I’m open to particular implementations of particular lines for Ben Solo, although the existing quiet for him works well. Any line wedged in there would need to feel worth breaking the silence.

And I’d say I’d leave it up to whomever wants to work on the milky eye removal. If that person sees fit to give her Sith eyes, fine. If regular eyes, fine. And if that person also wishes to add a flash of Sith eye during the flash of snake teeth, that’d be okay, too.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

In the interest of shuffling this thing a little closer to completion, let me regather some thoughts and ideas that are unresolved.

  • Has the “you probably don’t recognize me because of the red eyes” 3PO scene redub been pursued past hashing out potential lines? That little cluster of related changes seems to hinge on whether that 30 seconds gets nailed or not. (Fortunately, those small handful of changes stand or fall together and the rest of the R&D has basically been done by this point so we have both options.)

I should go back through and see what the consensus was back when we were talking about this. It seemed like the introduction with Jannah had been figured out, which had us stuck for a bit. I’ll go back and see what was said regarding the 3PO dub.

  • Is ‘Captain’ Hux being worked on? Is it just the one line from Kylo that would need to be changed?

I think Dom might have been messing with this, but this is something I could work on as well.

  • Anyone up for carving out a replacement for the Vader Castle shot on Mustafar using the ‘Biomes’ short? While the existing one is still very good in my book, I think about anything anyone can do with that material will be at least as good. Could be as simple as cloning one of the TIE fighters to make it three and use that portion of the shot.

Did anyone on here provide a link to that shot?

I slotted it in, realized it was gonna be a lot of work, and said to myself “eh someday I’ll get around to it.” The Kylo dialogue is surprisingly hard to get right, 70% of the work on my edit has been that and it still sounds bad, haha. Would love if someone else could do it honestly.

Any thoughts if Jon H. could provide version 3.0 of the Force ghost sequence to the fan editor clip package folder?

Yeah, and another problem with a lot of his dialogue is how it often echoes into the other channels, making it a pain in the ass to replace. I foresee that being a real challenge for how I want to tackle the Force bond duel for the Rey Nobody stuff.

But I do think I figured out how to get that reverb pretty close to the rest of the scene. Was there a certain take on “Captain” you felt fit best? And if it doesn’t fit with “Hux”, we could potentially just have him say “Captain”.

Also, sherlockpotter, did you stitch the very end of the “I am all the Sith” shot onto the end of “no match for the power in me”? If so, bravo, because I can’t tell unless I’m reverse engineering it. lol

All credit where it’s due: sade1212 is the one who did the incredible work restructuring Palp’s dialogue; I just stapled my line onto the end.

On that note, how do people think this version sounds? Like Hal said before, this line especially has to be pretty much perfect: https://streamable.com/mdw8w1

Oh, and I also nudged the timing of, and added a wee little exhale after, Rey’s “I…” to fill in the gap a bit (from removing “And-”), but that can go if people don’t like it.

  • Who can remove the milky eyes from that one super short shot of Rey on the Sith throne from the vision? We also talked about adding classic Sith eyes when she appears on the DSII, although I don’t think it’s necessary and would be happy with just axing the milky eyes. (“Oh, no, she’s going to turn 140 like her grandpa or something!”)

  • Is ‘Captain’ Hux being worked on? Is it just the one line from Kylo that would need to be changed?

  • Sherlockpotter, is the “I am a Jedi” line about where you feel totally happy with it? Please send it to me once it is, preferably as a single-channel so I can mix it in.

  • Is the “that’s not even a language” scene finished, or still in progress? Axlanian, please sent me what you end up being happy with and I’ll nail it down.

  • Anyone up for carving out a replacement for the Vader Castle shot on Mustafar using the ‘Biomes’ short? Just to add to this, we were also considering adding the background civil war audio and/or propaganda posters on Kijimi - maybe adding some newly recorded lines for that? - and also the Death Star Lightning shot. For the former, branching off of an earlier suggestion, it might be good to trim Poe’s lines “Everyone’s so afraid. They’ve given up,” so that it doesn’t conflict with the new opening crawl. So instead, the conversation would go:

POE: “I can’t walk out on this war, not until it’s over. Maybe it is. We sent out a call for help on Crait. Nobody came.”

KERI RUSSELL: “No, I don’t believe you believe that. Hey…They win by making you think you’re alone.”

Maybe cut “I don’t believe you believe that” too? I think it still works against “maybe it is”; but I can hear the cries now: “He doesn’t believe that ‘nobody came’ on Crait? He was there! He knows they didn’t!”

For the latter, Dat_SW_Guy was working on it (and may have finished it?), we just don’t have a finished effect rendered yet.

