Laserdisc revived - pics added - Japan Definitive Collection & Special Collection (WIP)
Time

Hello all

Sorry for the long absence, i was a little burned out for a while.
I also had a huge car project that took up all my time, the car has now been sold and im back into computing and this project.

Im gathering all the pieces to put it back together, i still have all the hardware and the Japanese Definitive (CAV) edition. (Thankfully)

Need to blow some dust off the C2ex and Runco (Nec IPS 4000) processor. A condensed version for those new to my project: The C2ex outputs pure NTSC via BNC to the Runco which then processes the y/c signals in Adaptive 3D and outputs s-vhs. The Sony has been modified to not power the Hi-vision circuits to further reduce fine noise. For the Image I started replacing caps with Panasonic Fc and Fm, the image got a big better. But the biggest difference (in fine image detail) came when i replaced all the caps surrounding the Panasonic Ntsc decoder with Black Gate Pk. Got a lower noise floor also after replacing the puny rf signal cable with a 75 ohm shielded coax that is probably 10x bigger.

The goal of the project is to capture the S-vhs coming from the Runco with as little loss of detail as possible.

Okay.  I know my S-Video doesn't do near the picture that the component does but the component could still use some help.

:)

I will keep an eye out for one....it might help me make a better capture.

Component ? only Dvl 919 and Elite Dvl 91 has component output and that is purely for Dvd video not laserdisc. :-) Yes you will need a video processor with s-video output. You can try and get an old Faroudja Ntsc decoder with y/c outputs wich is bnc so you will need to make a new cable or get an adapter.

Faroudja VP-250 Video Line Doubler...............would this be a good solution for my DVL-90?

Thanks in advance.....

:)

After looking at the manual, it is a definitive no if your thinking of using it for capture purposes. My video proc has a monitor (s-vhs) output, this does not. (that means i can get the processed signals in y/c) If you have a CRT projector it can touch up the image somewhat, but all in all this is a basic line doubler with a comb filter + basic bandwidth expansion hardware.

ABC... that's a great poster, not seen it before. Though does look like a movie in which Boba Fett leads an army of biker scouts against the dastardly Nazis and their russian counterparts... in the Temple of Doom!

Lol, i just have to say that is so true. Fun for collection but wont cover my LD set, maybe if i were to die..

Aleks im very interesred in your LD player , is everything crammed into the old laserdisc shell or is everything in seperates now ? . Can i see some pics of everything ?. Good luck with this, i think its an amazing thing your doing to this ld player . How do you know so much about laserdisc , did you work with them before ?

I got some more parts on the way so pictures will come. To answer a little of your question; After disassembling many players (mostly Panasonic and Denon before i got the Sony Japan players, C2ex and Mdp 999) and reading tech on Laserdisc i know abit more now.

Im trying to focus on one thing at a time. For a few days now i have been looking at capture cards, Ati was interesting because of their 12bit Adc's (analog to digital converters) But real performance is what counts.

Ati was never full into video capturing gear, Pinnacle however has for a long time. I have found a PCTV Rave (on the way here) with the Fusion 878 chipset, it is based on the reference design but better pcb parts (accurate crystal, more capacitors etc). Also its been seen time and time again, the source has alot to do with the end result. Here are some images from the PCTV 878 (The first is from cable (tuner), the second is Dvd input as composite.. not mine. The 3rd is post processed outdoor antenna, the 4th is an ATi card with the same chip (!):

One of the board members has offered to lend me his PDI Deluxe european version (Sweetspot) to see if we can spot any differences. Because truth be told when i spent so much time and money on the gear i dont want to get second rate results when the analog video is turned digital.

Im pleased to say that the Runco is going to be the most modified 3D comb filter Video processors ever :) Reclocked 3D y/c board, its own 3.3v supply etc etc, i will post pictures when its done. Then its on to make the last mods on the player before capturing.

a sample of Toot filter in action can be found here: http://img469.imageshack.us/i/tootsampleannotated3bg.jpg/

This could be implemented if the US version, the Jap version and the Gout could be lined up. Too bad it will be much harder to get the old version (Pre DC) together because of a problem with the Jsc master where Us discs got a shrinking aspect ratio at the end of the movies.

However i will try to do several runs of capturing the Japan made Jsc (to average out any lost detail) before starting the post processing on the DC Since some have asked for the raw capture of that to work on it.

What mod's are left for the LD player ?

Not alot, i thought about reclocking the Tbc chip but now it seems it wont be cost effective buying 100 high accuracy crystals and using 1 when the tbc in the player does not decode the signal just Tbc. I got 5 on the way from the states to clock the most important; The master 3D y/c adaptive comb filter in the Runco. So im grabbing a capture card and a few more black gates for the Runco and im ready to show grabs.

James Cameron uses DVNR on Aliens Blu Ray transfer.
Time

Aliens was grainy in the dark scenes but i think that is part of the movie, at least he is not inserting Cgi aliens and singing teletubbies. But the link to the original prints will be servered after the new work on the master.

I's really one of my favorite movies, i guess i will transfer some of it after my Star wars projects are done. I got a massive Japan LD box with obi and a big leaflet that describes the entire movie production (in Japanese tho)

I have always hated the smashing glass sounds so i hardly ever watch the factory pressed gout, that and the very stupid motion blur and DVNR.

Hopefully the Japan special collection (mastered in the 80's) will look good on my gear; No DvNR and blur. The colorbalance is not too good but i have the perfect thing for that, an Elite Video Bvp-4+ that processes the signals in the analog domain without A/D and D/A.

Aleksbmw will you still be releasing a blu ray and DL dvd format of this ?. Could you  give me some info on the 97 you mentioned above ???

Yes ofcourse, i dont talk about the 97 much because the first round of captures and work will focus on the Dc Japan set and a look on the Jsc (Japan only special collection; Cav Widescreen set from the 80's).

Im not going to talk about the 97' untill im/we are almost finished with the Gout.

Too bad its not possible to mod it for Pal, the Tbc chip supports it but nothing in this player has been designed for Pal even remotely in mind. Remember it was engineered and made in Japan. The eprom for the syscon chip would need to be rewritten, then design a new Pal decoder chip and thats way beyond me tbh :)

Hehe :) very much real, and yes it will be interesting to see how Jsc turns out. I can say this tho, i watched the Japan Definitive version then watched the Dvd Gout and wondered where the small stars went. So much more interesting to mod and tweak analog mediums, with Dvd its more like "what you see is what you get". With the Black gate capacitors in, the image has become very sharp.

By the way nice signature, didnt know. And no i dont think Cameron is going back into Alien to CGi fix the "man in the suit" shots for the quadrilogy.

And yes im here talking because my parts has not arrived yet :)
