STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Shure no problem, but I'm only doing this for fun. I also just want to let Ady, WXM and the others that physically worked on this to know that I still applaud the brilliant work thay they have done on this. This version by far, has easily exceeded my expectations. I have seen it 3 times allready and like others here, I pic out something new every new time I see it. Cant wait till the DVD-9 comes out.

Just curious, what parts of the movie do you folks like the best. I know alot of you will say everything, but what part in "particular" stood out to be the most impressive. I'm torn between the sabre fight and the space battle at the moment.

My problem is just getting that initial rendering of the DS surface set-up. I don't even have LW versions of the tiles!

Hey WXM, good to see your taking this in a very positive manner! Always challenge your self and strive to be better!

The easiest way I think to go about this would be to "normal map" a section of the Death Star surface in Light wave, render it out and dupe in AE. Normal mapping achieves the all the detail you need without having to worry about rendering tons of unwanted poly's . Very fast rendering. Does lightwave feature Normal Mapping? I'm a Maya user so normal mapping is a pretty regular feature I use when modeling.

BTW, I just started work on a TIE attack shot, would love to show you the final when I'm finnished if your ok with it?

@ Mojo_LA: Don't worry about it dude, If you have something to say then say it. Ady is not going to hate you for it. I feel pretty much the same way about the TIE shot. If Ady decides to change it then great, if not then I wont feel any different, I hope you would do the same. Don't look a gift hourse to close in the mouth.

Now thats just plain wrong, don't take the criticism that hard man. I have done alot of stuff that has gotten the same type criticism on other websites ( non starwars related ). I knew right away when following this project that you would get criticism; however, I didn't expect it to be effects related. With what content you have shown us during your progress, it looked to be a virtually error free reedit, and for the most part it is, and beyond. Mainly what you have are just a few FX shots that are getting some heat. Nobody is going to think less of you for keeping them as they are, and it wont effect me either way if you choose not to change them.

I'm really happy to see that virtually everybody ( including me ) really enjoy what you have done story wise, ( bens hubble, end battle ect.. ) George Lucas should take some serious notes from your release. And about ESB, that should be a cake walk for you. You would manily be taking out some of the SE shots and changes that didn't need to be in it in the first place, it's nothing near the shape A New Hope was in. I say forge ahead, and finnish the classic trilogy, it is your destiny......

Hey WXM, it's great you hear about your contribution to this edit. CG work is hard to perfect, and I think you did a very good job for your first try. You did the best with what you were given, and not knowing what was before and after the shot would have been very difficult for any person in your place. So in that respect, I applaud your effort.

THAT TIE SHOT

Ok Ady, I took a closer look at the "Big TIE shot" and I can better express what I feel could be improved.

You are right, the TIE model looks fine and the lighting works. The tonal balance is good too and it looks like you match the grain pretty well.

The main issue is the animation itself; to start, the TIEs are moving very slowly; the energy and pace we've seen in the rest of the battle has not been matched. I would go as far as to say the action should be sped up by 200%.

Another thing is the camera motion is VERY CG looking - it starts off COMPLETELY locked off - watch the stars, they are absolutely rock-solid still until the pan begins. This makes the shot very dead for the first half, and to help sell how fast the TIES are moving, having a little camera motion at the start would help liven things up. Even just giving the camera a little bank (starting at maybe 10 degrees and ending at -10) is a very easy way to keep the frame moving. That alone will make a huge difference.

The TIES should also have a sense of formation; it's not important to make it strict, but just a grouping of two or three here and there will make it look more organized.

I have one tech note for the render, but it will go a long way towards matching the original FX footgae - BLUR LENGTH. The TIES are are bluring WAY too much, and I'm guessing Lightwave's blur is set at the default of 100%. Cut it in half, at least. Step-frame through some of the original battle footage, especially shots of X-wings moving fast - the edges of the ship blur much less than your TIEs are. But again, that can be fixed simply by re-rendering the elemets with a 50% (or maybe even 35%) blur.

And as has already been said, the Death Star background looks like mush.

Please understand, I am not being hard on you - I am treating this project with the same care and high standard that I have kept with any other project I've work on. I've designed space battles for Babylon 5, Voyager and now Galactica and I am asking you to have faith that the things I have mentioned WILL have a positive effect on the shot!

If you want to send me the scene file and even a low-res version of the TIE model, I'll be happy to whip up a couple of animatics for you.

I highly doubt Ady changes that scene. Too many people are happy with it. Reguarding the motion blurr, we don't know what the CG artist had it set at. For 24 frames a sec, the shutter should be set at 180 degrees with a 1/48 of a second shutter delay. My only complaint is that the Ties are moving a bit too slow. I may just wip up a small shot myself. I have a really good Tie mesh I can experient with in my Maya.

ron2112, seventiesfilmnut, I dissagree ( no offence ). It's not something I would demand Ady fix as much as the constant whiners over the flipper are doing. Al the shot really needs is just a little more speed IMO. A pretty easy fix for ADY. To do more ADY would have to re build the shot from the ground up.

I agree with ADY, this whole filpper debate is way out of hand. To fix that problem, someone is going to have to model a flipper, texture it, light it to match the film elements, and composite it into the shot. No amount of photoshoping cam make it blend in seemlessly IMO. I am still perfectly happy with how ADY did it originally.

Ok, finally had the chance to ceck out the fruits of Ady's hard labor, brilliant work, simply brilliant! I really didn't have a problem with anything. The only thng I think could still use just a little work (and this is just my opinion ) is the attack of the ties. It just plays out a bit too slow and a little too static. The shot wants to play off like the start of the ROTJ space battle ( fast with dynamic flight paths ). Ady, would you consider reworking that sequence further. I have 5 years with Maya and can wip up a test shot if your ok with it.

Also, I have to agree with some of the others, the death star at the end of that sequence does not look very good IMO.

I have 19 pieces so far. Hope to have the whole thing in a hour or so.

Sorry Sevb32, there is no one guide for all news readers. They do work the same in principle, but they all have different work flows. Heh, the one I use didn't come with any help files or instructions , but it was pretty easy to figure out.

I asked ADY that a while back but not exactly reffering to DVD-5 vs. the DVD-9. All he said was that he was using mpeg2 compression. Mabe he using dvd shrink for the DVD-5.

I keep forgetting the UBB code is different for this forum, sorry for the double post.

Granted, it is a trivial change execution-wise, but there is very little justification for changing the original remark. In fact, there is MORE reason not to change it. The original wording is entirely consistent with Obi-wan's mindset and agenda at that juncture of the story.

I would like to argue that, "Your father wanted..." is contextually correct, logically correct, historically correct and requires no change.

I guess that depends on a certain point of view. For me, "I wanted your father to have this when you were old enough" makes more sence because Anikan makes no mention of wanting to do so in episode 3. Also, Anakin/Vader is lead to believe that his son died with Padme. It seems like lucas forgot that detail when he made episode 3.
