I definitely prefer this over the Rogue One shot. Looks great!

Excited to see the TIEs put in as well.

I think that new vader castle shot is very cool but it could use some work, the branches seem to moving all in unison with the wind. It makes it look like a 2d layer/a little cartoony, because in real life you’d expect to see each branch move slightly differently in distance and speed depending on their ‘volume.’ I think it’s a really ambitious thing to pull off to make an entire new digital shot, so other than that, since it’s a quick shot I think everything in the background is fine and looks good enough, especially the castle itself which looks amazing.

I can see how they all move in unison. It’s very subtle. I do wonder if they could each play a separate animation. But beyond that, I don’t think they look 2D.

I was thinking it would only be used for a couple seconds in the sequence; you can’t really see tree slant unless it plays for entirety, Gonna test out Tie’s and possibly some small hints of the planets volcanic past using either fire, small lava burst or smoke plumes.

My friend sent me this Nihilus Exegol edit Dr Cornelius made, I believe its on one of the other IX edit topics.

Clip: https://youtu.be/LLmAaf8SRwA

I personally really like the inclusion of subtle SW references like this, some will say stuff like this is too minuscule and unnecessary to bother including, just disappointing we didn’t get more tie-ins like this in the Sequels feels like the Prequel era and other points in timeline were erased/forgotten.

It sucks he even had to change that because all the creators of TROS seemed to care about was how massive those statues were, not what they were actual statues of.

Believe it or not, even in the expanded edition of the novelization they don’t acknowledge that the statues are of various Sith of the past. It only refers to them as “lords”, but not what they are actual lords of.

You’re joking, but… I was actually just about to suggest maybe having a split second shot of it exploding to preserve the grand reveal of the wreckage.

Anyways, in regards to Rogue’s ideas, I like either Option B or C. The more we thread links to what both the actual film and the fan edit puts forth, the better.

I’m sorry, but I’ll probably only be minimally involved in this for perhaps a couple weeks.

The castle shot is looking good so far! I guess if it crosses the threshold of being more favorable to most than the current castle shot it should be easy to swap.

I think the camera would need to have some motion, but I know you’re still working on it. The forest shot we currently have has predominately pine trees, and the main scene had only a few. This new shot has mostly non-pine trees. I wonder… could perhaps one or two pine tree elements be tossed in without looking goofy? Just a thought about how it could all come together. Also, one thing I like about the current sequence is going from lava river > lava river and an overlook > burning forest at lower ground. If it’s possible to add some sort of lava element or hint to the shot that’d help sell the sequence.

About the Sith statue, I’d be okay with swapping out a face for a KOTOR reference if anyone does want to do it. I thought the one presented a while back looked fine.

And lol, how many frames of the DSII does the SE have before one could discern whether the praxis ring is present or not?

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I kinda doubt Ian McDiarmid has ever recorded anything like that. The best you could hope for is a foreign dub for a language that not many people know.

To me it sounds like an idea that would work better in written form. Otherwise, the viewer wouldn’t be told what language they are listening to (Sith).

EDIT: One idea I just had that is very similar to your idea is how the novel constantly refers to how mechanized his voice is. Perhaps we could apply a filter to his voice to make it sound more robotic? This would disguise it as well.

I just came up with an idea, Kylo murmurs something along the lines of “the Sith language…” after Palps says “At last…” in Sith. Sounds a little… far fetched, but it’s the best I got.

Also, I feel Palps speaking in Sith is a better idea than applying a robotic voice filter to his regular dialogue, it reinforces his knowledge of the Sith.

(CONTEXT, for those wondering as to what I’m talking about)

Exactly, that’s the magic of quick shots, but I was just analyzing it in full detail. Maybe reduce the trees a bit and add the TIEs, or even like Hal said, some camera movement could do a lot, but that might be too hard.

I just realised something with the new Dagger translation. Babu Frik expressed understanding after Sith-3P0 recites the translation, then when the gang arrive on Kef Bir / Endor and meet Jannah, she says they got a message from Babu Frik saying they were coming. This is what prompts them to trust each other at their initial meeting.

