Looking forward to it!
I’ve noticed with upscaling, the first frame of every new shot looks odd. As far as i know, the only way to fix this is to then upscale a rendered out scene in reverse, then replace those odd looking frames.
I believe Adywan did this with his upscaled ESB:R.
Do you plan on doing this as well?

That´s not happening to me. If the source is previously cleaned-up and any combing, ghosting or frame-blending issues are fixed, Topaz shouldn’t have any problem. I´m using 2.6.3 version.

Star Wars Prequels Deleted Scenes (WIP)
Time

Hi! I’m back on work with this project. I have learned a lot about different ways to improve quality and I will give them a try with the prequels deleted scenes.

This previous attempt was good but the picture looked too much empty and waxy. Even more than the actual Blu Ray or 4k version of the movie which already uses a lot of DNR.

I will try to improve the quality while keeping the image more true to the rest of the film and minimizing the artifacts.

Cheers

Can you say what it is you don’t like about 1.3’s colors in particular?

And definitely food for thought on the pro calibration thing, but I don’t have an uncalibrated TV with those eye-blinding default settings or anything. Just mentioned my color temperature setting since I have an older TV with only three settings for that. And while for sure the more versed people in the scene like yourself who do editing will need that more so, I think many fans such as myself will just compare the screens of a few versions or pop on a couple and find what they like, when comparing. Even though almost everybody in this hobby’s monitor and TV settings will be different, there is still a noticeable enough difference between the versions that people can still kind of have a discussion and know what eachother mean anyway.

And I wasn’t asking for recommendations for a version to watch, since I know I prefer 1.3, so my calibration there wouldn’t affect what I’m asking. I was just curious why you good posters here didn’t like it as much as 1.4 and 1.6. If there is anything notable that it does that was fixed in other versions, since many seem to agree are improvements over 1.3. And with all three being so noticeably different from eachother, it makes me even more curious how people compare and rank them in their preferences. Thanks.

1.3 is the best forever. Don´t worry, it´s perfect.

ROTJ DE Victory Celebration Edit (a Work In Progress)
Time

Hello! Recently I came back to work on this edit, trying to create the best version for those who would like to watch the unaltered version except for the 1997 SE ending with the new music and extended celebration scenes.

ROTJ 83-97 Edit 1st Version 720p 10,0 GB MP4

Yotsuya made two versions, one of them combined mainly 4K83 1.6 with his own '97 ending ( used from the funeral pyre to the force ghosts that came from his own 4K83 color correction). But that ending showed a low quality as there isn’t an HD version of ROTJ SE 1997 available.

ROTJ 83-97 Edit B 720p 6,9 GB MP4

So he did another one using a mix of 4K83 versions (mainly 4K83 1.3 and 1.4) , and the BR for most of the ending (some shots were replaced by 4K83 as the force ghost or some BR flawed composited shots), so the planet’s celebration looked quite better than 97 while being the same shots. The problem is that BR celebration features Naboo and the transition from Tatooime goes to that planet, instead of Coruscant. Yotsuya managed to make a new transition from Tatooime to the BR Coruscant using a mask but it has a brief “jumping” that avoids it to be near perfect.

So now I’m doing a third version, this time in 1080p (and possibly 4K) based on his own, that will feature 4K83 1.3 except for the pre-tittle scene and his same BR/4K83 / 97 based ending upscaled to 1080p/4K.

As for now there isn’t any true HD version of ROTJ 97 SE, I think the best way to make this edit is using BR Coruscant and trying to improve the transition from Tatooine. There is also the possibility to use all 1080p sources for his ending and recreate the exact way he did. But I think the most important would be to make a flawless transition from BR Tatooine to BR Coruscant. If anyone here knows how to do it or knows someone who could make it please tell me.

Figuring out the best upscaling algorithms is always a worthy effort. Any updates on this?

I just finished improving most of the deleted scenes, using the PNG output that is superb quality and then putting all frames into a M2TS (Blu-Ray) file. I also managed to reduce a lot the distortion with movement or in eyes and faces. I´m adding some screenshoots below.

Mace and Obi Wan scene. Before and After.

Bullet scene. Before and After.

Padme´s house scene. Before and After.

Senate scene. Before and After.

Padme´s Room scene. Before and After.