I’m suddenly remembering the scene in RotJ where a character speaking an alien language recounts the story of the previous movie to a cute group of childlike aliens.

This new puppet show is just making ST even more of an OT remake/knockoff lol. I think JJ would be proud we’re advancing his vision for the story.

I mean, I get it, but here it does at least serve a different purpose, which is to show the way Luke’s legacy and the flames of gay space communism Revolution against the First Order have spread across the galaxy.

Yeah, I stitched the two Palpatine shots together. All the lossless footage for that, and all the necessary audio for switching Palpatine’s lines (plus my version of “I’m a Jedi”) are up on my Mega account here (My post about this is somehow now ten pages back because of how active this thread is!). I tried to not use too many files so all the (single-channel) audio clips are in the one mp3 and the Ascendant/Theatrical flavours of the stitched together Palpatine shot are both in the same mp4.

Yeah, I mean Endor itself is pretty dry and boring once you’re done with the Speeder Bike bit. I don’t think it’s a very high bar to clear.

Mustafar:

Captain Hux:
https://vimeo.com/555127774

Puppets: Is the “clunk” sound effect of the puppets going to be added back in? I liked it. Either way, this footage blows my mind every time I see it.

Mustafar: The shot is good, but I honestly kind of prefer the one we currently have. It’s a lot more dynamic; the one from Biomes is intentionally a lot more slow and static and I feel like it doesn’t match the energy of the shots around it the way the current one does.

Captain Hux: This is absolutely flawless. I’m listening for the edit and it still sounds like actual theatrical audio.

If the puppeteers should also make sound effects is definitely the next question for this thing. Perhaps the clunk could be left in when the AT-AT gets hit? Obviously it isn’t a metal puppet, but if we threw in some other sounds, it might make it more obvious that they’re being made for dramatic effect from beneath the stage or whatever.

That’s perfect don’t think the puppet scene needs anymore alterations.

Not sure about Vader’s castle shot, only because of the Imperial Tie Fighters.

Put that Mustafar shot into HAL’s Rogue One so the current one isn’t technically a reuse in the 9000 saga.

I think that would be clear from the context - I didn’t think about the clunk sound at all until it wasn’t present.

Edit: I agree it should be when the AT-AT gets hit.

Regarding Mustafar, I honestly think the coolest part of the Biomes shot is the beginning, when the camera is flying above the lava river, and the castle stands imposingly on the top of the cliff in the distance.

Author

I’ve sorta done a 180 on the whole Mustafar establishing shot debate, I’d sorta prefer not to leave reused footage from Rogue One in V2 of TROS:A, so I personally see Biomes as the best option for a shot of the castle. Aside from the glaring issue of those clearly being Imperial TIEs, I reckon the greatest advantage of using that static shot is how much more simple it would be to add some trees in there on the horizon to make it all the more seamless when it plays back to back with the theatrical shots.

Luke could sing the Force Theme as he throws the fireball back! Or is that getting too meta? Lol.

It’s all looking really outstanding, RogueLeader. The only things I might still suggest - in the puppet show, could ThisIsCreation maybe toss the phrase “First Order” into the narration? Just to make it exceptionally clear that it’s them facing-off against Skywalker. (Just for the casual fans, ya know?)

And “Captain Hux” sounds really good so far! I can still hear a very slight lurch between “Captain” and “Hux”; but then, I’m looking for it, so I’d imagine most viewers wouldn’t catch it. Also, the other officers look over at him pretty much right as Kylo says “Captain.” (How do they know who Kylo is talking to before he calls out the name?) I wonder if it might flow a little better if Kylo starts his line just a split-second earlier, so that the others look over at him after Kylo calls him “Captain.” (“Oooh, buddy got demoted?? Haha, what a little squirt.”) And then I would suggest just cutting “Hux” entirely. “I sense unease about my appearance…Captain.” Everyone looks at Hux, Hux starts talking…I think the scene would still be accessible to the audience.

EDIT: I kind of agree with Cap about the new Mustafar shot…it doesn’t feel as dynamic as the surrounding footage. Maybe the shot could be sped up, so that it’s more of a flyover of the castle? Or would that throw off the TIE tracking too much? I need to rewatch Biomes I think…

Ooooh… I really like this idea!

The Biomes footage is quite leisurely in pacing. I had to speed up the Falcon shots quite a bit in my edit to get them looking right for a JJ production, so ramping the speed of Mustafar is a good idea IMO, maybe do a speed ramp from the distance then slow it dynamically to the spot where the TIE’s fly overhead.

Anyone think speeding up and also reversing the Biomes shot be an option so it starts with a flyover of the castle and ends with the flyby or do you think reversing the footage would just make the tie’s flight look a bit weird?
