It looks really cool, but sometimes less is more, i think the edit with just the 4 jedi fits both with the movie and the canon.

I agree that while it looks cool, I would rather just have the original four.

Hello!!! hahaha, personally, I prefer the PHANTOM FOUR version. I have made this version because my best friend asked me for the favor, because he liked having more Jedi !!! but I prefer the original four !!! 😃

WHAT? Oh my god, that’s just amazing. My inner child just squealed with delight.

Lots of thoughts haha…

On one hand, people have mentioned that a lot of those ghosts don’t really matter for the Sequel Trilogy. Which, as much as I appreciate that argument, I’d counter-argue that Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin don’t matter to Rey in the slightest - so by that logic, the only one who should be there is Luke. (And, to be clear, I 100% still want the ghosts.)

I guess I treat the ghosts’ inclusion as a finale of the saga as a whole, not just the last three movies; so from that perspective, I think it’s valid to have the Prequels represented. They’re already in the voice over, so it’s like their whispers are them gathering to Rey before they appear visually. In that sense, I think they should all be included.

With Leia, I know her body hasn’t disappeared yet, but…I don’t care? Besides, if it is a bother, we could just move Leia fading away to maybe right after Poe leaves her bedside? Like, Poe decides to assume her mantle as leader, cut back to Leia, she fades away… (None of the other Force Ghosts even wait that long before fading away, so I think it’s fine. I like crosscutting Leia’s fading with Ben’s, but I’m also fine with giving each of them their own moments.

Technically, I’d prefer to keep some variation of the original music in the scene, rather than the trailer music. I’d also wonder, jonh, if it’s possible to have Luke and Leia fade out a second or two later than the other ghosts, so that they’re the last ones we see?

In terms of canon, I don’t care that the other ghosts “didn’t learn” how to manifest. According to canon, Qui-Gon taught Yoda, who taught Obi-Wan. But who taught Anakin? He shouldn’t be a Force Ghost either, then. I think it’s safe to assume that once Obi-Wan became one with the Cosmic Force, he could have taught other deceased Jedi how to return.

I would say that I’d rather cut Ahsoka - not because she hasn’t been seen before in the main saga, just because we don’t know what will happen to her in her new Disney+ series. (Yes, the implication of hearing her voice is that she died; but we don’t know that for a fact. Maybe she was alive, and just felt Rey reaching out to all Jedi, past and present? I don’t care if it’s in a book; the upcoming show may retcon it anyway.)

Yeah, lots of thoughts.

EDIT: And oh yes, the lightsaber should be purple lol!

Glad you agree! Are you able to provide us with a version of the new take but with the layers for the other ghosts turned off, and Rey with the purple saber? The updates to the existing four are great.

Holy shit, jonh! That’s super fun. I do agree with the consensus, though, that the ‘phantom four’ is a better fit for inclusion within the film itself. (Honestly, part of me braced myself while watching the clip for having to defend my reasons for sticking with the ‘four’ version!)

The ‘phantom four’ is what should’ve been in the film, and this is what the fun online clip should’ve been.

I do agree that a version that makes use of the tweaked improvements to the original four ghosts without the added ghosts would be wonderful. (With purple saber.)
Also, while you’re around, jonh, do you still plan to address the handful of tiny glitches in the Jedi haircut sequence? Once that’s done Nev and I can finish up the Ach-To sequence with its nighttime look. (In case you weren’t aware, it’s going to have a sunRISE now.)

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Holy shit indeed! Jonh, do you think it’s possible you could send us this clip for fan editors to use? Maybe someone could color correct the footage and do the same for the lightsabers. I think I like this version even more!

Or even better, replace Shaw and RotS Christiansen in RotJ with an aged up Christiansen. Shaw looks and sounds nothing like Anakin at all and should be removed from every version of the films, including the unmasking and especially in RoS:A.

I’ve always thought this was the right answer.

Isn’t this what we ended up doing for this edit? I can’t remember. It was either discussed or implemented. Because to me the Anakin ghost does look aged up a bit via Faceapp. (Come to think of it I’m pretty sure it’s just the light levels messing with my eyes).

I think replacing the Anakin in ROTJ with a better looking ghost is definitely the best thing to do, idk how you would replace Shaw from the unmasking though. He looks great in ascendant.

Jon’s Anakin is aged up from what I can tell with the lighting. I’ve not been paying a huge amount of attention to this thread (there’s a huge amount of updates all the time and I’d rather just wait) but I’m sure I saw Hal considering the Shaw ghost which would be a colossal mistake to me.

