KENOBI: A STAR WARS STORY [The Radical "Help Me Obi-Wan Kenobi" Cut]
Time

^^^ Right on. Admittedly, this guy’s version presents and feels more like a “director’s extended cut” of a movie - and that’s what I appreciate about it. Pretty much my only (or biggest) personal requirement of a fan-edit is that it doesn’t transform the material into something that it never was -or- was never meant to be. At the end of the day, the source material IS canon (for better or for worse) and I prefer to consume my media as canonically as possible (-even if some of it subjectively sucks).

I agree completely with Docking Bay here. I approached the last jedi the same way with Poppasketti’s edit, that way I can actually consider them canon without have much if any dispute with those that have just seen the theater version. I kinda view the TikTok version as an almost jumping off place for others to make edits from yanno. I’m even considering using it to make my own edit with his as a base but including all the best ideas from all those far more talented then myself.

Also Damn! scottkin That reddit editing is amazing thats exactly what I’m talking about! I feel like Grievous over here adding things to my collection! LOL

I will just keep lurking in the shadows lol! Keep up the good work and don’t get burned out! I’m certain you already know, but it’d be better to keep a pace then get burned and stop before its perfect. I know how you feel however, I’m the same way about my art 😉. I will be here for V2 whenever that is being processed. Well done and mad props for keeping up with a community of perspectives.

As for the scoring: I am loving most everything up until the 10min mark, I feel bad being negative but minus a few choices for scoring Vader (when he slows her lightsaber) and the ani obi dual (which feels great) im not really feeling it, it kinda feels like two many scoring smushed into just a few minutes. The music is very hopeful when I feel like it should be somber and intense (obi giving his lightsaber). When Tala dies you have a rendition of Yoda’s theme which doesn’t really sit right with me. I think a tragic theme would work after she gets shot but before and directly after it should be quite (classic quite dread for audiences before something goes wrong). I think Vader should have an imperial march rendition while he walking, maybe a different one that is more menacing rather than…i guess military. Also for the small motif before obi gets on the ship, I think you can just play the VERY beginning, and it might fit better, the audience will recognize it, and you will get a beat before the next score (easier for blending and readying the audience for the next step).

I hope that makes sense. You are doing a great job so far! Keep up the great work.

I personally appreciate the mind games involved in the ep (maybe a little toned down). I think a tasteful way of doing this is to have the first part of the dual scene earlier in the movie (dream, memory, whatever) and then in this finale use it as a memory (like in the original) and as a call forward for the audience, pulling them into the fact that they now also know why obi would know what vader would do.

I think we still need the mind games, master and apprentice parallel in the final scene to drive home what is said in ANH, and I feel like the way they did it was cool if not a tad ham-fisted. So if we treat it almost like a reveal (show in the beginning, audience forgets about it until the end when we show the whole scene, so everyone gets payoff) we can rectify the problem with the original…it feeling thrown in with no previous build up.

Creating our own mini Setup and payoff.
Needless to say I think this would work really well.

P.S. great scoring! well done loving it so far, it might be a tiny little bit too loud though, just a tad bit over powering of other elements.

  • Reeva attempting to kill Vader will be the thing to interrupt him from grabbing the second ship, so there are no inconsistencies to his actions to leave Vader looking silly or with a drained stamina bar.

That is a great idea! the perfect fix. kinda stunned that I didnt think of that lol. Im really afraid that the end will be sequel bait, and im even more afraid that Reva will be getting her own show…

I give ep5 a 6/10…For me and I haven’t seen anyone touch on this but for me it was literally hard to watch…THE SHAKY CAM! MY GOD…It almost makes me cry how frustrating this show makes me with how much better it could look and feel. EVERY SINGLE INTENSE HAS THE CAMERA MAN ON A TRAMPOLINE. I don’t think there can be anything done about that except if someone puts in a tiny bit of stabilization in the hallway scene, kinda a long shot, I dunno.

  • As for the deepfake situation. ABSOLUTELY wait for Shamook (the guy hired for Luke in Boba Fett) to release a deepfake of the scene, I’m certain he will do something with it. We might be able to get a hold of him and ask for the resources to implement ourselves. We have seen him around on the site before and he has helped us. Also might be a long shot but worth a try. I used his resources for Luke in Mando S1 to edit the deepfake into the full ep before, and I’m pretty sure I can do it again.

  • I think a little bit of color grading would help cement the flash back scene into the feel of the prequels. To me the shots looked a bit too much like a studio. maybe if it was changed to golden hour or dawn that might i dunno bring out the Coruscant-iness

  • On top of everything else everyone will be talking about regarding editing, I think the shots of the ships however we edit them should be slowed down a tiny bit. they moved wayyy to quickly to look right. they looked like they were made of paper.

Better episode, still disappointed overall…ON THE BRIGHT SIDE I have come to terms with the fact this show is PERFECT for a fan edit and I know we will be able to raise the quality to what it can be.

I appreciate the rescoring so far but there are two things that stand out.

  • The burst of “Duel of The Fates” when she fires does not fit.

