Oh I agree, I never understood why they didn't restore both and include them. I don't really care about the SE's, I never watch them anymore. I just thought it was kind of cool to see another scene with those actors back in 1997, that was before I realized that these versions were replacing the real movies. I just thought it was, well, a Special Edition; something that would be released once just to celebrate the anniversary, so at the time I wasn't angry about anything yet.
SPED changes I like in "Star Wars"
SPED changes I like in "Empire"
SPED changes I like in "Jedi"
Everything except the CG Jabba (I like the scene, but they shoulda made him look like ROTJ Jabba), the new shuttle sequence in Empire, and Jedi Rocks. And I could do without the beak. Would also keep Yub Nub.
Original, Special Edition, and Prequel trilogy gusher. Not a fan of any Disney era Star Wars.
I like the old emperor scene better, but I can understand why Lucas would want to put Ian McDiarmid in there for ESB special edition. If he wouldn't have ruined the dialogue in the dvd then I'd have been able to accept it, but the new dialogue was poor so the change ended up being completely ruined
The only changes I would keep:
SW
ESB
ROTJ
I'm really not opposed to a fully specialized edition being officially available, but only if it's done correctly and the OUT is given equal or greater attention. Neither of those are the case, currently.

I agree; I wouldn't have nearly as big a problem with the SE if we had the OUT available. I like the Biggs scene too but I think it'd work better if they restored and included the original Tosche Station scene at the beginning as well.
The inclusion of parts of the mono mix in ANH SE.
I agree. I cobbled together a GOUT-synced custom sound mix for ANH with the '97 mix as the default, for exactly that reason.
The only real visual change that I think was well done was the extra footage of the dance lady in the Rancor pit, even though it was pretty much ruined by Jedi Rocks. Unlike the Wampa SE scene, the added material didn't kill the intensity of the scene, and it still left the mystery of what was actually down in the pit for when we see Luke fall in. Sure I still prefer the other way where we just hear the screaming, but I like how the SE gave us a glimpse of terror on her face when she saw the door open. I should also add that it wasn't until recently that I learned that the extra footage was filmed for the SE; I always just assumed that it was extra footage not included in the final cut of Jedi, similar to the Biggs scene.
The Person in Question
Don't seem to have ever actually posted here. Film-by-film:
Star Wars:
-Cleaned matte lines, if there were any.
-The 2004 Krayt Dragon call. Perhaps not as intimidating, but it seems more original to me. Can't remember where but I am pretty sure I hear that other sound somewhere else in the film.
-I could live with the way Adywan edited the Mos Eisley introduction, even if I prefer the original. So I guess this counts.
ESB:
-The new shot of the Slave I following the Falcon. That's actually a fair improvement.
-Again, any matte fixes. The ones on Hoth aren't done too well, but they're there. Good concept.
ROTJ:
-The new Oola scenes. Too bad they came with Jedi Rocks.
-As was said earlier, the inclusion of Luke hugging Wedge.
-Any and all matte shot improvements.
A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
I would be better off stating what changes I didn't like. I hate every single PT-related parasite (ghost scene, NOOOO, Fett's voice change, "wessa free", etc.). As for others, I dislike Greedo change, Luke's scream in ESB (1997), Jedi rock (but the original scene was just as dumb), Sarlacc beak and I think that is it. The rest of the stuff I see as an improvement.
真実
Wow, I never wrote my list? I thought I did. So ....
1997 A New Hope
- the new Fox logo
- dewbacks (even when I think they're overused)
- the new sandcrawler model
- the rebel fleet leaving Yavin 4 next to Lorne, but I HATE the next shot
- I have a feeling that I like some of the trench battle shots, but I'm not willing to re-watch it just to make a list
2004 ANH
- the Jabba scene (I'm probably the only person on this planet who likes it)
- the corrected cellblock matte painting
2011 ANH
- I hate this shit, I've seen it once and I never plan to watch it again
1997 ESB
- the new Fox logo
- the new wampa scenes - I LOVE them ! I was always hoping they add the whole subplot, but at least they added the shots which explain what actually happened to Luke
- I can't decide about the Cloud City shots - while I like what they TRIED to do, the actual execution looks pretty poor to behonest
2004 ESB
- can't remember ANY improvement
2011 ESB
- I hate it
1997 ROTJ
- the new Fox logo
- the new Sarlacc - it FINALLY doesn't look like a butthole! But the rest of the scene is still as stupid as it always was
2004 ROTJ
- nothing
2011 ROTJ
- nothing
2001 TPM
- nothing
2011 TPM
- the colour correction on most scenes, and the better cropping
200x AOTC
- nothing
2011 AOTC
- nothing
2006(?) ROTS
- nothing
2011 ROTS
- just the tiny fact that this is the first time a theatrical VIDEO was released on home video
I'm glad they fixed a MAJOR plothole in Empire. When Vader is walking down the corridor, he says, "bring my shuttle," and this just created so many more questions. Like where was he going, would the Star Destroyer know that he was on his way, how far away was he from his shuttle, how long did it take for the shuttle to get to the Star Destroyer etc. etc. and it actually ruined the WHOLE MOVIE! I'm so glad that Lucas provided answers to all of those questions, I mean, who cares that it just interrupts the excitement of Leia and friends escaping Cloud City? Screw consistent pacing!
Oh! and I LOVE the new Jedi Rocks dance scene! It really sets the tone of the whole Jabba's Palace scene! The upbeat song and gibberish baby talk is exactly what you'd expect to hear in the horrifying and disgusting place that is Jabba's Palace!
I'm also glad that they added an explosion praxis to all round objects that explode in space! It's so realistic! I'm not sure if any of you knew this, but explosions are actually really pretty in real life and in the original versions they just weren't epic enough!
I also really like the scene where they add young Anakin's ghost. I was too dumb to be able to comprehend that the old actor was Anakin so I'm glad they changed it to-
Nah I'm just kidding, all the changes sucked ;)