I don't think Revenge Of The Sith is as good as everyone says it is.
Time

I think ROTS is thousand light years from the OT movies and even inferior to any of the sequels, I would only put it over AOTC and HS, because it’s screenplay is really weak. Dialogues are lacking depth and are always trying to be important but they are empty. The film tries to hide its lack of quality putting epic and dramatic moments every 5 minutes. I always liked the last 30 minutes that are connecting really good with the OT and feel like true Star Wars, but even the big duel is more a CGI spectacle than a real big quality cinema scene. The first dialogues during the space battle are too childish and the movie has some absurd or ridiculous moments like Palpatine’s face and expressions during his duel with Mace or Dooku’s death scene. And all the Utapau battles look dated and too much CGI charged, including that Grievous-Obi Wan battle that has really bad CGI and I personally don’t find any interest in that droid-organic character that is always coughing and it’s supposed to be a great villain. Order 66, Yoda farewell from the Wookies, Yoda and Obi Wan incursion into the Jedi Temple are some other moments I like besides the last half-hour of the film.

Star Wars Prequels Deleted Scenes (WIP)
Time

Hello. I´m working on improved versions of the Prequel´s deleted scenes, including upscaling them to 1080p. I think i´m obtaining really good results, however, some scenes have better source quality than others. At least the ones from AOTC, which are the ones i have been working with so far. I´m using Handbrake and Video Enhace Topaz AI testing different ways to upscale and fix them. The problem I´m having is that there is some kind of distortion in the eyes and faces, specially in movement scenes. It creates a “double image”, but only in some moments, and i don´t know the cause for the moment. Does someone know what may be causing this problem?
(Check Padme´s mother eyes and Padme´s face):

Here you have some comparison screenshots as an example of the results (Below are the improved screenshots):

*Should be noted that the DVD Ripped scenes are showed here in their source 480p resolution, but to compare how they would look in some 1080p/Blu Ray edit, we should put them here simply “upscaled” to 1080p, and they would look much worse.

Convert True HD 5.1 to WAV
Time

adywan said:

Create a new project. Set the audio to 5.1. Create 6 audio tracks on your timeline. in the surround pan box on each track, move the orange diamond to the speaker that corresponds with the surround channel you want to use that track for. Make sure you then mute all other speakers that are not being used for that track by clicking on each one. When muted the unused speakers will be a lighter grey. Right click on the surround box on each track and set the pan type to “Balance 0db” for the first 5 tracks. on the 6th track, right click on the surround box and set that to “LFE only” . Import your mono wavs and place them on the corresponding track. Now you can export them to wav64 using the “Sony wav64 - 48,000hz 24bit 5.1 PCM” preset. Don’t have “enable multichannel mapping” ticked. then export you file. When you want to import it back into vegas , import the file then drag it onto your timeline to create new tracks ( a blank area below your existing audio tracks). Don’t drag it onto existing tracks as this can mess up the channel mapping. It will create 4 new tracks: Stereo F&R, Mono Centre, Stereo SL&SR and LFE.

Wow thanks you. I managed to do it but as i already did changes in the project i need to replace the audio with that new one. If i import that new w64 file to the project replacing the other 5.1 track, will it keep the channel mapping of the old track?

Convert True HD 5.1 to WAV
Time

I didn´t have sound in Channels 1 and 2 with Pan Type set to “Constant Power”. I mean, there was no audo sounding while the peaks were there, and that channels were empty in the rendered wav. When i changed the Pan Type to “Film” or to "Add Channels (0db Center), that FR and FL channels have sound. My question is, if i want to keep the pan intact as it is on the Blu Ray, which pan mode is the correct? I just want to keep the 5.1 Ac3 Dolby Digital True HD exactly as it came on the BR. I see that “Pan Type Film” moves the speaker symbol to a middle point between the center and FR speakers in the FR channel panning, between the center and FL speakers in the FL channel, and so it goes…, while the "Add Channels (0db Center) " is just putting the marked rhomboid symbol in each speaker. Do you know which way is the correct to keep the channels intact?

When I import them to Vegas I don’t know how to map them or how to keep them loseless.

Set your project properties to 5.1. Each track should have a visual representation of the speakers, and you can pan the channel by dragging the orange dot (or however it’s represented in later versions) to the right speaker. Render as WAV/W64, and you won’t lose any quality owing to recompression.

Are that 6 mono files keeping the True HD?

There’s no quality loss upon converting to WAV.

I would like to obtain a single file because I’ve already edited a lot in the timeline and I could keep them if I replace the w64 5.1 file that I’ve using for the edit.

What’s incorrect about the w64 file? Use eac3to to produce one. As long as you set up each track properly, there shouldn’t be a problem.

