Dumb new idea for that scene:

Trooper: “Who’s your operator?” or “Who assigned you here?” or something like that.

C3P0: “Oh, Babu Frik! He’s one of my oldest friends.”

Trooper: “Who’s Babu F-” gets shot

I really like this. Could even keep the same “Then why are you… wha?-” part?

Obvious explanation, but; the Trooper continues with the next part of his same old, same old soldier speech until he realizes he doesn’t know what a Babu Frik is and he’s caught off guard. Then blam. Extra funnies without being too on the nose! We know the Stormtrooper doesn’t know who Babu Frik is, and so he does not have to literally say his name for the beat to be conveyed as funny.

That Babu Frik line got cut from its original spot, right? I love this idea for reinstating it

The only potential problem with using the Babu Frik line here is, again, timing. We only have about 4 seconds to play with total, unless we can come up with a way to artificially pad out the moment. The Babu line alone is - what…3 seconds long already?

I think we might just be able to squeeze everything in if we can cut 3PO’s line to only “It appears I am…a Resistance Spy!” This still needs a lot of clean up - it’s mainly just to figure out if the clip will even fit here timing-wise. Perhaps the trimmed line, and a slight speed increase if it still sounds too rushed? https://streamable.com/ajq1ba

axlanian, thank you so much for the audio clips! They sound great!

And Burbin, we may never agree on which dagger version is a logical nitpick and which version is a logical leap; but if we go with the new dagger translation, we’ll have to remove the location being “inscribed on this dagger” anyway, so it may be a moot point. I guess we’ll see what happens.

Heck, maybe Rey senses how important the dagger is when she picks it up and telegraphs that there’s something significant about it. You know, like later in the movie, when she senses how important the dagger is, despite already having the translation? “Rey doesn’t know for a fact that the dagger will be relevant again! She abandons her friends for what might be a wild goose chase! Plot hole!” The dagger’s stupid no matter what. “It’s stylistically designed to be that way, and you can’t undo that. But we can diminish the effects of it.”

I know that NFBisms used some sort of VFX trickery to slow down a few shots for dialogue pacing reasons that kept the framerate smooth. I have no idea how, but my point is it must be possible somehow.

The shot needs to slow down either way for which ever line is chosen. It’s too much information to process no matter how much the lines are whittled down. If we were to keep the line placement over that shot as is, it would be one of the quickest and most jarring scenes in this movie. And that’s saying A LOT for The Rise Of Skywalker, lol.

Hard agree. If anyone wants to take a crack at slowing it down with Flowframes or otherwise, I’ll try retiming the audio and come up with a few options of how we can fit the different line options.

I was afraid of that. (Though, to be fair, the theatrical cut has 3PO literally blabbering incomprehensibly until the stormtrooper starts talking over him, so I don’t think noise overload is exclusive to our changes here.)

The problem with slowing, even with frame interpolation, is that it works really well when the camera is moving, but it becomes noticeable when the subjects are moving as well. (I did that in my “crash land” test from the other day, for example.) It’s just really hard to pull off when other things are supposed to be moving in the frame. For example, the stormtrooper gesturing and 3PO fidgeting in this scene. So, just to test, I slowed the footage here; but I don’t really think it works. It all just feels too “floaty” to me. I think we’d be better off trying to insert an extra shot of either 3PO or the stormtroopers from somewhere.

Hmm yeah, that very clearly becomes slow-mo. We’ll have to stick with the original timing and see what can fit. I’ll keep playing with the audio.

There’s no overhead establishing shot of that hangar that we could splice in at the beginning, is there?

Personally speaking, I see no problem with the clip Sherlock posted. I think it looks natural enough.

jonh! So great to hear from you, buddy! Love the FX breakdown. More and more I find the FX reels themselves are almost as impressive as the FX. I love seeing all of the nodes and layers of detail come together!

The only thing that bugged me was the last shot of when the Falcon flew away from the sunset, as I felt that it looked too slow and not in-line with the visual effects of the film.

It’s funny, I haven’t really looked at that shot in a year. Snooker and I went through about 5 different versions.

Ultimately we went with version E (pw: fanedit).

There is also version A, which is similar but does have a faster move.

The reason we went with E was because someone pointed out (I believe DominicCobb) that they used an extremely long telephoto lens to get the final composition with the sun/s so large behind Rey and BB-8. Therefore, because of the perspective, the Falcon should be large and not zoom across the screen so much.

And then there is Version D.

Version D is the way to go 😄 Brilliant

We already used the slowmo to fit in Luke’s “We’ll always be with you.” It worked there because it was just a close-up shot of Rey. Not sure if it can work as flawlessly here. I agree with Sherlock.

What do you mean? If it’s right before Rey calls the saber to her at the climax of the film, that wasn’t retimed.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I personally think this version (with “highly trained” cut) is pretty good and only appears not great at the moment because the audio is not edited yet to be perfect. I’m not very good at this, but tried editing it to something nearer to what it could sound like here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17_gf3tlhhyK1-y9tMf0LMunAwPDCgi1V/view?usp=sharing

Whatever comes out of it, brilliant work as always, sherlockpotter

There are some interesting shots from the new D+ original contents with a Resurgent Class Star Destroyer maybe we can use them for fanedits of the sequels?

I always get worried about disrupting continuity. I seem to get blamed for that a lot.

I agree with Jar, I don’t see any issue with the slowed footage. Even knowing it’s slowed down, I can’t really see it unless I’m really looking for it, and even then, it’s really not noticeable.

Wait, what D+ original contents?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”

Honestly, the solution I keep coming back to would be to comp a brand new shot of 3PO into the sequence. That may well be a pipe dream though - I personally have no idea what I’m doing with effects like this, so unless someone else is willing to lend a hand…?

Biomes has an extended Vader Castle scene could be helpful for someone. Also has additional shots of varying landscapes