Deepfakeing. Actually, facially and all made-up, Shaw’s fine in the unmasking scene as he is supposed to be burnt beyond recognition (unless he ends up unmasked in Kenobi where he’ll obviously look like Christiansen) where all he needs is new eyes, his eye scar, and removed eyebrows.
It’s his voice that’s the problem, 4 of the 5 main actors for Anakin/Vader have been American (or Canadian using an American accent) so to suddenly develop an English accent out of nowhere is just suspension of disbelief breaking.

The only way it would be a colossal mistake is if he didn’t offer two separate versions (one with Hayden, one with Shaw). Otherwise, I could care less.

For me, Shaw is Anakin. I love Hayden’s performance in the PT and Matt’s performance in TCW, but I grew up with Anakin being the guy under the Vader helmet and the Force Ghost at the end of ROTJ.

IIRC, Hal’s said that he thinks Hayden Christensen as Anakin is a better fit for TROS, and I actually agree with that. It feels more like something that could have been plausibly released in cinemas by Disney in 2019, and for a project like this, that verisimilitude is important. But having the additional option of a Shaw version? Man, I felt genuinely emotional when I first saw jonh’s Phantom Four shot; I’d probably well up if I saw a version with Sebastian Shaw Anakin.

Obviously the answer is he constantly shifts back in forth between the two. It’s a Force Ghost glitch.

Wasn’t there concept art for TFA where Ben has a vision of a force ghost that’s constantly switching between Anakin and Vader?

personally i think this is the best deepfake of Hayden as Shaw out there.

I think a Shaw version would be awesome to see, and I’d be tempted to use it, but I do feel Hayden is better for this because he absolutely would have been there in the theater in 2019.

It’d also be awesome to see Hayden mapped onto Shaw in a seamless way in ROTJ, but then again I think any of that kind of stuff would be fun to see. But I have no interest in seeing Hayden in ROTJ. I really like the statement I always inferred from the original version that when Anakin died, he was ‘restored’ rather than ‘reverting’ back to the version of himself that was about turn evil anyway. Redemption, not undoing it.

As I thought about the possibility we could see Anakin in TROS before it’s release, I hoped they would at least let Hayden appear somewhat older than he did in ROTS. No long hair, but not necessarily elderly either. Just to break from “I am literally exactly how I was right before turning evil.” It probably would’ve looked too silly, but I’d have even liked to have him made up to resemble Shaw, maybe just his hair even.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

With Hayden being older, even having an older hayden ghost both in ROTJ and ROTS would fit, since it would fit him redeeming himself “at the moment” and not a … revert … back before going Sithy.

It would be interesting to see what the Kenobi series will do with Hayden … could be useful for any deep faking for ROTJ hanger scene…

Anyway, specifically for this edit, Jonh did age Hayden a bit, which in my book maybe even using some photos and whatnot of hayden now to use as a fake app to age him more to be in line with how he would have looked at the time of ROTJ if he wasn’t lava-ed

EDIT: my thoughts go this way specifically for a full on trilogy to link from the PT all the way to the ST. I have nothing against Shaw since he WAS Vader’s face before the PT … but for the sake of an entire 9 movie thing, like what Hal has done, having it all link together would be nice. I agree Shaw in his ROTJ makes sense specifically for those movies, but it would be good if there was a way to replace Shaw with Hayden’s face all old like both on the hanger and then his force ghost using fake app and what not to implement Hayden older to fit.

Yesss 100% agree!!

And hey, actually, to argue against myself, Hayden appearing as his ghost in 9 could make sense with Sebastian Shaw still being the ghost in ROTJ. Since Obi-Wan switches between the voice of Alec and Ewan, who knows how it all works. Their spirits do glitch, I guess lol. Perhaps they can switch appearance at will, and Anakin decided to show up as his Episode 3 self… as a middle finger to The Emperor? And then he’s Shaw in ROTJ, his true older self, because that’s how Luke saw him. And he wanted to be there like that for him and Obi and Yoda. (and he honestly just didn’t want to confuse his poor ol son.)

But either way, in a perfect world I’d like the option for either ghost, so everyone is happy. You can’t erase Sebastian Shaw!! He will still always be at least unmasked Anakin, even in the special editions with his eyebrows gone!!

Save the Sebastian Shaw Ghost! Save the dream…!
