ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!
Time

Some great points raised in this thread.

I think Jedi (in terms of script-writing/ideas) was ultimately just rushed, changed on an almost daily basis, and George was utterly burned out & stressed from it all at that point, plus the divorce had taken its toll on him. He was originally going to set up Jedi with episodes 7,8 and 9 in mind, but made some 'fuck it let's just get this third chapter finished and I can forget about it' sort of vibe... It felt very rushed with some awkward things shoe-horned into the story (the other from Empire now being Leia, and Luke's Sister etc etc).

One scene I always felt would have been far more effective, and redemptive for Vader (after the truly horrific things he did in Episode III with wife strangling & kiddie slicing with a lightsaber! Still think that was a humdinger of a mistake by Lucas to make him go that far!) would have been for him to knock out Luke somehow during the dual. Face down & defeat the Emperor, much as it was filmed. Drag Luke into an escape pod and eject that.

Meanwhile the Allince is losing. Han is injured, Leia captured and about to be shot in front of him.

The space battle goes badly. Lando & the Falcon ARE destroyed trying to get to the reactor, after some heroic dog fights.

Back on the Death Star, suit malfunctioning, and with his last dying breaths, Vader relaxes, using his Force mind powers, get the pilots of his Super Star Destroyer to change direction to ram at full speed straight into the exposed area of the Death Star IIs superstructure, and into the reactor, destroying the station. Just before it hits - Vader rips off his mask. Gasps out "For my Children & Padme" and smiles. Then KAPOW! What a perfect redemptive end for Vader; killing the Emperor, saving his Son, destroying the Death Star!

Well, I liked the idea anyways ;)))

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

I just was saying I wanted to collect all releases of the 97 SE's but if this is to happen I may not be the one to do this I don't want a color correction of these just a preservation of the VHS copy of the movies I may make another thread to see if people want to see a VHS preservation but I will have to buy the widescreen version of the movies and buy a program that records the movies but with no frame I don't expect this to be perfect

Do you think you could learn to use some full stops, and commas please? People might take your posts a little more seriously then. But this is a thread for Harmy's work, not the 97 SEs...

Star Wars UK TV Broadcast dates
Time

Brilliant information - thanks! Ahhh the nostalgia!

I still remember the excitement of the Star Wars premiere in those 'only the lucky buggers can afford VCRs' days! I recorded the whole thing onto C90 cassettes using a crappy 'Bush' tape recorder and the built-in mic. Woe betide anyone that talked or coughed that evening hahaha! :p

Remember reading the Star Wars themed TV Times over & over again prior to the broadcast.

Would love to see a TVS (we were in the South East TV region) recording of that premiere, complete with all the adverts.

Great days/memories :)

Star Wars Trilogy LP Preservations (Released)

I will do my best to figure out the newsgroup and grab the out of date editions.

@7eventiesFN - I also can't afford to get copies in order to be considered for something like this.  I will respect your decision either way, but I am curious if there was another way I could be considered for your release.

I'm afraid not - these are meant as preservations for those that already have the LPs, but either cannot play them or haven't got the gear to get the best from them. It's like Harmy says with his DEs you need (or should) own the blurays first to own his versions. I.e. support the original copyright. Otherwise it's just outright theft/piracy. Which is why I won't have this next set torrented. Still need to work out how to work it. Might ask users to post a picture of them with their LPs as 'proof' and do it that way. Still to be decided - need to get them transferred again first ;)

Incidentally the original LPs can be bought on Ebay extremely cheaply. Average condition versions are practically at give-away prices. Worth hunting down...

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

You should give JJ's 2 new Treks a go, they're alot of fun. Plus you can be safe in the knowledge that since it takes place in an alternate time stream our old friends are still safe.

Most rate 'Voyage Home' very highly, not me. Sure in isolation it's a very funny lighthearted comedy, but a Star Trek film, I think not. Where is conflict between the characters, the dastardly villain, the agonising moral decisions and of course where are the thrilling space battles?

If ST's 2-4 where a standalone trilogy like the SW:OT, fans would be up in arms about STIV! Can you imagine if we'd walked into theatres in 1983 and discovered that after the epic build up in ANH and ESB, ROTJ had just been Han, Luke, Leia and co d*cking about in 1980s San Francisco and saving some Whales?

btw Would love to see Shatner's much longer cut of ST5 before the studio ripped it apart.

Star Trek TMP and IV are - I'd argue - the most Trek like of the films since the TV series. You don't need another (yawn!) villain of the week or yet another damned space battle for good Trek! And plenty of conflict between Bones and Spock (as always) and Kirk & Spock & McCoy at various points in the story. Plenty of moral decisions too throughout the course of the film; They're saving Earth without the go ahead from Starfleet, and using Time Travel to do it! Trek IV is first & foremost about the characters, and it also had the balls & imagination not to be yet another revenge based story, and had a worthwhile message at heart too. It's Classic Trek! Much of the humour in the 60s series was very goofy at times (esp. the last few mins on the bridge of many episodes), and Trek IV nailed that exact charm/chemistry perfectly. Trek needed lightening up again after the Wrath of Khan and Search For Spock! I loved the environmental theme too, even though it may come over as heavy handed by todays standards.

Interesting how different Treks appeal to different people! :)

Agreed completely on the desire to see a recut/re-edited version of Trek V though, without any budgetary constraints. There's a semi-decent film in there somewhere.

Star Wars Trilogy LP Preservations (Released)

Well after buggering up my login details, and having zero replies to my requests for help fom admin here, I've had to create a new user-name - boooo!

Anyways, the good news is I am working on V3 of these, plus I now have a MINT condition LP of Return of the Jedi now too, so the saga shall be complete at long last ;)

Rough time-scale, around Christmas I should think. New/better gear, and some new pressings...

...to be continued.

- 7FN.

P.S. please do NOT PM me for any links. To be frank, am frequently pissed off by people who rush in, create an account here, grab what they want, then go without a word. PMs for links will be ignored...

P.P.S. Somebody on here (mentioning no names, but it doesn't take a genius to work it out) is using my 24/96 based work, perhaps with a little further clean up work and a bit of EQ, without my permission, on another site. Somebody on a FF 'Shrine' somewhere.....! Not good form. If you're going to use something of mine, even when I've said I'd prefer if you didn't, at least be honest about it...! I don't go to all the effort and expense with top quality gear and hunting down & evaluating pressings for people to freely use my work and pretend it's theirs... A moot point now, as all current versions 'out there' should now be considered out of date. As I said before, this is an archival project solely for those that already own the LPs. And if that glorious day comes when they're ever remastered & re-released officially, all copies should be deleted... This will be a private release. I'm not having V3 freely put about all over the net, and having people using it and claiming it as their own work...