I meant that I did most of the video/audio editing with the first w64 file, that didn’t have correct channel assignment. So i needed to replace it with another wav 5.1 that had the proper channel distribution. So I created another Vegas project, imported the separated 6 mono tracks and panned each to the right speaker (I hope I did that correctly). Then I exported it as w64 5.1 PCM 24Bit/48.000 Hz. Then I went to the edit project and replaced the original wav 5.1, that was directly converted from True HD 5.1 with eac3to, with the new one. I had to pan again the channels into the right speaker and it seems to be working well but I will do a test.

Convert True HD 5.1 to WAV
Time

Hello
I want to convert a Dolby True HD 5.1 track as it comes in the Blu ray to WAV so I can use it in Vegas.
At first, I converted it to a single 6 channel wav with eac3to, but I just discovered that the channel distribution when imported to the timeline is wrong.
I read about the problem and tried to use again eac3to to convert it into 6 different ways using .wavs in the command. That way I got the following files:
Stem C
Stem R
Stem LFE
Stem L
Stem LS
Stem RS
When I import them to Vegas I don’t know how to map them or how to keep them loseless. Are that 6 mono files keeping the True HD?
I would like to obtain a single file because I’ve already edited a lot in the timeline and I could keep them if I replace the w64 5.1 file that I’ve using for the edit. I need a 5.1 wav that contains the correct channel distribution and True HD, and that it will be imported to Vegas correctly to the 6 audio tracks when replacing the incorrect w64.
Cheers

FRAME BLENDING PROBLEM

Working on a scene, i´ve tried to use frame blending and it produces a better result but the problem is that, Frame Blending does not understands the cuts and creates this problem:

Do you know how can i keep the better quality of the blending without having that problem. And another question, why the frame blending is not removing all the distortion/iterlacing? Check this comparison, even the frame blended screenshot shows some distortin in border areas.

Fixing Deleted Scenes for an Edit
Time

I am trying to fix some deleted scenes from Star Trek Nemesis in order to make a fan edit.
The first scene is inside a 480i clip, and has been telecined from 23.97 to 29.97i. It has interlacing problems, bad edge enhancement and green screens that I intend to replace with my own video/images/VFX.

I have tried different programs and Doctor M recommend me to use AVISynth to apply some filters, starting with:

directshowsource(“Star Trek Nemesis_t27.mkv”)
TFM(pp=2) #Matches fields to created 29.97 progressive with duplicate frames
tdecimate() #Removes duplicate frames to restore 23.976 fps.
crop(8,90,-8,-98) #Crop the broders on 4 sides.
Spline36Resize(1920,874) #Resizing as directed by Aspect Ratio Calculator http://www.haku.co.uk/ARCT.html
Addborders(0,102,0,104) #Pad out with black borders.

Deinterlacing plugins seem to work, and it works well reverting to 23.97. but when cropping and resizing it looks really bad. That’s why I tried at first to use an AI upscaler to improve the quality, or at least maintain it when resizing to the official blu ray material configuration.

The source Blu ray has this specifications:
Video
Codec: MPEG-4 AVC (23.90 Mbps)
Resolution: 1080p
Aspect ratio: 2.35:1
Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1

So, given this information, I would like to know how to proceed. If I’m correct, I should apply all the filters and cropping before trying the AI. But I don’t know exactly which improvements can be made on it and how to apply them. I also don’t know in which step I should try the green screens treatment.

This is the scene itself (first part is an interview that I won’t include in the edit).
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jU7V4DGi8OYjLcFL5mDAEks8W71HygoS/view?usp=sharing

I would really appreciate if someone can help me with this as I’ve been since 2015 working on this edit.
Cheers

Help Wanted: for my 'Star Trek Nemesis' fan edit - help with deleted scenes...
Time

I´m working on a fan edit of Star Trek: Nemesis. Is well known that the deleted scenes were cut mostly to give the film a more commericial appeal and more action, but they could have made that movie much better. My edit cuts most of the redundant and worst scenes while trying to recover the missing scenes, at least the best ones that could fit properly in the movie.

The problem is that the quality of the avaliable sources for the deleted scenes is really bad. I have seem here that there is people who have done an excellent work in the deleted scenes of Star Wars movies and i would like to know if do you think there is some way of doing something aceptable with the Star Trek Nemesis ones.

I would really like to restore that scenes, but i don´t know if it´s possible. That one has strange interlacing and it also is ocuppying just a centered part of the screen, so even in 480p (source resolution) it is not in full screen.

