Fixing Deleted Scenes for an Edit
Time

I am trying to fix some deleted scenes from Star Trek Nemesis in order to make a fan edit.
The first scene is inside a 480i clip, and has been telecined from 23.97 to 29.97i. It has interlacing problems, bad edge enhancement and green screens that I intend to replace with my own video/images/VFX.

I have tried different programs and Doctor M recommend me to use AVISynth to apply some filters, starting with:

directshowsource(“Star Trek Nemesis_t27.mkv”)
TFM(pp=2) #Matches fields to created 29.97 progressive with duplicate frames
tdecimate() #Removes duplicate frames to restore 23.976 fps.
crop(8,90,-8,-98) #Crop the broders on 4 sides.
Spline36Resize(1920,874) #Resizing as directed by Aspect Ratio Calculator http://www.haku.co.uk/ARCT.html
Addborders(0,102,0,104) #Pad out with black borders.

Deinterlacing plugins seem to work, and it works well reverting to 23.97. but when cropping and resizing it looks really bad. That’s why I tried at first to use an AI upscaler to improve the quality, or at least maintain it when resizing to the official blu ray material configuration.

The source Blu ray has this specifications:
Video
Codec: MPEG-4 AVC (23.90 Mbps)
Resolution: 1080p
Aspect ratio: 2.35:1
Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1

So, given this information, I would like to know how to proceed. If I’m correct, I should apply all the filters and cropping before trying the AI. But I don’t know exactly which improvements can be made on it and how to apply them. I also don’t know in which step I should try the green screens treatment.

This is the scene itself (first part is an interview that I won’t include in the edit).
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jU7V4DGi8OYjLcFL5mDAEks8W71HygoS/view?usp=sharing

I would really appreciate if someone can help me with this as I’ve been since 2015 working on this edit.
Cheers

Help Wanted: for my 'Star Trek Nemesis' fan edit - help with deleted scenes...
Time

I´m working on a fan edit of Star Trek: Nemesis. Is well known that the deleted scenes were cut mostly to give the film a more commericial appeal and more action, but they could have made that movie much better. My edit cuts most of the redundant and worst scenes while trying to recover the missing scenes, at least the best ones that could fit properly in the movie.

The problem is that the quality of the avaliable sources for the deleted scenes is really bad. I have seem here that there is people who have done an excellent work in the deleted scenes of Star Wars movies and i would like to know if do you think there is some way of doing something aceptable with the Star Trek Nemesis ones.

I would really like to restore that scenes, but i don´t know if it´s possible. That one has strange interlacing and it also is ocuppying just a centered part of the screen, so even in 480p (source resolution) it is not in full screen.

SONY VEGAS AUDIO DOUBTS
Time

DigMod said:

Ac3 tracks aren’t compatible with Vegas. You’d need to convert it to an aac, mp3, pcm, or wav file. The PCM option is probably what you’re looking for if you want lossless. I believe the stereo downmix refers to what you are hearing while editing if you edit your 5.1 mix in stereo. Your render will output a 5.1 surround track if you select that in the settings.

Hello.
I have not been able to do that. Star Wars I Blu Ray uses a DTS-ES 6.1 English audio track that can be converted to WAV but as i had already done changes in the project timeline, cutting parts and altering audio, i can´t replace just the audio. In adition i was using an AC3 5.1 downmix of the 6.1 DTS-ES that was importing good to Vegas with apparently correct channel distribution but suddenly it is importing only Channels 1/2 in the 6 previous audio tracks in the timeline.

In addition, i don´t see how you can export loseless 6.1 in Vegas. When starting a Project it doesn´t allow yo to choose anything besides Stereo and 5.1. And when rendering, i couldn´t find it as well. I went to customize render options, 7 channels but it says it doesn´t fit with the project properties.