But we’re changing it so the translation doesn’t say “go to this planet,” it explains how the Dagger works. Rey doesn’t reveal that they’re going to Endor until they’re on the Falcon. So how does Babu Frik know to send a message to Endor that Jannah receives?

Excellent point! We might have to retain the location aspect but could still imply the dagger can mystically guide you.

I really like what we’ve done so far with tying it to Rey’s arc, so perhaps there’s a way of altering the Jannah conversation instead. I don’t have any ideas, but here’s the relevant section of the script:

JANNAH: Rough landing.
POE: I’ve seen worse.
JANNAH: I’ve seen better. Are you Resistance?
POE: That depends.
JANNAH: We picked up a transmission from someone named Babu Frik.
C-3PO: Babu Frik? Oh, he’s one of my oldest friends.
JANNAH: He said you’d come. He said you were the last hope.
REY: We have to get to that wreck. There is something inside there we need.

Edit: I had a semi-related thought. I don’t know how well it would translate to the screen, but in my novel fanedit, I’ve implied that the Sith whispers are charting Rey’s course through the rough seas to the Death Star, which is why she’s able to traverse the impossible-looking waves.

I meant have 3PO’s Sith speech still give that implication while still saying “it’s on Endor duh-errrrr.”

That is why something simple would be best like everything else in this movie. A clear enough message to tell that the Wayfinder is on Endor AND a setup that Rey needs to use the dagger to let it guide her.

“The path to rebirth begins where our Emperor died. Embrace the darkness within. Only this blade tells. Let it guide you.”

This is the way.

Been away for a bit and got caught up a bit. Ah yes, both Burbin and Captainfaraday brought up those important points about the dagger. A house of cards in deed Jar Jar.

So, the one simple answer is to unfortunately have the dagger specify Endor, but it would certainly remove the idea of the dagger being ancient, which then gets us back to the way it is from the start.

However, to still try to keep the idea of it being ancient, I dunno if your view on this has changed now Hal about having a chosen one/prophesy angle on it, but here is my thought now tying it both these points with Lando (Orchi has a clue on him about the Wayfinder) and the comment about Frik.

The blade can be viewed as something ancient if it does indeed have a “sith prophecy” like the Jedi had about a Chosen One in the PT (that in turn affected the OT, technically speaking)

So the Dagger can have an inscription about “the one to take the throne … Where the Emperor/Sith have fallen … the blade will guide to the Wayfinder.” Again, just something on those lines and can have more specifics since it is a “prophetic” ancient dagger. Something kind of “big deal” like the Chosen One prophecy was a “big deal” to the Jedi. So it could connect with some verbage based on part of Palp’s speech later, or even some of the wording on the “broadcast” people like. I dunno, something like that.

Also, since Hal removed Palp’s explicit intentions with Palpy and Rey (Not saying it was to kill or not, or however) but this could be implied now that Palps sent Orchi, with the Dagger, to see if Rey is either chosen or whatever by the dagger.

People know where the battle of the DSII was and where he “died,” so Frik would have contacted Jannah and them about their arrival.

Again, just initial thoughts and will need to ponder longer.

Personally, I still really dislike the idea of a prophecy/chosen one angle for the film. Like I’ve said before in the thread, I don’t like how Rey is special because she’s a Palpatine, and how she’s doubly-special as part of a mythical Force Dyad™; if she’s triply-special because she’s a Chosen One, I may just lose it haha. (Plus, we’d have to rework it again anyway for the Rey Nobody version; so I think we should just come up with one plot thread that can be used in both edits.)

There’s also a problem with that structurally: We’d be trying to introduce a legendary, galaxy-defining prophecy in the eleventh hour of the entire trilogy, let alone the saga. It would have to be set up, explained, and resolved, all in an hour or so. Aside from the massive disconnect it would add in regards to the previous two movies, it would just be unsatisfying storytelling, imo. I see what you’re going for, jarbear; but I have a lot of misgivings about it.

