Empire and Jedi have always had the episode and titles that they currently do since their initial release.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

The tiles for the prequels SHOULD have been:

Star Wars: Episode I: Another Trip to the Well

Star Wars: Episode II: Milking the Cash Cow

Star Wars: Episode III: The Search for More Money

Even though the Episode thing started with ESB (in the film), it was always referred to as ESB by everyone, kids, the press etc.

I don't remember the Episode numbers appearing on covers/promotional stuff until the Special Editions came out either.

Star Wars 1977-1983

Star Trek 1966-1991

Right, but the actual title of the film as printed on the movie itself always had the episode number.

Yeah, I remember thinging how odd it was to have the giant STAR WARS EPISODE ONE and the tiny The Phantom Menace. It seemed off because all the others were just Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, The Return of the Jedi. And now we had EPISODE I to add to the list.

For commercial purposes, no doubt.

The episode numbering is propably part of Lucas's endless obsession of late to prove that he had this big saga planned all along.