  • When Obi’s leaving “The Force” theme’s integration feels a little thrown in, maybe if its a bit extended with the shot of him walking towards the ship or at least given time to breath a bit before the next score, that might work. Another possibility might be to use another source of the force theme.

An alternate source can be found here that integrates a previous rendition of Obi’s theme from ANH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qStbSfFK9b0&ab_channel=EverythingStarWars

As for editing

  • I think in Acbagel’s cut the single shot piercing the storm trooper and igniting the barrels flows better and gives the action a lot more surprise/justification (not to mention bad ass skill) for Vader’s hesitancy. I agree that “the putting the fire out/reusing shots” feels a bit like a stretch, but with a bit more trimming there can almost be equal parts surprise and actual decision to let him go on Vader’s part.

  • In the shot of Obi arriving on the city planet there are sith whispers for some reason. I’m not sure why or what the reasoning is for them.

I AM LOVING the score of Obi burning to the score of Ani burning, I got a bit emotional just watching that small segment. I can only imagine how much better it will flow with the whole thing.

P.S. Ever since I started watching this show I wanted to hear a very particular theme for Obi-wan that has always without fail given me chills. The small motif at the beginning of The Force theme has been used in the Originals of course but also in Rebels to signify Obi-wan.

Maybe take a look and see if you feel it fits in at some points, I certainly feel like it would evoke the feeling of Obi wan on Tatooine beginning his journey into Alec Guinness.

Anjohan I really like that current edit of Vader in the village! And all your points are certainly fair. I greatly appreciate your interest in working with so many view points!

As for my feeling on the ep… Tbh I feel like if you cut any more of this ep (which I feel like it needs it here and there for pacing and dialog) it will be too short an excursion to even include in any meaningful manner…It is soooo easy to cut this ep out entirely as well. I dont know, like the rest of this show so far it had pretty cool moments (Jedi tomb, swimming into base and glass/water break) but they were few and far between with every other moment being average (not bad) and really dumb (Leia under the coat, slapping a storm trooper & sending him against a wall smh).

I’m no expert here but, I feel like this might just be useful for spare parts in future eps.

All in all, thoroughly disappointed so far (I had very high expectations for this show).

But isn’t Anakin’s actions horrifying enough, and the sadness in the music just a representation of Obi-Wan’s feelings in that moment? I always feel like Obi-Wan is heartbroken watching this, more heartbroken than scared.

How this scene is shot and Obi-Wans facial expressions as well as his hastiness doesn´t fit sadness. It´s fear, in my opinion. That maybe subject to personal interpretation though.
How do other people think of this?

I would agree personally. I feel like it should be more slow menacing and horrifying. That being said if you do want to pursue the sadness angle it is possible but I think it will have to be far more subtle.

WOW! There is A LOT to talk about lol. So glad to see HAL and Poppasketti here!!! I literally yelled with joy when I saw the two best editors around make an appearance 😉.

From my limited experience I think most of our perceived problems with the show stem from how characters are speaking/acting and subsequently affecting each scene. Although some small plot shifting will likely be necessary, I find that a “less is more” approach is always the best way to go when starting off. I am always very wary when a project starts changing/cutting large elements of the original story (even if we don’t necessarily like them). On the flip side take for instance Poppasketti’s edit of TLJ (Rekindled). Regardless of whether or not we would have liked a better product we don’t really have the resources (most of the time, looking at u Shamook) to make a completely different product feel as convincing as a billion dollar company’s. All of that to say, I humbly think we should focus on making the product as good as it can be, rather than changing it. Sorry if that was obvious to some, I just felt it should be said.

Below are a few points and my humble opinions on them.

  • DARTH APPEARENCES

I agree with the idea to cut the scene between Reva and Darth while he’s on his throne. Serves little if any purpose for the story…DUH the inquisitors want to be promoted we get that from any of the previous scenes, Reva’s especially.

I like the idea of Darth sensing Obi wan because his necessity to save Leia! phenomenal idea there. With a bit more polishing and contribution from other editors this among many other edits might flow perfectly. I just wonder if it would flow better than an edited/improved end scene from the original.

  • MUSIC CHANGES

With ALL the respect Anjohan, it seems you have your heart set on the introduction of Vader to be a heart wrenchingly sad scene. If you are going to pursue this direction, I would (humbly) recommend cutting off the “Anakin’s Dark Deeds” after Vader stops, and leaving things as is, if not (like others have said) mute the music to be pulled into the moment with obi wan further.

I appreciate the “burning Ani” theme (lol) while Obi is burning very poetic, the sudden burst of music when the shot is fired is a bit too jarring though and it might be best to leave that be.

  • CONTINUITEY/EDITING

I am fully on board with keeping the two timelines during the fight more succinct. However in the current clip Obi travels from cutting the smoke pipe to being immediately grabbed by Darth in an unknown location. You’ll need at least an establishing shot so we know where they are after returning from Reva.

To be clear I think we should stay away from investing much time into edits that may be rendered useless later as we are only 3 ep in (i.e. Padme references, completely editing out ep 3 etc).

