What is everyones influence   as far as music goes?

I play guitar..or as I like to say I am a tele player first and a guitar player second. Bit of a Tele snob. As far as my musical influences  ..being from the south I grew up on traditinal country music and bluegrass with a lot of 50s rock n roll thrown in.

My personal favs being Elvis, COnway Twitty, Waylon jennings, Gram Parsons, Earl thomas connely,  the stanley brothers,  flatt and scruggs, keith whitley, ricky skaggs, ricky nelson, lionel richie, sam cook.  When I became a teen ager and started making friends  I  discovered  80s rock  like motely crue and white snake,  phil collins and genesis. I am 36 and I just disccovered DIO a few yrs ago  when a friend suggested I listen t rainbow in the dark. Great song.Same friend also gave me my first taste of ozzy  with goodbye to romance.  Also a great song.

My heart is with country and bluegrass but I also love 80s rock and slow rock ballads.  If there are any other musicians here id love to know your style taste.

Nice!  I've been playing for 20 years and own several different guitars and basses, but my 'Seafoam Green' 1994 American Tele is the third love of my life, just slightly behind my wife and daughter ;-)   I've fronted several bands over the last 15 years, although with a 15 month old baby I'm now finding it difficult to continue to play clubs.  Something about getting home at 3:30 am and having a baby waking up at 5:30 am isn't conducive to good mental health :-(

Musical influences?  I'm a crazy huge Beatles fan, and that comes through in my songs.  Guitar influences?  I love Andy Summers, Adam Jones (Tool), Joey Santiago (The Pixies), Jonny Greenwood and Randy Rhoads. David Gilmour is my biggest guitar influence though, I wish that would come through in my playing :-P

As a musican I respect all music. Even those styles I can not stand  listening to.  With the exception of death metal.  That is pure garbage that takes no skill what so ever to play.  Always makes me laugh when I start discussing music with some   kid  who thinks death metal  i so  difficult to play

Death metal sucks...its easy..punk is decent to listen to  but it is always childs play...most rock n roll in general is  fairly easy to play. that is why when you go to a bar  most bands play the same tired easy songs  . stuff like ac/dc  stone temple pilots, nirvana..etc..etc  and why you never find bands that play styx, yes,ELO,genesis,REO,RUSH,etc,,etc. I am not a big fan of those guys either but their music is complex and not easy by any stretch of the imagination to play.

I've been playing guitar for about 10 years. Though I never had the heart to ask my parents for a Fender Strat. I make my cheaper knock off guitars sound pretty good. Now that I'm on my own, I need to buy one.

I have a lot of influences. I used to try to be the next Eddie Van Halen, but gave that up when every other person I've ever met was doing that. So I figured I would develop my own style.

Of all my influences Mark Knopfler is the one that seems the most obvious in my playing style, though I am a little more on the classical side, while he is more rock.

I've made a lot of changes over the years. 2 years ago, I was doing the heavy Korn and Pantera sounding stuff. I just really think as far as newer bands, Heavy Metal is dead. The genre just gets tireder. It had it's moment, now it's time for something new.

I like to keep a very organic sound. I don't like all the effects, though I use reverb occasionally.

I also don't use much distortion anymore. I occasionally pop it out just to make some racket, but it's not something I use for my songs.

Overall, my sound is almost acoustic.

Does it not take some form of skill to play a guitar nevermind playing at speed?. Speed metal guitarists like Dave Mustaine could teach most pop/ rock bands how to play a guitar at any pace. You also dont have to be a kid to listen to death metal, im 36 and enjoy a good old Napalm Death or a Brutal Truth cd some days. I would also say that bands of yours such as Motley Crue and Whitesnake dont have the most challenging guitar riffs either.

I paid for college by working clubs as a jazz drummer.  Biggest influences: Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, etc.  I quit about 10 years ago and haven't played a gig since.  I'm so rusty now that I doubt I could.

I never claimed motley crue or whitesnake did and as a matter off act they are quite easy.  Difficult would be country lead or rockabilly or jazz and flamengo.