Great minds think alike I guess. I love sarcasm
Nice. It reminded me of something you'd hear on Red Letter Media or something. I think in one of their commentaries the Plinkett character said something like that about Jedi Rocks
The Person in Question
Yeah, in the Star Wars commentary track when the added scene of Han talking to Jabba was playing.
I don't like any of the changes in Star Wars or Jedi, but the 1997 version of Empire is almost the best version of the film, in my opinion. The only changes that I do not like from it were the Vader's star destroyers stuff after the duel and Luke's scream. Otherwise, pretty much everything is a positive change. I still heavily prefer the theatrical cut, though.
None love the originals just they way they were but i do love Adywans edit of A New Hope i have his version of Empire and a bootleg of Return Of The Jedi much better than that trash that came out in 04.
Being born in 93, I grew up with the 1997 Special Edition. All of the changes made in this version don't bother me, but I do understand why people hate them so much.
The 2004 changes are a mixed bag. I don't mind some of them like Ian Mcdiarmid replacing the old actor in ESB or the extended celebration in ROTJ, and I love the added "bonk" in ANH when the Stormtrooper hits his head on the door. The only changes I hate are like Boba Fett's new voice and replacing Shaw with Hayden in ROTJ, which I hate the most.
The 2011 Blu-Ray changes can go to hell. This is why I have never bought the Blu-Ray version.....

But I don't see the real need for changes at all
Most of them were added to fix things Lucas couldn't achieve back then when he wanted to.
Some of them are useless indeed, I'm not arguing about the silliness of the rock covering R2 or some extra creatures on background that weren't needed........but all in all a good 75% of the changes just make the movies look better, more coherent to the saga, and less ..."cheap".
You have to understand it can be very very very frustrating for a creative author (like G.Lucas was, and is still now in some ways) not to be able to get his work the way he wanted. It's a struggle many director have to face, but for Lucas in '76 that was a true nightmare: i think many of you know the facts and the making of A New Hope, he was truly the only one on that set who actually believed in what he was doing. Everyone else, actors included, thought they were working on a poor bad b-movie and put not as much efforts as he did.
I'm a fan since 90's but I can't share all this absolute rejection and criticism towards Lucas works. As a matter of fact every thing he did after 1983 (new movies, changes to the old ones...) was never judged clearly and impartially.
Anyway I want to believe there can be a compromise, and maybe one day we will see new 4K transfers of these 3 movies in blu-ray, with both version of them in every disc.
Yeah, Lucas sure was the only one who put any effort into working on the original film . . .
*faceplam*
Among the crew on set? No doubt.
Together with the director also the post-production team and the newborn ILM made miracles.
And by the way, I said they "put not as much effort as he did", I didn't said there was no effort at all. Spare me your facepalm and read better next time.
If you spare me the revisionist nonsense and dare to imagine that everyone on that film might have worked hard to do a good job on it, even if some of them thought it was a bit silly, then I'll do you the courtesy of believing you are simply misinformed, and that your slight of the original crew was unintentional.
Otherwise, I'll be forced to assume you have no idea what you're talking about, and will be inclined to think it not worth hearing in the first place.
