The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 469

You know what, that’s convinced me. I like the interpretation the three of you have kind of arrived at. I still think “birth” is more immediately understandable to a viewing audience, but just “her son” works better thematically (however much the execution of the theme is jumbled, I mean, ultimately it is TROS we’re talking about here).

Anyway, we should probably move this conversation to a different thread, since Hal’s already said his intentions with this bit in Ascendant.

Okay, how about this…does Ben have to factor into her stopping her training at all?

“It was the last night of her training. Leia told me that she…sensed…the end of her Jedi path. She surrendered her saber to me and said that, one day, it would be picked up again by someone who would finish her journey.”

It’s a bit less concrete; but hey, it’s not unusual for Force-users to make random decisions based on vague feelings. “Rey, why are you going after the Dagger?” “A feeling.” “Finn, how do you know about the secondary tower?” “A feeling” “Leia, why’d you give up being a Jedi?” “A feeling.”

We cut out any underbaked prophecy mumbo-jumbo, avoid implying that mothers can’t be Jedi, and dodge the pointlessness of Leia stopping being a Jedi in order to save Ben’s life, when Ben dies anyway. Plus, we make Leia’s journey her own, rather than her just being there for the sake of Ben’s. We would lose the hypothetical “rebirth” double-meaning, but we didn’t really have a plan for implementing that anyway.

And Cap, Hal wanted to include the “Birth of her son” line, so I think discussions about that change are actually relevant to the thread here.

@ Sherlock: That’s fair. I didn’t mean to sound grumpy saying that or anything; tone is sometimes hard to convey in text.

@ Jar: I really like that bit in the novel. I think it’s a really neat and tidy explanation for Leia’s decision to start and stop her training, it’s all in character, and I wish there was some way of translating that all to the screen in an equally concise way.

Cap, I didn’t think you came across as grumpy at all. So I’m sorry if I sounded offended. Ha!

At the risk of derailing the thread a bit, could I ask about the effects stuff that’s already been done for version 2?

At one stage there were 2 or 3 different people working on the crackling lightsaber stuff for example, did any of the final shots for that make their way to you, hal? Or the time of day change for ach-to?

Just wondering whether it would be acceptable, with the blessing of those responsible for the original work of course, to make the already finished parts available for other editors before V2 is out, same as the other stuff that’s in V1 currently?

Sorry, birth is still better to me, would be great to see it come alive.

Like many a great idea, lack of necessary source material may do it in.

You think if one of us invited Mark Hamill to a birthday party and got him tipsy, he’d record the line?

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I could get them to you if you need. Any particular reason? My Google Drive is busting at the seams, so I’d just upload them, let you snag them (because they’re large collectively), and take them back down.

I am looking forward to things simmering down with my job, establishing my new source of livelihood, and family and all that crap and get back to real shit: TROS:A V2.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Let me also just pass along from the dozens of redditors who have sent me PMs over the course of the last several days: You’re awesome.

There are way too many to respond to individually, but fortunately most of them seem to understand something of the collaborative scope that has gone into this project. To us here, it’s understood that a nod of appreciation from a viewer extends to everyone who contributed.

A user recently PM’d me saying that he watched all three of the Hal9000-branded ST edits with a few friends who hadn’t seen TROS at all yet. His feedback was very encouraging, describing how the beats seemed to all land as intended. In particular, follow up questions from the user to his friends revealed an intuitive read on the dagger whispers and underbelly Star Destroyer cannons without any confusion.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Bless this mess 😂

For one I’m hoping to use some of that stuff in my own big sequel edit, eventually! But I know that V2, as with all good things, will take time. Just being impatient is all, heh.

Also I’m getting to the point with AE where I’m hoping to take a stab at what’s left to do of the crackling saber, and I don’t want to already jump on stuff that’s already been covered!

Yeah, geez, Hal. Forget about the people that love and depend on you. What about Star Wars??

That’s fantastic to hear those wonderful compliments! I really can’t accept any of them myself, since I joined up after V1 came out; but I definitely share the sense of gratitude for everyone’s who’s worked on this film!

I’ve only been here post-V1 as well, but it’s still super exciting that this community I’ve been welcomed into is getting more recognition for its amazing efforts.

Also, I know Hal is joking, but man, do I also get it. All of my fanediting work has so far been done one-handed while bouncing a baby, hahaha.

Edit: That Leia edit also works seamlessly, Sherlock. It’s good that we’ve got options.

Hal, could you elaborate on this a bit more? You mean they understood what was happening with the dagger whispers, and they also just assumed the underbelly cannons were just cannons, and not like Death Star lasers or something?

