Take your time Hal, it’ll be some time anyway with other aspects of the edit being worked on by you talented people on this forum!

As for dagger stuff, as other like Burbin and Rogue have brought up, visions will be the key.

First: There needs to be a vision when Rey touches the dagger in the “Vader Shrine Room.” I’d cut the scene to here directly going to and picking up the dagger, since in the original movie edit she goes for and focuses on Chewy’ stuff. Anyway, for this vision, it would use some clips that highlight the Wayfinder drawing in the “Old texts/Lukes Journal” and some shots of the Ocean Shore and DSII wreckage. I think, for the audience, it would be important to use the drawing of the Wayfinder for this first vision to connect with what Rey knows and what the audience has seen … which then leads to my second vision spot.

The next vision would be at the wreckage when Rey pulls out the dagger on the cliffside. These visions focus on some clips of the interior and the actual Wayfinder on the pedestal. The vision is clearer as she continues to connect with the dark side.

If anyone has the 4k rip of the movie, it may help to use that higher resolution for some Zoom in shots so it’s not 1:1 use of scenes/clips for these visions. Not saying it is an absolute must, but it may “look” better to the viewer maybe?

EDIT: It may be nice to have some vision shots of the inside of the DSII since in the movie, Rey was pretty much making a B-line to the throne room fairly easily, which even having a dagger that points to a spot in the distance would still take some exploring to figure things out since it is wreckage. So having some vision spots of some of the interior may help? Again, maybe using some 4K shots to zoom in random spots may help it not be a 1:1 clip use, but again helps the audience to see that Rey is being guided and kinda know where to go because of some of the vision shots. (she obviously isn’t getting a turn by turn directions, so her still looking around would be natural since she is getting just glimpses.

Also, having a vision during her looking out at the DSII may help the transition by hearing the Space Horses’ stampede coming into the shot can stop the vision too. It can help the transition between looking at the DSII wreckage/vision shot and having the crew being “interrupted” by the coming Ex Stormtroopers appear.

The first vision with Kylo in the “Vader Shrine Room” get’s interrupted by Kylo and the DSII wreckage scene’s vision gets interrupted by Jannah and crew.

I don’t think we need to go too crazy with all those visions, jarbear. lol.

However, I do think your idea of using a 4K version of the movies and scaling them so they’re not 1:1 is a good idea though.

Right-o, well, here’s the Jannah Introduction shot. I made the 3PO movement sound effects pretty soft, to match the original scene. I also tried exporting the surround audio channels, but feel free to double check that they’re all mapped properly; I’m just working with a pair of stereo headphones.

Any other thoughts on this scene? The new sound effects? Things that could be tweaked further?

It’s looking good Sherlock!

Yes, that’s pretty solid! I can’t tell in my head whether the shot of the guy would be better after 3PO’s shot. But otherwise it’s a pretty good version of the scene to use if we go with the 3PO dub.

Hal, the only potential problem with going 3PO -> Horse Man™ -> Rey, is that the only pause before Jannah agrees to help would be the extra shot of her I added. Not only might the scene feel rushed, but I’m also worried about drawing too much attention to that specific shot, because it’s just a reversed shot from earlier.

I dunno…do you think it still works?

Y’know, I think I do. That insert shot is pretty short, but…

Let me put it this way: if editing the scene conventionally, I’d absolutely prefer the second. However, with the fan edit-y constrains of just having the shots we have, perhaps not.

Well, we’ll have options if the dub pans out! Great work, sherlock!

I think it adds more to Jannah’s character to just be ready to help right away. She OBVIOUSLY knows they are not First Order. If she’s familiar with the Resistance that’s good enough

3PO -> Horse Man™ -> Rey -> Jannah

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

Heylo,

Excited to see all the new developments here with the dagger and 3PO!

Meanwhile, here’s a pass at recoloring the Tie Whisper to imply Kylo has other models after the first is destroyed. Sorry for the delay on this, I haven’t had much free time lately.

I also recolored some of the interior to give it a slightly new feel. This is not really noticeable in the first few Kylo shots, but more so when Rey is in the cockpit. Some of the rear panels now have a matching yellow design. I’m not married to this idea, but thought it was worth a try!

So cool how small details can suddenly make the movie feel more like it has sense 😄

Cool! Thanks, guys!

Hal, I changed the link to downloadable if you want to grab the prores to test it out.

The effect looks great but I’m not a huge fan of the idea in general. Sorry for being a Negative Nancy. 😕

I’m more neutral about it. I’d say it’s pretty obvious that Kylo had multiple TIEs. Whether they look different or not isn’t too big of a deal imo.

I will say that Poppa did some good work there. Just feel like his talents would have been better served by putting TIEs into Cinefy’s Mustafar shot or something else.

If the theatrical had this change, it would at least signal that someone somewhere along the line recognized “oh wait why’s he still got his ship after it blowed up?”

I think it’s fantastic. A simple and clever fix. Also like I previously said it feels like a callback to Anakin’s Starfighter:

I noticed the shot at 00:14 has some red accents and lights on the wall turned yellow that would need to be masked out.

Don’t get me wrong, it definitely deserves to be in every edit of TROS now that it’s been done. But at the same time, I can’t help but wonder: was it absolutely necessary to create in the first place? Because you can rationalize this continuity error with some simple reasoning. Can’t say the same about some others in this movie (looks at Rey’s lightsaber aggressively) 😉

Guess I’m a Debbie Downer like you, Sasquatch, haha.

That looks great to me!

However I am starting to wonder if it might be better to have the TIE in all black instead… Maybe that would imply that it’s a generic model he borrowed from some pilot to use temporarily?