So… Is there any way to import a loseless 6.1 track to Vegas that can also be rendered after editing?
Is there a way to replace the audio only from the videofile? I tried to mux mp4 with the loseless WAV and it said mp4 doesn´t support it. Then tried changing mp4 to m2ts and it worked but the file can´t be imported to Vegas. So i can´t do nothing…

Steelbooks
Time

Hello¡
I really like special editions of movies and specially Steelbooks. I would like to make some designs but i don´t know how i can get the steelbook itself. Is there any company or anyone who makes customized steelbooks and sell them?
Is there a way to make your own steelbooks?

Info Wanted: The DIFFERENT STAR WARS versions - which is best?

I have also noticed that the epic force ghosts scene in ROTJ looks different in every version.
Check this screenshots:

From 4K83 DrReel Color Correction (4K83 1.6)

From Harmy Despecialized v2.5 (newest version), clearly looks more “blue”. Why?
https://imgur.com/sLur4VQ

From 97 Special Edition :Again there is a color change? Now looking more “grey”.
https://imgur.com/NypkA7m

Which of this is the more similar to the way it was shown in ´83 cinema?

Most likely Despecialized 2.5 is the most accurate out of these three, followed by 4K83 1.6, or somewhere in between. For the original effects shots (as well as a chunk in the middle of the film that was out of focus on the Blu-ray) in DeEd 2.5, Harmy used a scan of a Low-fade 35mm print. These prints are very blue, and Harmy corrected the LPP shots to match the Blu-ray footage. 4K83 1.4 uses my own color correction which I based directly on an LPP scan made by TN1. I made the image warmer and wanted to diminish the blue push, but blue objects on screen still have a stronger blue tone, similar to that Despecialized shot. Though I don’t think it’s quite as saturated. It probably would have looked like that when projected back in the day.

I am still very confused. Because some people is saying Harmy is not much accurate to the authentic color because BR that is their main source is really far from te original colors but other people is saying BR is more accurate than 4K because it uses OCN as source. So… should be distinguish between being accurate to the way it was shown in theaters in 1983 and how the OCN looked?
Why do you think it would have that blue saturation when projected in theaters? I mean, if that blue saturation on Harmy comes from a Low-fade 35mm print and 4K83 comes from theatrical release prints, shouldn´t be 4K83 the most accurate to when it was released in 1983 theaters?

SONY VEGAS AUDIO DOUBTS
Time

Hello¡
Not much time ago i asked here because i had problems when importing dts or ac3 extracted from blu ray movies to Vegas. Someone recommend me to covert the audio tracks to suitable formats for Vegas like Wav and import audi and video separately. I had tried and it works but i have some important questions:
1 - The Wav track is loseless? I mean the channel distribution and levels are the same as in the DTS/Ac3 track? Is there any quality loss?
2 - Before i began with converting to wav sometimes i managed to import the original Ac3 track (always had to downconvert when we talk about DTS-HD-MA or Dolby True HD tracks), but it showed in Vegas as 5.1 Surround (stereo downmix). What is that? Does it means Vegas is changing levels and everything to stereo while appearing as 6 tracks in timeline?

Info Wanted: The Prequel Trilogy - awful DNR - are there better versions available?
Time

Hii friends
I remember when i went to the cinemas back in 99,02 and 05 to watch SW Prequel Trilogy and i don´t remember the awful DNR that has been applied to this movies in BR and UHD releases. I would like to know if there is some edit or version in HD quality but keeping the film´s grain strucure and at least reducing some of the artificial look. I own all SW movies in BR but in the end i don´t ever watch them in that official format except the sequels.
For OT i watch Harmy, except ROTJ that i watch an 83-97 edit that uses 4K83.
So for PT i would like to own a BR quality version that is free of that (for me) horrible treatment.

Info Wanted: The DIFFERENT STAR WARS versions - which is best?
Time

I have seen that there is a good ammount of versions of the original unaltered trilogy, and i am a bit confused about which is the best option to watch them.
If i understood well, 4Kxx are the more accurate to the original, but i also read that Blu Ray source (that was used in Despecialized) are from the original camera negative… So what is the difference between that source and the one used for 4kxx?

I have also noticed that the epic force ghosts scene in ROTJ looks different in every version.

