl until a digital format that is easily usable and sounds as good (or more realistically, better) comes along, and even after such a format comes into existence, there will still be people like me who enjoy the overall package that vinyl provides as much as they enjoy it's superior audio quality.
On a related subject, at some point I intend to make a higher then CD quality soundtrack for the Star Wars movies using the pre-digital VHS sets, as I've always felt that the heavily used horn section suffers as a result of the CD quality level soundtrack (44100 hz 16 bit recordings are notoriously terrible when it comes to wind instrument reproduction). I also want to attempt to create an isolated score using the LPs, though I know that the LPs are missing bits of the score, so I'll have to figure out exactly what's missing and see if it can be filled in using the VHS tapes.

It's DVD-Rom content on Rikter's KCCI Holiday Special disc --

Its too bad no one has put together a musical compilation torrent or anything...

Although it hasn't been torrented, Rikter has put together one heck of a musical compilation.
That disc has 1.1G of OGG and MP3 music in its DVD-Rom content,
in addition to the best Holiday Special available (well, equal to RowMan's I guess)

dasklaun from Myspleen is offering the KCCI version for upload on the Myspleen message board, and the DVD-rom content is apparently included.

Info: A new edit (The Lost Cut - it was a prank; but some good info in here)
Time
A lot of the footage that ended up in the Smithee cut was presumebly going to be part of the original verion that Lynch wanted to make, as he was supposidly shooting for somewhere above the 180 min mark length-wise, but the studio made him edit it down to what became the theatrical release. No way to tell really, as the Smithee cut is about that length anyway, and length is about the only way we could have told as a Smithee rough cut could include any footage a Lynch rough cut could. As a stretch off the top of my head means of possibly determining it's origin, do you remember if a male voice or a female voice did the opening narration (assuming that there was an opening narration at all that is)?

I wouldn't be surprised if this has been found...I worked at a well-known production company's Vault in Los Angeles and my boss and I discovered extremely rough edits of Dune (David Lynch) and Blade Runner (Ridley Scott) on 3/4" tapes. These were found in the bottom of a box in a back storage room while we were "tidying up." My boss (ass kisser that he was), confiscated them after we viewed them - but the point is that they accidentally fell into our unsuspecting hands..and they sat in that dusty back storage room for years without anyone knowing of their whereabouts. They could have quite possibly been the only copies of those edits in existence.
SO to hear that this lost edit (the Holy Grail) might have been uncovered is not much of a shock to me - it is not too uncommon of a tale, especially given what happens in both Editing Facilities and Production Comapny Vaults!

I was really hoping you still had those rough cuts too, too bad your boss took them.
Out of curiosity, what kinds of things were different? Was the Dune rough cut longer then the theatrical release version (and thus closer to the length David Lynch originally wanted)? Was the Blade Runner cut sans narration? Did it include unicorn related scenes?

I think it was extra DVD-rom content on one of the discs posted over at Myspleen, I'm guessing the Magnoliafan Phantom Edit 1.2 if anything, as I couldn't find it with any of the others, and I couldn't check that one, as it's a rar originally (thus no way to check the file contents) and I'm not sure where I put the extra DVD-rom content for that disc. If I'm wrong and it wasn't I do have mp3s somewhere though.

Non-DVD transfers?
Time
I've been considering taking a PAL source and changing it's frame rate to 24fps, then using the uncompressed PCM audio from an NTSC set as a soundtrack (or possibly audio from a higher quality source, see below).
The video would look closer to the way it was originally intended as PAL doesn't mess up the video nearly as much as NTSC does (once it's been slowed down anyway, I can't stand PAL speedup personally).
It is likely that a higher resolution soundtrack could be created for the entire film using the VHS tapes that were mastered from analog sources, as VHS has good sound reproduction (better then CD quality PCM at least) if the tape and the player are in good condition.
I've also consider using the LP records to create a higher quality 96,000 Hz, 24 bit isolated score, as I've always felt that the Star Wars score suffered quite a bit in CD standard 44,100 Hz, 16 bit as a result of the heavy use of the brass section in the score (the quality of the reproduction of brass sounds on CDs compared to that of LPs is often considered a prime example of why LP is the superior medium). A 96,000 Hz, 24 bit isolated score made from a decent condition LP would sound much better. I'm not certain that the entire score is included on the LPs, but if anything isn't included it could likely be pulled from an analog master sourced VHS.
