totally brave noob wants to make a bluray fan edit

hi fanediter,s im bleedspeed. i have recently discovered the world of fanediting when i decided i wanted to do my own kill bill twba. then i found out i was too late it had been done already. however the process intrigued me. and i soon decided i would begin learning how to make a fan edit. i have done a little reading and grabbed a few softwares. then i thought long and hard about what movies i wanted to do and decided on a smelting together a trilogy. i am not sure if this trilogy has been done already but i have not seen it listed.i would like to keep it a surprise if i can so i wont go into what the movies are. but i must say it should work pretty well as the same actors and sfx were maintained throughout the trilogy. so onto the real skinny. i will be using bluray sources i hope. i noticed only one bluray edit so far on the forum and am wondering if i am getting in over my head being a complete novice at video editing. i would love some advice on how to edit my hd sources. or a link to a good tutorial describing cutting and chopping of hd material. the sources are in an mkv package however they are uncompressed. and include dts audio.the project will involve splicing 3 movies together to form a single epic film. i am sure there will be many scene removals maybe some audio cuts and video fades i am not sure of what i will need to do. so much help will be needed to bring my vision to life. mainly i am concerned about what softwares to use that will accept my source files they are mkv but i suppose i could convert them back to m2ts or whatever format will be needed to do my edit. mainly i want to keep my bluray quality, resolution, aspect ratio.so where do i begin? what will be the main software to start cutting and splicing? help is greatly appreciated and i apologize if these are dumb questions as im as noob as it gets. thanks a million.

What are the specs of the computer you'll be using, and do you have a Blu-Ray drive?

hi i have a dell laptop intel dual core with 4gb ram. the video card is meager but i can watch bluray on it. no bd drive on it. but the source files are ripped already to my hdd from my previous owned htpc which had a bd drive. i also have full dvd iso,s of the 3 films but the bluray version had an extended cut of the first movie. so i was hoping to use the bd versions.

i am already starting to feel bluray may be a bit over my head for my first fan edit. but like i said im brave. if it becomes too much to use the bd copys i have the dvd iso,s to work with in womble. there is for sure a noticable film grain in the bd,s that is not in the dvd,s as to be expected. but the picture is better too. i just wanna succeed without pulling my hair out and if i have to go to the dvd,s i will. thanks.

Well, it sounds like you can play HD video just fine, but a "meager" video card definitely won't help when it comes to editing the HD video.  How fast is your video card?  256MB, for example, is pretty low when it comes to working with HD video, but it can be made to work (that's what I have).  Anything lower and you can pretty much forget about cutting HD.

You say "Intel dual core" - what are we talking here?  2.8 GHz?  Less?

honestly it skips a little with 1080p. 720p plays fine. after a little tweaking of my media player i was able to almost stop the skips in 1080p.

Yeah, sounds like your computer has pretty much the same specs as mine, with the possibility of a slightly faster graphics card.  You should be able to do 1080p editing, but it's likely to be a bit clunky.

I assume you're using a Windows computer?  If so, I can't really help you out any more.  I'm a Mac Final Cut Pro/Avid editor, I know nothing about Sony Vegas or other similar Windows-based editors.

lol yeah windows for sure mate. as i have looked at the compatibility chart for sony vegas mkv or m2ts are not listed. so yeah i am leaning on the dvd copys. unless any one else can suggest a cutting/editing software thats compatible with mkv? or a good conversion ware that will allow me to keep the bd quality there is no point. thanks anyway.

hi adywan. the laptop has a 500 gb hdd of which about 350gb are free. not to mention plenty of external hard drives. i begin working with sony vegas hd movie suit last night. just starting to get familiar with it. i have learned it will accept m2ts. but i am starting out with another movie to learn with.

350GB likely won't be enough for a 1080p edit.  I'd get a terabyte hard drive, preferably one that has a FireWire or eSATA connection (much faster than USB 2.0, which - in my experience - isn't fast enough for 1080p video editing).  You can get away with USB 2.0, just don't be surprised if it stutters a lot for you.

ehh forget it.lol were not talking a 1080p movie here were talking 3. i am over it i will just use the dvd,s like everybody else does. but i am still going to need a lot of pointers. i am working in sony vegas now getting my feet wet with a test movie. this movie is well its a rough piece of work to start with. the movie has only been released on dvd in russia. with no english audio. but there is a workprint in english i am attempting to use the 2.0 audio from. problem is it does not sync up. the workprint has a slightly different runtime then the dvd. and some scenes may be slightly different. all in all the audio is mostly the same but its missing some sound fx and mastering. so i have questions about syncing the audio. i know i will be needing to cut up the film and audio into peaces and sync each part. i still dont quite get the cutting and splicing in vegas. but mainly i wanna know what file formats i should use for the video and audio. the video source is now a single vob which i joined the parts to make. the english audio is ac3 2.0. as i understand it may be best to convert the audio to wav for the job is that right? and vegas is accepting the vob file fine. which is good cause its uncompressed. the audio may need stretching or fading to fit properly not sure how any of that works. i am not looking for a perfect file here just a watchable one. some pointers will save me a headache. this is just a learning project to prepare me for the trilogy fanedit. ah and also i would like to upscale the audio to 5.1 how does that work exactly? thanks for any help.

well i had success using womble to custom sync the audio in the movie i spoke of last post. i am now stepping up to do the kill bill in 720p. i viewed one fanedit version of the whole bloody affair and well i was unimpressed with the video quality, the title, and the scene cut in between the two volumes.i think there is more that i can do there. i am now seeking to get a proper title going in after affects. and in consideration for how to fix the audio problem when the two films merge. at the end of vol 1 bill is talking to sophie and just as bill asks if bea knows her daughter is alive the end credit music fades in a few seconds too early for a proper cut. i think before the editor cut out the scene alltogether. but i felt the scene was too important to cut. so my next question  is would it be feasable to use some audio software to mute out the music but not the dialogue? not sure about how to do this but i know it is possible. i thought of using flstudio 9 to do it since it offers just about every audio editing capability possible. of course it would have to be converted to wave for editing then back to ac3 in the final. is this a good idea or is there a better way? thanks guys. coming soon will be the trilogy i intend to do but i am first learning all this with some other films.
