Hmmm…

Crawl

Pan down to establishing shot of TIEs flying over Mustafar

Cut to interior of Star Destroyer, as Vader’s helmet emerges and Kylo places his hand on it. Maybe Vader says something vaguely relevant or just the vision that was there originally. Kylo begins to walk off.

Color corrected TFA teaser shot of Kylo walking in the woods, crouching and lighting his saber.

A couple establishing shots of Mustafar, ideally with three TIEs somewhere in there

Main scene as Kylo slaughters people

The wayfinder says “Find me”

I LOVE the idea of using the Vader helmet shot before he meets Palpy, since it makes absolutely no sense why he would connect with it after learning that IT’S NOT VADER! 😄

I do think that DominicCobb’s two vision scenes and all his other work he’s done is quite excellent, so maybe you should find more ways to incorperate some of his scenes into this, since you haven’t really given as much detail on how you are reworking all the Rey Palpatine scenes yet! 😋

I’m honestly not taking anything away from the change/edit, I agree with Chase that’s it’s actually more effective to be used in this manner

…BUT

(And this isn’t strictly pertinent) I always interpreted Kylo attempting to commune with Vader’s mask after Palpatine’s reveal as Kylo looking to ‘truth check’ Palpatine’s claim that he was acting as the voice of Vader.

I always assumed that the implication here was that Vader’s helmet has now fallen silent to him, which substantiates Palpatine’s claim that it was him all along and now that the truth has been revealed he’s dropped the charade/disdirection?

Vader’s mask is no longer a vessel but simply an inanimate object.

As I say that was always MY interpretation.

IF that is/was the intention/meaning/subtext I would still certainly agree that there’s not ANYTHING that explicitly states that to be the case…so repurposing it more effectively elsewhere is still a great idea!

I’m only saying that I never questioned it’s placement before due to how I personally interpreted the meaning of it.

(Which I always quite liked since it was probably one of the few moments of genuine nuance in the movie…If they had followed through on that thread and pursued the effect it had on Kylo now that he realises his connection to his grandfather’s spirit is revealed to be nothing more than a lie in order to manipulate him to the will of a Palpatine

…but like the allusion to Finn’s force sensitivity and Jannah being Lando’s daughter I wonder if it’s inclusion is nothing but a tiny remnant of storylines that were cut?)

Anyhow, carry on everybody 😃

I felt like the scene where the Resistance finds out Palpatine is alive was rushed, I tried adding some slower paced music to try and add some breathing room and make it feel more sinister and serious.

That’s how I felt too, smpearch1981. I don’t mind the scene being where it is, so it’s not a pressing thing. Just seeing if it goes better being first.

I think having any establishing shots of Mustafar’s landscape be place right before the main chunk of the scene would help. He leaves the helmet, and we see an establishing shot or two before the slaughter begins.

If the TFA teaser shot gets used, and it sounds like it may not be as feasible as it did, it should be couched between two establishing shots.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

What is the source of the added music? I’d be okay with not even hearing the Emperor’s Theme at all here, if something Williams can fit in to enhance their shock and dismay.

A smart change and it works well, but swapping out music in such a dialogue heavy scene is tough.

Here’s the color-corrected alt take for “Rey Skywalker” from idir_hh (the alt shot is at about 20 seconds in).

idir sent the 1080p version, which is cropped heavily, so if anyone has the 4K please let me know! Otherwise we’ll have to fake it by adding grain.

Love everything that everyone is contributing to this project, brilliant. The only problem with the alt shot is that there should not be any rocky mountains in the background, they were removed in post in the rest of the shots. The landscape around the homestead should be flat. Anyway, great work everyone, keep it up.

Just noticed that, like TFA:R, TROS features a planet destruction directly following Kylo having a conversation with Han and resolving himself in a direction. Just this time it doesn’t make us feel anything.

The part of my theater experience when I could have been heard pleading, “Oh, for God’s sake!”

It doesn’t make YOU feel anything, lol.

Yeah, I felt a lot of things during that Han scene.