Hello & Help: a 'The Phantom Menace' edit - on eliminating some lines from the pgs/Blu-Ray subtitles
Time

I am doing a Star Wars: The Phantom Menace edit and i need to delete some lines from the english subtitles due to scene-edit. There will be a full english version without any subtitles and one with the spanish subtitles integrated to video.
So i would need to eliminate some lines directly from the pgs/Blu-Ray subtitles that were put to the video with ffmepg.

Until now i didn´t manage to make it. DOes someone know how i can make it?

ROTJ DE Victory Celebration Edit (a Work In Progress)
Time

So, to put some order in the process so far.

1- yotsuya: Uses 4K83 until movie switches from Luke’s face to the distance shot of him standing in front of the pyre that then pans up. From there uses his own 97 SE until it pans back down to Endor again. Then he puts in the BR until Luke sees the Force Ghosts appear. Then back to 4K83, but cut to match the 97 SE and BR (as in that versions that scene is splitted).

VIDEO SOURCES USED:
-97 SE (own copy)
-BR
-4K83
Both SE and BR added some grain to fit with 4K83.

AUDIO SOURCES:
-4K83
-Laserdisc AC3

2-SparkySywer: Uses Harmy DE v2.5 except Planets Celebration scene where SE 97 Trillary Dump’s Restoration is used and BR for just the added shots.

VIDEO SOURCES USED:
-SE 97 Trillary Dump’s Restoration
-BR
-Harmy Despecialized Edition v2.5

AUDIO SOURCES:
-Harmy Despecialized Edition v2.5
-SE 97 Trillary Dump’s Restoration

Possible future edit:
-It would basically be like the two above but using Disney 4k instead of the BR and that new 97 Restoration you mentioned.

Is it all correct?

ROTJ DE Victory Celebration Edit (a Work In Progress)
Time

WoW this is fantastic! 4K83 looks really good in 720p and the ending is perfectly edited.

I think SparkySywer was doing it in a different way. Besides using Harmy instead of 4K83 (i personally prefer 4K83) , if i am correct he is using 97 only for the Tatooine-Coruscant transition, using BR for the general Bespin, Tatooine and Corusant scene and First Endor shot ( so It has the edited Jedi Temple and Senate) and I dont know how he managed to change from the 97 transition to BR Coruscant without being noticeable but that is also good.

I personally really like how that test video looks, but maybe is possible to put BR since Luke in front of the pyre, then Bespin BR then Tatooine BR , then 97 Tatooine-Coruscant transition and Coruscant , then BR first Endor scene ( that i also see very blurry specially in the sky in your 97 version, i suppose that is inherent to all 97 versions avaliable due to SD). Then continuing exactly as in your edit.

What do you think?

I dont know if that is possible. Personally, i think how you did It is really good but ofc it would look more HD if is possible to replace Tatoooine, Bespin and the first Endor shot.

yotsuya said:

Yeah, I do all my editing with just stereo audio and then edit the 5.1 mix separately to fit the video and stereo. If you have a clean splice at one or two given points it is pretty easy. From what you describe you want the 1983 version up until that scene and then the 97 version for a bit, and then go back to the 1983 end credits. visually the end credits can be changed after the title card portion when it switches to the crawl. Sound wise that is a harder edit. For the 97 SE the repeated a section of the end credit music so you need to find a spot before that repeat to make your audio splice that won’t be noticeable, or just fix the end credit music by removing that repeat.

That is a problem, yes. SparkySywer, how you did with the end credits? I think best would be using Harmy since when it switches to the crawl like you said and removing the repeat section in SE audio, but still you will need to switch again to Harmy audio because i think SE uses aditional music during the Special Edition credits so you can´t just remove the repeated section and continue with SE music.

Bruh I was telling you in PM I already made this years ago I just need to rerender it : (

As for why Trillary Dump’s restoration looks blurry there, it’s because the footage is taken from an upscaled 576i PAL DVD, which is the highest quality version of the scene in that form, at least until that film scan comes out. Unless you’re willing to have Naboo in the planets sequence (which is inaccurate to the '97 ending, plus it has Gungans in it, one of which says “Meesa free!”), this is the best we have right now.