  • LESS IS MORE

I think most of us can agree that Disney’s dialog/writing is treating everyone like children. As for the “LESS IS MORE” like I mentioned before, this is mostly regarding scenes with unnecessary dialog/camera shots. many of the lines by the Inquisitors can be cut as well as like you have already done cutting the useless 4th scene of obi cutting meat. Its a bit ridiculous that we have to rectify the editing in this show so as to not slap the audience with the most obvious dialog, but here we are.

All this to say, I think we should at least focus on making these characters feel like they belong in Star wars and not a fan film, before we start changing the way this story is told. Because its very possible to realize down the road, that after editing the dialog/camera shots, those scenes don’t really need to be cut. And if this is going to be for an audience outside of us fan edit aficionados preventing people from being pulled out of the movie/show with unnecessary cuts/edits is in my opinion our # 1 priority.

Anyway, sorry for the essay, I just want to see this show get what it deserves…in the good way. In the future I’ll focus more on adding specific ideas, lol.

Deepfake Tarkin & Leia swap (Rogue One) (up on the Shamook youtube channel)
Time

I DID IT! For anyone who wants it I finally edited Shamook’s deepfaked Luke into the original Mando episode format! I got the resources from ForceGhostRecon and I was just planning on doing a simple, cut in old splice in the new, but this turned into 5 hours of editing.

  • I recolored/adjusted the gamma of each shot with Luke in it since FGR recolored his “Movie” version of Mando, and I wanted the shots to mesh seamlessly with the OG shots.

  • Brought back the original length of every shot (FGR had cut a few frames off of some shots, probably by accident) while slightly shortening the one shot of him looking down before picking Grogu up.

  • And lastly I recut a shot of Luke looking down at Grogu that didnt use the deepfake (most likely cause FGR couldnt find the resource). SO NOW every close up shot of Luke (minus him bending down) is deepfaked! TA DA!

I’m going to be uploading it to a google drive, so if any yall want it, private message me!

The scene was such a lovely one to work on.

Also, I didnt realise this thread was still active, so I would be happy to make a rudimentary edit putting the deepfake into the end of the Mando episode tomorrow.

(I’m not sure if the quality will match as the forceghostrecon source is lower than the highest quality setting for the YouTube video, but it’s still 1080p so it should be terrible).

WHO KNOWS, NOW THAT SHAMOOK IS AT LUCUSFILM MAYBE HE CAN MAKE A NEW ONE! XD

So just finally watched the forceghostrecon luke scene and its pretty straight forward the deepfake luke in 1080p. I dont know if it changes anything for anyone but I can clip it out and post it somewhere if thats whats stopping someone from just putting it in the episode format. Let me know if thats what anyone wants.

WOW I ACTUALLY CLAPPED AT MY SCREEN WHEN I SAW YOU ON THIS THREAD SHAMOOK! Welcome! as its been said before you have some fans here, myself included! There is incredible work to be done with your skill!

I am most excited to get a full release of (at least) the Luke deepfake in Mando! But hopefully maybe even a tweaked deepfake to allow some of the age (stubble around his mouth) and mouth movement back to the shots. There are some seriously talented VFX artists floating around this forum. Regardless I will still take your OG deepfake in the final Mando episode over the original (no hate just, more palatable to wider audiences).

WELCOME AGAIN! Great to have you here.

I’ll be very interested whenever someone integrates the Luke deepfake into mando! I will say just from the clip peasent provided, there are a few ideas to further edit/improve the look (although its very impressive already):

I think some subtle color correction on the face could go a long way.

Maybe something could be done opacity-wise to bring some of the stubble in the original back to luke’s jawline to bring some age.

After everything a slight layer of sharpening might help with the deepfakes “softening problem”.

The resting position of his lips are also uncanny when he speaks but I doubt anything can be done with that.

In fact maybe there could be an attempt to merge the original and deepfake like Tarkin, by overlaying them together (keeping the lower part of his face the same and using the deepfake on the nose up). Most people just have a problem with his eyes which the DF fixes but it cant do the lip sync like the original.

Just some thoughts lemme know what you guys think im obviously not a VFX artist.

Revenge of the Sith (The New Canon Cut) [ON HOLD INDEFINITELY]
Time

This Brain child has gotten me truly interested in the subtle possibility of a seamless/more seamless transition for characters and tone to The Clone wars. I am greatly impressed by the creativity, and although I would be really interested to see what the older more experienced editor you have become would do now with that creativity, I understand lack of time and energy as well as anybody else. But that is the beauty I have found with this site and it’s community, where one person is unable another picks up where they left off until we have all collaborated on something we can all be proud of!

Needless to say I would love to get a link to the full version and maybe in the future (unlikely but still) and maybe use your ideas as a partial base to edit from (if you are willing of course).

Thank you for the new perspective, and let me know if you would be alright with me or others using your work for other projects!

~Sincerely, a prequel appreciator.

CONGRATULATIONS HAL! I feel so humbled to have my name on that list. I will be downloading it and NOMATTER WHAT I believe this is the version I will show anyone and everyone I know for years to come.

It brings a smile to my face knowing I can now barge in on conversations with a simple trump card phrase “BUUUT you haven’t seen the right version of ROS 😉”.

May the force be with you all!
