Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Well just watched ESB. No changes that i could spot other than the Wampa arm. Same old crappy 2004 colouring with the blown out detail in the bright areas in Cloud city.  They haven't touched one lightsabre by the looks of things although i would have to run it side by side with the 2004 version to confirm it, but i'm 99% sure that this is the case. Same dull cores and pink lightsabres. The audio is the same as 2004. the lightsabre sound is still there as Luke exits the cave, yet the lightsabre is still activated.

So far it seems that there has been a lot of Bullshit coming from Lucasfilm about the work done on these blu-rays

I'm going to leave Jedi until later on. need some sleep now as it's 5:20am here now. This is the film i am most dreading watching after the few changes noted so far.

ESB remains the least tarnished of the OT. Awesome... I guess.

Also,

lol

What's your Personal Canon?
Time

So far, it's only the original unaltered trilogy.

After years of intense training, I've been able to basically erase the prequels from my head. When I watch the original Star Wars trilogy, I don't think of the prequels. Even when Obi-Wan does his speech ("And he was a good friend."), it just doesn't come into my head anymore.

I haven't watched any of the prequels since Episode III came out. Unless you count the Plinkett reviews. In which case... I've seen them countless times for the past couple of months =P

I'd like to give some of the novels/comics a try someday.

It's just that the OT is viewed as the past, and only desired by a niche market. The dollar signs are not large enough. It doesn't matter that people would do the work for next to nothing. Most of us on here know more about the presentation of the films than anyone on the Blu production staff. (We should just petition them to let us freelance the work.) Ever since Robert Harris mentioned that he knew the OT existed in decent to good condition materials and could certainly be presented well instead of the LFL claimed "they don't exist/deteriorated/destroyed" there's been no validity to their argument. Now they hide behind the supposed cost instead of the personal vision.

See, this I don't buy. Criterion releases movies handled with great care to an extremely niche market. How do they get around this? they price their Blu Rays at higher prices, usually in the ~$35 range, but sometimes even in the ~$50 range.

If the OT was actually released, it would sell because it has the Star Wars logo on it. 'nuff said. If making a profit was really a concern (which we all know it isn't), then I'm sure the niche market would be willing to shell out ANY amount of money necessary.

The fact of the matter is, George doesn't want these movies out there. And that is a nearly impossible obstacle to get around. GOUT was just a "shut the fuck up" to the fans of the original trilogy. I can't see him following that up in his lifetime.

Is somebody checking the comments on YouTube ?

The best voted comments are personal insults on Adywan, and all comments which defend him are hidden, because they "received too many negative votes". The interesting thing is that most of the people (actually ALL which I checked till now) have registered on youtube ONLY to write these insults. Could these guys be LFL employees ? Any ideas ?

It's certain members over at blu-ray.com. The same bunch that like to throw personal insults like little kids in a playground.

I tried to read the Star Wars blu ray thread over at bluray.com.

I had to close the tab after only reading about 10 comments. Childish is a good word.

No reviewer will dare criticize this release. They're all going to gush over "SW on blu-ray finally!" because they could otherwise lose opportunities for future advance discs from 20th Century Fox or Lucasfilm.

It's going to be unanimous praise across the board. Just look at these reviews for the 2004 dvds. It's laughable, man!

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/12228/star-wars-trilogy/ - "bright and vibrant"

http://www.digitalbits.com/reviews3/starwarstrilogy.html

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/545/545786p8.html

http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/starwarstrilogy.php - "black levels deep and rich"

Exactly. You know a couple of months later, they'd refer to the 2004 releases as "flawed sets, with horrible colors and terrible audio. And Hayden as a ghost? Really George!?!?"

Same exact shit will happen with these Blu Rays.

Okay, who actually HATES the Prequels
Time

I legitimately hate episode 1.

Episode 2... it's horrible, but I can ignore it.

Episode 3 I can actually sit through and watch. It's still really, really bad, but it's the best of the prequels.

Honestly, I'm good just watching the RLM reviews over and over. The best thing about the prequels is that they spawned those reviews.

I am far, far, FAR more offended by the special editions than the prequels. As I'm sure you all are.

I mean, I'd update the title or something, but is anyone really surprised that they're busting out the Laser Discs for this release? Did anyone really think they'd give us those documentaries in respectable quality?

Unbelievable. It is a god damn travesty that this garbage is going to sell like hotcakes to the uneducated masses.

Ridley Scott doesn't care for some of the cuts of "Blade Runner," but he can see the other side of conversation.  He approved putting those alternate cuts out there for completist sake, and because he knows there are people who prefer a version that he doesn't.  He's fine with that because the version he is fully satisfied with is out there.  Whether other people agree with it or not is not an issue with him.  It's sad that George Lucas can't perceive art in the same way.  Having the OOT shouldn't diminish whatever satisfaction he has for his personally approved, updated versions.  And for as much of a "cash grab" and merchandising mentality he has, it's that close-minded artistic viewpoint which overshadows his desire to cash-in on releasing something which is in such high demand.  Thus, it is purely and simply ego we are combatting in this matter, and I've dealt with a few egomaniacs over the years.  It's a tough fight to win.

Well said. George is just a fucking baby.

I'm pretty sure he made Star Wars to make money from getting us to watch robots hit each other and kids drive too fast.

His friends thought a bit of story and characterisation would be a good idea.

In the seventies George listened to his friends.

In the eighties George discovered that puppets were easier to control and burps were funny.

After Jurassic Park he came to the conclusion that puppets were so 20th Century and farts and poop were funny.

I think people forget this too often. I highly reccomend everyone on this forum read "The Making of Star Wars". The old George was very different from billionaire George.

When working on Star Wars, Lucas revised the script multiple times. The first draft was pretty much completely different from the final draft. This was because he was getting continuous feedback from (now famous) directors that he graduated film school with. They would critique each others works, and George would listen, making appropriate changes.

Do you think Lucas did this for the prequels? Hell, do you think he did this for Jedi? It's obvious that he didn't like the lack of control he had over Empire with Kersh in charge of things, so for Jedi, he decided to choose someone he knew he could control. Hell, he even admits it:

"I've got to find a director* who's willing to give up some of his domain to me and is willing to work with me and accept the fact that he's essentially doing a movie that's been established, that ultimately I'll have the final say."

*replace director with EVERYONE ON THE SET when talking about prequels

I think I've said this before: I think they should probably let The Criterion Collection handle the OT restoration.

Yes.

Shit would be awesome.

Nice image.  But it should just say Star Wars.  No episode IV or A New Hope that was added in 1981 i believe.

Yeah, I was thinking that too.

However, I don't see Criterion ever getting their hands on the film. Call me naive, but I think we'll get the OOT a few years after these blu rays. It's going to be a frustrating wait, and we'll probably have ESB and ROTJ Revisited by then, but George has already backed away from the whole "all copies of the original should be destroyed" ideology.

Now, he needs to back away from the "it's too expensive to remaster" bullshit.

Is anyone boycotting this release?.....

Good question. If they are, they're not being very vocal about it.

A "theatrical edition" search on Twitter today revealed SEVERAL tweets in favor of boycotting this crap until the theatrical editions are released. I was happy to see that.
