Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I don’t even really want to make the final result 4K HDR - I’d like the result to be a regular BD, as I feel like this way the sources will match better and there shouldn’t be a significant loss in quality anyway but would like to source the HDR BDs to use the better dynamic range for color-grading.

Hi Harmy (and others),

Huge fan here!

Is it really worth the time to go from the current 720p to 1080p when we could go to 4k? I can definitely see going SDR instead of HDR, but why not go for the full 4k?

Please keep in mind I am not an editor and have no idea what the difference in work load/flow would be.

Regardless, I am anxiously awaiting Despecialized 3.0!

Thanks!

Whatever. I wage $50 that Disney announces Blu Rays of the original unaltered trilogy before 2016 is over.

My guess is that when Lucas sold LucasFilm to Disney, he likely included a clause that says if Disney releases the original trilogy in any form, that the rights to the film revert back to Lucas or his estate.

We all know that Lucas hates his original versions and considers the ā€œSpecial Editionsā€ as his true, and only acceptable for release, versions.

Otherwise, Disney would have released the original trilogy as soon as they got the rights as the originals would be a HUGE revenue stream.

In other words, Harmy’s, and others, versions are likely the only pure versions we will see for a very long time.

This is amazing! May I ask why the ROTJ v2.5 file size is 19.7GB? I just want to watch the film itself and I curious why the files so huge

It’s encoded to be BD25-compliant, so the file size is huge because it takes advantage of the space on a 25GB disc.

Interesting… It seems to me that the majority of people watching it would be doing so digitally (since it’s a web file). Will he be releasing it in a smaller digital format?

I convert the mkv file to m4v using hand break. The files are still 19GB but my AppleTV 3&4 can handle it so the movies look amazing on my 50" plasma.

I also create versions at 3500kbps so I can throw them on my iPad for when I travel.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE…when will you release it???

I think everyone is excited… I know I’ve been checking the boards multiple times a day for a release announcement. However, since the despecialized editions are labors of love and not official, we all have to wait until Harmy feels that his final product is ready. Be patient and you will be rewarded.

Harmy, and others here, do amazing work and their efforts are always well worth the wait!

None of the fans want to wait until then or later for the unaltered versions of the original trilogy to be made available in HD Blu-Ray or whatever home video format is in the future.  Our friend Harmy made the next best thing, so at least there's that.  If only Lucas wasn't so stubborn and just let the National Film Registry have the film negatives to the threatrical versions for preservation.  If Lucas is retired from Lucasfilms, that means he passed ownership of his company to someone else.  Thus what he should have no say what version of Star Wars is made public.

I agree 100%, which is why I've already enjoyed watching the despecialized editions a few times already. I just wanted to point out that although periodicals like Hollywood Reporter and Variety have said that 20th Century owns the distribution rights in perpetuity, that that is not 100% correct. I would re-purchase (probably for the 5th or 6th time) the entire trilogy if Disney/Fox released remastered, but despecialized, versions.

As it stands now, Harmy's excellent product is my new go-to version of the trilogy.

Thanks again Harmy!

...and since Fox owns ANH until the end of time...

To this (umm...) day I still don't understand what that means. :P

It means that Fox owns the distribution rights for Star Wars forever, if they don't make a new deal. In contrast to the rights for Empire and Jedi, which will (or already did?) return to Lucasfilm.

Actually, not forever... Distribution rights are apart of Copright Law. For works made before 1978 (and owned by a corporation), the copyright lasts for 95 years from the date the work was published. So as of now, Star Wars enters public domain in 2073. Of course, Congress can extend the copyright terms anytime they want (like in 1998), so it could be later than 2073.

Just a thought... But...

I'm sure both Fox and Disney would love to sell the original versions of the trilogy since they only care about making money and selling the original trilogy would be a cash cow. However, I'm willing to bet that Lucas foresaw that possibility and he likely included a stipulation that says Disney and/or Fox cannot release the original trilogy without his permission otherwise the rights to the films revert back to him.

He may not be a good filmmaker, but he is a savvy businessman.