Replacing the Endor shot with Harmy Despecialized would take care of that particular part, but the whole sequence is DVD quality, and you can’t replace the whole thing with Harmy or the Blu Ray.

Hello¡

Sorry, i was not understanding so i wrote this post. My english is not perfect and i didn´t understand what you were saying.

You are using Blu Ray for most of the ending, except Tatoiine-Coruscant transition and Hayden part right?
And… Which Sebastian Shaw footage are you using, the one from 97 Restoration or Harmy DE version? Ghosts look quite different in both versions, with Harmy´s ghosts looking more blue and illuminated.

ROTJ DE Victory Celebration Edit (a Work In Progress)
Time

Hello!

I am working on a ROTJ edit that combines Harmy Despecialized Edition 2.5 with the ending of trillary dump’s 97’s Special Edition HD restored.

I am having a lot of problems with this project, that shouldn’t be too much difficult, because my Sony Vegas Pro 16 is not importing neither Despecialized m2ts nor 97’s reconstruction MP4 ( converted from MKV) correctly. DE just can’t being imported in m2ts even after remuxing and keeping just video and one audio track.

I tried to convert it to MP4, converting DTS HD MA 5.1 or Stereo to AC3 and It doesnt work.

Vegas is able to import the video only in MP4 format but the audio track is not working, when i play the timeline there is just an annoying blurrying sound.

That edit would consist basically in:

  • Harmy Despecialized Edition until Ewok’s are celebrating on Endor before Han and Leía scene. So DE would stop right after Han looks to the sky on Death Star destruction.

  • Then It changes to 97’s version with Han-Leia dialogue , Luke fire scene , planet celebrations.

  • I have noticed that first Endor shot after Coruscant looks too much blurry ( and some kind of pixelated) and dark in the restoration so i would put instead Despecialized version of that same shot that does not feature overlapped Ewok’s and it can be easily put in transition with a bit cut (at the end due to the original transition) Coruscant scene.

  • Then the edit continues with the 97’s ending celebration and features just the Despecialized Edition end credits.

If someone know how to fix that problems or is able to make this edit with other programs please any help would be welcome. I dont have much experience doing advanced edit.

Help: looking for... BATMAN FOREVER - fan edit with deleted scenes?
Time

Hello people¡ I would like to know if there is a version of Batman Forever, official or fan-edit, that includes the deleted scenes and changes some things. I have never watched that film, but i saw some scenes in youtube and that keeps me hyped 😄 Problem is that later i found out that the film has a lot of silly jokes, bad reviews, extravagant
and campy villains… I am fan of the two Burton´s films, so i would like to know if there is some version of the film i could watch and enjoy.

Help Wanted: with my STAR TREK NEMESIS FAN EDIT
Time

Hello. I have been working since years in a fan-edit of the last of the classic Star Trek movies. The result, in therms of movie quality, is excellent i think. But in this process, i had to “create” some VFX using Sony Vegas Pro 15 to replace the green-screens in the deleted scenes with some background, and also fixing colour problems, trying to get closer to the quality of the non-deleted scenes, as the difference is yet bigger in the Blu Ray version of this Fan-Edit.

I did my best, but i know the result is not as good as it could be. I would appreciate very much if someone here could help me fixing the deleted scenes. Someone with experience in Chroma Keyer and Colour/Contrast fixing.

Greetings from Spain 😃

STAR WARS I FAN EDIT
Time

Hello. I am working with one friend in a Fan-Edit of the three prequel movies. We are from Spain and we will make them both in English and English with spanish subtittles. We have a problem with the spanish subtittles. We hardcode them to the movie using ffmepg, the command-line sofware we use for that, but it does not support SUP/pgs subtittles. This means we need to convert them to SRT. I tried to convert the PGS/SUP subtittles i obtained from the official Blu-Rays of the prequels to SRT using SubittleEdit program, and online using https://subtitletools.com/, but the result is not good, with a lot of errors like two words joined, or wrong letters. Do you guys know how can i convert the Blu Ray subtittles to SRT without any error?