SONY VEGAS AUDIO DOUBTS

Ac3 tracks aren’t compatible with Vegas. You’d need to convert it to an aac, mp3, pcm, or wav file. The PCM option is probably what you’re looking for if you want lossless. I believe the stereo downmix refers to what you are hearing while editing if you edit your 5.1 mix in stereo. Your render will output a 5.1 surround track if you select that in the settings.

Hello.
I have not been able to do that. Star Wars I Blu Ray uses a DTS-ES 6.1 English audio track that can be converted to WAV but as i had already done changes in the project timeline, cutting parts and altering audio, i can´t replace just the audio. In adition i was using an AC3 5.1 downmix of the 6.1 DTS-ES that was importing good to Vegas with apparently correct channel distribution but suddenly it is importing only Channels 1/2 in the 6 previous audio tracks in the timeline.

In addition, i don´t see how you can export loseless 6.1 in Vegas. When starting a Project it doesn´t allow yo to choose anything besides Stereo and 5.1. And when rendering, i couldn´t find it as well. I went to customize render options, 7 channels but it says it doesn´t fit with the project properties.

So… Is there any way to import a loseless 6.1 track to Vegas that can also be rendered after editing?
Is there a way to replace the audio only from the videofile? I tried to mux mp4 with the loseless WAV and it said mp4 doesn´t support it. Then tried changing mp4 to m2ts and it worked but the file can´t be imported to Vegas. So i can´t do nothing…

I have also noticed that the epic force ghosts scene in ROTJ looks different in every version.
Check this screenshots:

From 4K83 DrReel Color Correction (4K83 1.6)
https://i.imgur.com/lbQaGAE.png

From Harmy Despecialized v2.5 (newest version), clearly looks more “blue”. Why?
https://imgur.com/sLur4VQ

From 97 Special Edition :Again there is a color change? Now looking more “grey”.
https://imgur.com/NypkA7m

Which of this is the more similar to the way it was shown in ´83 cinema?

Most likely Despecialized 2.5 is the most accurate out of these three, followed by 4K83 1.6, or somewhere in between. For the original effects shots (as well as a chunk in the middle of the film that was out of focus on the Blu-ray) in DeEd 2.5, Harmy used a scan of a Low-fade 35mm print. These prints are very blue, and Harmy corrected the LPP shots to match the Blu-ray footage. 4K83 1.4 uses my own color correction which I based directly on an LPP scan made by TN1. I made the image warmer and wanted to diminish the blue push, but blue objects on screen still have a stronger blue tone, similar to that Despecialized shot. Though I don’t think it’s quite as saturated. It probably would have looked like that when projected back in the day.

I am still very confused. Because some people is saying Harmy is not much accurate to the authentic color because BR that is their main source is really far from te original colors but other people is saying BR is more accurate than 4K because it uses OCN as source. So… should be distinguish between being accurate to the way it was shown in theaters in 1983 and how the OCN looked?
Why do you think it would have that blue saturation when projected in theaters? I mean, if that blue saturation on Harmy comes from a Low-fade 35mm print and 4K83 comes from theatrical release prints, shouldn´t be 4K83 the most accurate to when it was released in 1983 theaters?

SONY VEGAS AUDIO DOUBTS
Time

Hello¡
Not much time ago i asked here because i had problems when importing dts or ac3 extracted from blu ray movies to Vegas. Someone recommend me to covert the audio tracks to suitable formats for Vegas like Wav and import audi and video separately. I had tried and it works but i have some important questions:
1 - The Wav track is loseless? I mean the channel distribution and levels are the same as in the DTS/Ac3 track? Is there any quality loss?
2 - Before i began with converting to wav sometimes i managed to import the original Ac3 track (always had to downconvert when we talk about DTS-HD-MA or Dolby True HD tracks), but it showed in Vegas as 5.1 Surround (stereo downmix). What is that? Does it means Vegas is changing levels and everything to stereo while appearing as 6 tracks in timeline?

Info Wanted: The Prequel Trilogy - awful DNR - are there better versions available?
Time

Hii friends
I remember when i went to the cinemas back in 99,02 and 05 to watch SW Prequel Trilogy and i don´t remember the awful DNR that has been applied to this movies in BR and UHD releases. I would like to know if there is some edit or version in HD quality but keeping the film´s grain strucure and at least reducing some of the artificial look. I own all SW movies in BR but in the end i don´t ever watch them in that official format except the sequels.
For OT i watch Harmy, except ROTJ that i watch an 83-97 edit that uses 4K83.
So for PT i would like to own a BR quality version that is free of that (for me) horrible treatment.
