I was playing around with tweaking the exchange a little bit for my version. So instead of “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me. I am ALL THE SITH!!” “And I…am all the Jedi.” I’d like it to go, “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me.” “And I…am [a] Jedi.” Suddenly it goes from a stupid game of one-upmanship (“I’m more powerful!” “No, I’m more powerful!”) to something that culminates Rey’s arc - both in terms of this movie (“rising” to become a Jedi, like Luke before her, rather than falling to the Dark Side as has been her fear), and also her arc across the trilogy, going from a poor scavenger to a powerful Jedi.

I mean, I guess you could argue that she’s accepting her responsibility of “a thousand generations live in [her] now”; but that seems less important to me than what she’s personally been struggling with this whole time. “I am all the Jedi” is the culmination of her arc of…trying one time to “hear the voices of the Jedi who came before,” and then suddenly being able to do it when the plot requires. Powerful stuff.

I’m just not sure how badly removing the word “all” will throw off the lip sync.

EDIT: Maybe I’ll mock something up tonight, if anyone is interested.

Very, VERY curious to see how this would turn out. Removing the Endgame moment would really help the climax. I do wonder how much impact those specific line deliveries would have if they’re trimmed down though. I hope it’s great!!

That would actually be so much better if it could be done right. Like she’s accepted she’s more than an orphan scavenger while embracing the light side at the same time.

What’s your version of that moment, in your rewrite?

I’ve tried to make the Force more of a New Agey Zen thing throughout, like it is in ANH. At the beginning, while she’s meditating, she is trying to empty herself of everything but the Force.

Rey: There is nothing in me but the Force. There is nothing in me but the Force.

So it sets up the climax:

Palpatine: A scavenger girl is no match for me! You are nothing!
Rey: I am nothing.
(lightsaber thunks into hand)
Rey: But the Force.

I’m not married to the idea, and I think it’s perhaps a little hokey or forced, no pun intended. I’d rather something that tied better to her character arc. If something better comes along I’ll change it.

I threw this together in about 30 min. VERY rough take for an extended ending but I just like the ending notes of the song from TFA way too much and I think it offers such a better transition from the end of Rey’s theme. Hopefully you like it Hal and someone with more tech than me and make it look official!

Eh, it works just fine but I think it’s good to let there be a moment like that with only diegetic changing and no score.

And while I’m open to extending the final shot(s), I’m still skeptical because I do like ending on the suns like that. It’s an attempt at least to make it feel like a real ending to the story.

And I must firmly veto ending on the literal opening shot of ANH.

Anything to make it breathe a little. I think not ending on the suns would show we are ending somewhere different. We’re done with Tatooine and moving on. Maybe just have a blank starfield without Tatooine or the final circle in?

The Falcon flies off and the credits show on the same starfield.

I really think we should move this discussion to the main thread.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

It’s an idea Hal’s open to. Until he says “NO” I think it’s fair game for discussion.

I think there needs to be a shot between Rey and BB-8 leaving frame, and the shot of the Falcon flying. There’s too much action that happens offscreen too rapidly (boarding the Falcon, the Falcon taking off), and I think that’s what makes it feel rushed.

Speaking of extending the ending of TROS, heres a test shot of the Falcon moving across space trying to match the look and lighting of TROS. Unfortunately, Streamable has decided to clip the dark and light values again making it look more contrasty than it should.

That looks great. I like the ascendant ending of the falcon flying to the suns but if done right I think extending the ending a tiny bit in space would be pretty cool. Also you all are doing amazing work with the ideas for this movie to make it more coherent, V2 is gonna be so solid.

So the old lady is gonna be Omega, right?

Y’know, my brain has a hard time discerning whether it looks like a Blender fan thing or a sophisticated computer panned FX shot from 1977, but it doesn’t strike me as 2019 TROS.

I know that’s terribly helpful, lol.

Well then again, that Tatooine episode from Season 1 of The Mandalorian used shots from A New Hope.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

Ooh… I really like this! I also like how subtle it is.

Looks great! Can’t wait to see how this evolves.

Man, I REALLY love this idea. lol.

I just can’t help thinking about it in the broadest sense of how each trilogy ended. Although the suns shot is really cool, we already got a suns ending with ROTS. I just think it’s neat that we’re ending the film quite literally where the first one started.

I know Hal doesn’t really like this idea but if you happen to make an edit with this ending DZ, I will be VERY interested in checking it out!

For reference, this is how the shot looks without compression
(I added way too much film grain so it looks noisy)

Have to say, I’m absolutely in love with this idea of showing the final shot as the opening pan on Tatooine, I think it should really leave the falcon more time to fly over before jumping to hyperspace though. The cut seemed a bit rough, but the music is perfect