I actually don’t think we need to specify Endor for Jannah to make sense:

JANNAH: Rough landing.
POE: I’ve seen worse.
JANNAH: I’ve seen better. Are you Resistance?
POE: That depends.
JANNAH: We picked up a transmission from someone named Babu Frik.
C-3PO: Babu Frik? Oh, he’s one of my oldest friends.
JANNAH: He said you’d come. He said you were the last hope.
REY: We have to get to that wreck. There is something inside there we need.

We could just recut it to:

JANNAH: Rough landing.
POE: I’ve seen worse.
JANNAH: I’ve seen better.
REY: We have to get to that wreck. There is something inside there we need.

If we really wanted, maybe we could add in a line from someone saying “We’re with the Resistance.” But I think it actually makes more sense if neither side identifies their political affiliations to strangers they’ve just met, brandishing weapons, in the middle of a war, the dumb f*cks.

Maybe we could smooth over the cut with Rey saying something like “Stop, please, we have to get to that wreck”?

I mean, let’s be honest, it’s stupid as hell anyway. Babu decides to send a (apparently non-encrypted) transmission to Ewok Moon, on the off chance that there will just happen to be people there (not just on Endor in general, but within spitting distance of the Death Star II), that those people will be sided against the First Order, and that they’ll want to help the heroes. God, I hope there aren’t any stormtroopers or Sith Cultists or Imperial supporters or bounty hunters or assassins or scavengers at this location that’s apparently still rife with Imperial technology and Voodoo Sith artifacts. Can you imagine random people scavenging Imperial relics?? Unthinkable.

Obviously Babu and Jannah have no prior association. “from someone named Babu Frik.” Babu’s on the black market, and presumably operates in secret. Why would he send a transmission??

Like, God, what was he thinking? Actually though, what was he thinking? Can we cut that out of the film regardless of its implications on the Dagger™ plotline?

Does anyone have a comparison between the original color grading of the film and the LUT version? I had one from this thread bookmarked for awhile and now when I try to access it it says

@sherlock I get that and don’t disagree with that assessment about it, no worries here with my initial thought.

You also bring up a good point about Frick and Jannah. When you think about it … why did Babu contact them? Do they know them? Doesn’t Babu only deal with the crew? Is Jannah and them part of the crew? Why would they know each other?

Just cutting out that works fine as Sherlock’s recut.

We get the whole “why trust each other” later with Fin and Jannah’s scene … so that covers that.

I love that 3PO line though haha.

I think Sherlock understands the circumstance correctly though, jarbear. He didn’t send the message to them specifically. It’s actually a message that he sent to the Endor system for anyone to be able to pick up on the off chance that somebody could help them out. Of course, I can see why that would potentially endanger the very people he’s trying to help.

I don’t really care about it all that much, personally.

Oh yeah, I am sorry, I did miss that completely, thanks Jar Jar.

That does even further give a good reason to remove it since … why send a … erm, public broadcasted message out about a group going to Point A (Endor) to essentially try to “save the day.” I don’t think they would want any FO people to pick it up, or even sympathizers for them too to get a hold of it.

SO yeah …

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

Lol, I’m glad people beat me to mentioning how random it is for Babu to send a message about the “last hope”.

I think mentioning it being on Endor defeats the purpose of it being an ancient dagger. If we don’t change the Babu Frik mention, I would probably drop these changes entirely. Unless you wanted to somehow make it clearer that Ochi made the dagger, or inscribed on it himself.

If you were to cut out those Jannah lines, perhaps you could cut it in a way as if there is a pause, a little bit of tension, but then Rey says what she says with the hope that being honest will be seen as a sign of trust. You could to the shot of the random guy, making us wait for their response, and then Jannah says they can take them there by water. Maybe you could replace 3PO’s line with something else too.

I think Rogue is on to something for the scene as well, if you remove the Babu Frik comment, it can work.