It is easy to hide behind a ton of distortion and  miss notes and pull off bends that  do not even hit the  exact note you are looking for.  you can  get CLOSE with rock and the blues  but with country lead  you have to be  prescice  because you are mimicking   a pedal steal which is done by mechanics...also   the spped at which they play leads   going through  clean channels and HYBRID picking on top of that..not  flat picking wanking like rock guitar..is just a  sheer testament to their skills.

Zack Wylde  said it best  "country lead players are from another planet" truth is they are not. they just put in the time to play like masters  and they dont hide behind distortion. they are truly the best of the best

I'm not a musician, but I was a rapper at one point.

My biggest influences were Queen, Jim Steinman, and ABBA.

Looking back, perhaps that's why I wasn't much of a rapper.

Shame, I've been searching high and low for a jazz drummer. Got too tired of all these young metal/rock drummers that play too damn loud.

My last drummer had his whole set mic'd so he could be louder.

Jazz drummers have the best dynamics.

Yeah I bet it's easy to criticize a music genre when you obviously know absolutely nothing about it.

People like you make me laugh.

I know guitar  and I know what is difficult to play and what it not. If you think metal is then you clearly know jack shit about guitar playing.

what makes it hard?  Do tell?  Explain to us all what techniques are involved  in death metal guitar that  makes it the slightest bit challenging?

Laugh  at yourself.

Death metal (and by extention, it's brothers thrash and black metal, not to mention its distant counsins crust punk, grindcore, and hardcore) is a passionate form of music, it's all about the energy and atmosphere far more than technical ability.

Even then, there are still plenty of bands who pride themselves on the complexity of their music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utqWrkVEQvI

Point is, you're the only one so far who's felt the need to take a gigantic dump on a music genre that you don't understand, don't like, and aren't even interested in completely unprovoked.

I listen to this sort of music all the time, I've ran into plenty of people like you who don't understand this stuff and think they need to berate people who get any kind of enjoyment out of it.

You don't understand it, thats fine. You don't have to like it. There's plenty of music I don't understand and I don't like (a lot of electronic music falls into that category), the difference is that I don't go around unprovoked talking shit about them.

Death metal (and by extention, it's brothers thrash and black metal, not to mention its distant counsins crust punk, grindcore, and hardcore) = JUNK

and  why didnt you answer my question?  what techniques are involved in death metal that make it a challenge to play for a good guitar player? I am laughing at you cause you  are spewing bullshit because you got offended when someone  trashed your taste in music.

well guess what..just cause i think its junk or call it junk does not make it junk. thats just my opinion.   Now I will tell you something that is NOT opinion  but is fact.  metal guitar is not  difficult and not challenging at all for an accomplished  or skillfull guitar player.

if metal fans want to get offended by that then so be it  but  the truth hurts I guess.   but again if you want to  try and educate me...what techniques are involved that make it hard to play?  id ,love to know...cause   guess what...there is NOT ANY  ....NONE!

suck it up and move on. its noise and it sucks to me.  no heart at all  and nothing but wankers hiding behind distortion wanking power chords and running through scales with slides, hammer ons and pull offs. nothing special, nothing hard, nothing difficult.

And I agree, metal guitar isn't too difficult. Shredders are a dime a dozen, what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter and never has.

Your entire post was pretty much about how it was a shit genre because it was easy to play.

But meh, maybe you're right about sucking it up, maybe I'm reading more into what you're saying than you really are. You'd think after 30-40 years of people saying this kind of stuff we'd be used to it. It's still aggravating though, especially when you make this sort of music yourself.

The best death metal is the simple stuff btw. Bolt Throwerrrrrrrr

I never said it sucked cause it was easy to play. I said I thought it was garbage music and  I pointed out it was not a difficult style to play. Buddy Holly and  the beatles are easy to play too but they are  no where near garbage.

I don't understand why you felt the need to bring up how 'garbage' it is anyway. It was kind of out of nowhere and completely unprovoked.