I wanted add that I have the utmost respect for everyone who’s doing their own edit or scenes. I’m 40+ hours in working on a basic 30 second space scene that I’m also learning AE at the same time and it’s daunting. So kudos to anyone who’s spent weeks/months/years on your passion. You probably will never get the credit you deserve but I have friends that have switched to Fan Edits as their version of the film and to me that’s the biggest compliment ever.

From the PM:

"The knife landed 100%. They both said “yeah, the knife whispered to her and lead to the location.” Done and done.

Canons also made sense, neither felt like they really missed something. The explanation that hitting the cannons takes out the ships was sufficient for them. Gavin said he was actually happy it wasn’t over-explained or focused on because, in his words, “the previous two films leaned too heavily on that anyway.” Once I told them why the cannons were what they were in the original cut, they both said that the size and scope of the fleet was sufficiently intimidating."

I’ve shown it to a few people and they all seem to get that the knife is a guide in itself & after Rey holds in Kylo’s room that she knew exactly where to look, so it’s quite good that one small change completely fixes a dumb issue with the movie

I can confirm from having shown friends your trilogy edits that they are heading in the right direction and I’m frankly surprised they haven’t gotten wider attention yet. I’ve been pushing this cut to people for quite awhile (especially those who ask if I’m going to edit IX myself).

At this point, my only question is how long we debate the merits of what must be changed in the v2 before we’re all (mostly) satisfied with it. The scope of the project keeps growing and growing, and it’s hard to keep up with what’s going to be in the “final” version.

There are still a few effects shots in development, so we have a bit of time. After that, I believe there are two other potential “large-scale” changes being discussed (and then an endless list of smaller ones, of course!):

Revamped Dagger Guide Concept (so that it no longer has literal coordinates):

Things needed:

  • Change 3PO’s lines when he picks up the dagger (I’m working on a cut, I’ll have something by tonight)
  • Change dialogue when The Gang™ meets Jannah, to avoid mentioning Babu (Potentially done)
  • Design a vision for Rey to see the Death Star when she picks up the dagger in Kylo’s Quarters
  • Potentially have a moment where Rey tells Finn and Poe about the dagger (I have an idea in mind that I’m actually really excited about. Stay tuned…)

Revamped Kijimi Sequence (to show that the galaxy is starting to revolt against the First Order):

  • Track in some anti-First Order propaganda posters (I believe some folks volunteered to design some pieces?)
  • Add some more crowd-sourced voice clips (Things like “For Skywalker!” “Down with the First Order!” “For the Republic/Resistance!” “Protect the children!” (Tying back in with the earlier “Harvest more of the galaxy’s young” comment), etc.)
  • Add some blaster and explosion sound effects in the distance.

And then whatever else Hal had on the docket for V2… (I think this is the most up-to-date list?)

Hal 9000 said:

I guess it’s about time for another “where are we” post. By my records, here’s everything currently outstanding. Things that, if they were suddenly all turned in, I would begin encoding:

  • Sherlockpotter’s idea to remove Lando line “Leia sent me a transmission” (I just haven’t done it yet)

  • Depict Kylo’s TIE with a different color stripe after his first one gets blowed up (poppasketti working on it)

  • Have Rey’s saber sputter or crap out a little at end of DSII duel (Movies Remastered working on)

  • Have both sabers spark and smoke like it’s Friday night after Palpatine gets blowed up (Movies Remastered working on, or perhaps is finished)

  • Pasaana puppet show with Luke being a legend (snooker and/or RogueLeader filming and compositing elements - will also need a vocal dub to replace the one or two lines with something about Skywalker)

  • Remaining footage of the crackly blue saber (I believe Movies Remastered is helming the shots that weren’t already done by kewlfish or Luka Frik)

  • Fixed Jedi haircut footage from jonh to then be run through by NeverAr for regrading

So clearly there’s still several things outstanding but they are being tracked and will all come together in time. For the thousandth time, you’re all awesome and it’s an ongoing privilege to steer us along.

I also had a few other smaller ideas that were pending; but this comment is already too long, so I’ll bring them up again a little later.

Author

Thanks for compiling that, sherlock.

I don’t wish to hold up V2 indefinitely. As Sherlock says, we’re waiting on a handful of things regardless. I don’t feel any particular ambitions beyond what’s currently planned. However, until all the pieces are available, there’s no reason not to kick around discussion of ideas. Worst case we consider and discard them.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I haven’t checked in a while, any progress in the “Rey Nobody” department?

Author

 (Edited)

Not really. I’m planning to implement the concept once V2 is totally finished, and all the pieces for Rey Nobody have been hashed out, but haven’t been involved much with it. It’s got its own thread, though.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.