Blowing up Kijimi… not so much.

Yeah, I can absolutely agree on that. Kijimi was a neat world, but there wasn’t enough substance to it, and the unoriginality of what destroyed them hurts anything involving it.

The mirroring of the Vader Castle does make it seem like its a new shot (along with the removal of Krennic’s ship)

What can also help sell that too is if you don’t use the “whole” clip.

Here is a quick and dirty rough idea if moving the Vader helmet scene towards the beginning. As for the middle of it, I didn’t do anything to it since I wanted to show just the “kylo” footage with Vader’s helmet. Obviously the idea would be to alter all that flashback/imagery/sounds/etc. to fit more on the lines of “Vader” guiding Kylo.

Just super rough idea playing with a bit this afternoon:

After seeing your take on this I got inspired and tried my hand at it. I added Vader’s castle here, as well as replacing Luke from Ach To with Luke from Crait. I think it turned out relatively nicely.

Wow, this is seamless! Great job!

The only thing I might change would be having a more static shot of Fortress Vader in the vision itself (namely the shot from Rogue One where Krennic’s ship lands in the platform, with the ship removed). That way one could save the Mustafar/castle establishing shot for later, after Kylo finishes communing with the helmet. That way it would make the transition to the surface less abrupt. But so far it works great. Definitely a fan of moving the helmet scene to the beginning.

Thanks! I think you’re right, after watching through it a couple times I think that Vader’s Castle would need to be almost like a flash, and maybe the Wayfinder or the box should be shown right after. Then progress to showing the Luke and Han visions.

So with the final order fleet, the idea is just to make it an incredibly large fleet, and they don’t have planet destroying weapons right?

I was watching through A New Hope recently, and I think it was Han who said that a weapon that could destroy a planet was impossible, it would take thousands of ships to do that. This also reminded me of Knights of the Old Republic where Taris was destroyed too.

First off, I love all of the other work being done here and the other threads; it’s really great and inspired!

Because of this, it means that the audio in Poppasketti’s clip is unfinished as of now.

Yeah I figured as much. And since I need check out if a 4K source is available anyway, the video will likely have to be swapped anyway, and there’s the mountains issue, so the whole thing is incomplete! No worries, we’ll get there! Thanks to you and idir_hh for putting it all together.

I have to say, is there any consideration still to just using the audio from the alt take? While I love what idir and Chase have done, I find the camera angle from the alt-take to be off (because it’s from the BTS camera of course, in the uncropped shot you can see the actual cinema camera). It just seems to me it’s not the most cinematic angle and she should be looking more towards camera like in the theatrical. Still open to anything but I figured I’d share that thought.

Also, Poppasketti, have you made any more progress on the face-morphed “Just Rey” clip? That is the version I am keen on obtaining! 😄

I keep opening it and tweaking the audio, making it worse, making it better, then worse. The video side of the morph I’m happy with it’s just getting the audio to feel right that I keep fiddling with!

Right now I want to upres the lightspeed exit shot with the clip Hal sent me. Then there’s the falcon end shot, which I think is pretty close with Option E. I want to take a few days away from it and look at it fresh before making any more tweaks! I can make available any version people would like, it’s all full res. Speaking of, if anyone would like a clean video plate for the final shot, there’s two versions in my Master Clips folder, one with just Rey and one with no one.

I agree with this. Wasn’t going to say anything but the framing of the BTS shot is kind of underwhelming.

A (probably) rather minor thing that is recently bugging me is the alignment of the twin-suns over Tatooine in the final scene:

In the first shot (with BB-8 rolling by), the suns are aligned like this…

… while in the very next shot, they look like this:

So maybe I missed something, maybe they just move like this or maybe some time has went by between the shots. But maybe not.
Ever since I noticed it I can’t unsee it…

I think it’s supposed to show that the suns are rising instead of setting, signifying a new era. But since so much footage was cut in the ADHD editing process, that implication was lost on almost everyone.

I really liked the concept art of Rey sitting on top of the hut staring into the horizon, felt like a very Rey thing to do.
