The AFI Silver here in the DC area will be showing ESB in August. I remember hearing last year about how the ESB screenings here and there were actually still the old 2k dcp, so I suspect this will be the same. Kinda puzzling why they wouldn’t be showing the newer 4k version, but then again LFL/Disney might not want to prepare new dcp’s until it’s time for an actual grand re-release in 3D and Dolby Cinema and Imax.

Of course, AFI Silver could theoretically be showing an actual ‘97 print (the info listed says 1980/1997, so it can’t be any older than that), but I doubt Disney even wants pre-2011 versions out there anymore.

I remember back in 2020, Disney change 4k DCP to 2k DCP after they decide to re release it in UK, makes me feel very sad.(Does US play 2k or 4k)I am very sure that DCP the lucasfilm logo was the color changing gold one but not the whole silver one in 4k version. Luckily this year ROTJ is the 4k DCP. But I just really want to watch ESB in cinema with 4k dual dolby DCP or maybe 8k in the future.

I think Disney is going to release the original trilogy again in theaters in 2027 for the 50th anniversary.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Maybe they’d even do it the year before the big anniversary, sort of like how George was originally planning the SE for ‘96 before realizing Episode I wasn’t going to be ready in ‘97.

Right now the rumor is ‘26/‘27 for the Rey movie. I could almost see them attaching a saga 3D trailer to Avatar 3 at the end of ‘25 in the style of that first SE trailer, starting off just 2D with the glasses on … but then …

“If you’ve only seen it this way, you haven’t seen it at all.”
