Looking for an old prequel theorising article
Time

Way back when TPM came out, I recall there was a website that posted some long form articles on what was bad about the prequels (doesn't narrow it down, I know) and also what implications there were to the overall canon.

Specifically, I recall that after ATC a lengthy follow-up article was posted that made some bold statements about what Lucas could do to try and save the prequels. This article had a number of interesting points of view which tried to find justifications for Obi Wan and Anakin/Vader's actions in the original trilogy versus their knowledge from the prequels. This included the theory that Lucas could make the third prequel reveal that Obi Wan, Anakin and Yoda all conspire to reveal and overthrow the powerful Sith by concealing and training Anakin's son in secret while Anakin goes deep cover.

Something along those lines. It was a long while ago so my memory is sketchy.

Does anyone remember this long-form opinionating and theorising and possibly have any idea where it can be found today?

RatDVD - Please Use.
Time
It's easy to not notice any loss in quality when it's a re-encode from a professional dvd that you dont have the source to compare it with. Presuming that there is no quality loss ignores the very nature of Ratdvd.

Ratdvd re-encodes mpeg2 video into a proprietary video codec. It is not magic. It's very similar to xivd in many ways but (imo) not as good a codec. Use this on a fan preservation which is already an edited version of a dvd or even a laserdisc capture and the quality will suffer.

The only advantage of ratdvd over doing an xvid encode (or similar) is to maintain dvd menu navigation. It is not a superior codec to xvid or x.264.

Many fan preservations already create smaller xvid encodes for download. These are better quality than Ratdvd re-compressions.

Xvid is cross-platform, Ratdvd is not. Ratdvd distributions will only work on windows. Xvid can work on Windows, Mac, Linux and a large number of other devices.

So while Ratdvd might be fine for studio dvds if you do not mind the loss in quality, I don't see it offering any substantial benefit for a preservation or fan edit project in terms of quality when compared to other simpler distribution tecniques such as xvid encodes. The benefits of features are potentially outweighed by the proprietary nature of the format and I personally would not restrict who could see it by choosing a windows-only format.

any chance of a 'prequel trilogy' cover - or perhaps a six disc 'complete saga' cover in the same style?

I would but I have no interest in the prequels whatsoever

If you like I can send you the photoshop file which will have all the basic elements. Adding pictures and swapping the text around should be easy enough.

(though on an aesthetic point I think having a retro look for the prequels is out of character. If only Lucas had actually decided to do his prequels in a retro late-70s way...)

I've completed my Original Trilogy covers in retro blue on white. They look great in white dvd cases. Levels are adjusted to fit my printer, you may need to tinker to get a bold colour image.

Download the full size ANH cover here
Download the full size ESB cover here
Download the full size ROTJ cover here
Download the full size trilogy boxset cover here

These are slightly ink-saving. I've taken some liberties with the images in places - both ROTJ posters used here are modified. The one on the single dvd case has been altered to make Luke's lightsaber green (that always bugged me since I was a kid - plus the green adds much needed colour to the image). On the trilogy case I've flipped the Death Star so that it's the right way round. The ANH image could be nicer but it prints out pretty well.

Let me know what you think.

Ah, if that's the case then it sort of is and it sort of isnt. Womble probably does that because unless the final gop is closed it makes it hard to append new segments so it merely exports easily editable mpeg2 at the cost of the last few frames.

Not having it as an option, however, isn't particularly good design for a program that claims lossless mpeg2 editing

Star Wars DVD Covers

Just finished putting together my own cover for an OT boxset. I'm pretty happy with it - it looks really nice when printed on photo glossy paper as the white really shines. I was trying to find a middle ground between a clean modern feel and a retro design. Let me know what you think

You can download the hugeass version here (2.3mb)

I have a series of single disc covers too but I'll post those when I've done them all (haven't done ROTJ yet). They are the same design but with the real opening crawl and the same images for the films here except ESB is the Style B version which was too light to work on the trilogy cover.

.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)

This is a fantastic project and I'm so glad that it's being done right. I don't just mean using the xØ but in the way you are processing the image. I have a fair amount of experience in this field myself but my help isnt needed in the slightest because you are doing things exactly the way I'd do them if I had the time and resources and this makes me very happy.

Keep up the fantastic work - this is the most exciting preservation project going and I for one can't wait to see the final results.

Making your own box set?
Time
Has anyone made their own box set of preervation DVDs? I've seen a number of images in the covers thread that suggest they are designed for a dvd set with outer packaging.

If so, how did you go about making the outer packaging? Did you find any useful places online where you could buy handy materials?

I'm doing my own set and would really like to get 3 or 4 discs into a slip case with matching art.
