Just thinking out loud here. The only problem I have with the dyad this is that without any explanation I am left to assume it’s basically what we’ve seen and heard about Kylo Ren and Rey’s connection from the previous two movies.

“There’s been an awakening… the dark side, and the light.”

“Darkness rises, and light to meet it. I warned my young apprentice that as he grew stronger his equal in the light wound rise.”

And especially given that we’re effectively told that for all practical purposes Snoke really does equal Palpatine, it seems baffling that the former is totally unfazed by this but for Palpatine it is an unforeseen (and hugely lucky) surprise.

It’s like “well yeah they’re a dyad. Snoke’s been saying that since the 2014 Thanksgiving TFA teaser trailer.” It’d be different if perhaps he reacted with “wow since dyads are so rare I didn’t know they could do THIS! AHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA”

It’s just so silly! Other than that single, dumb moment it’d be easy to fix. Just lop off part of Kylo’s sentence. “My mother was the daughter of Vader, your father was the son of the Emperor. [What Palpatine doesn’t know is] we’re a dyad in the Force, Rey. Two that are one.”

How would it go to just lop off the only other mention of it?
“Stand together, die together!” (Gonna kill these fools) “Ack. The life force of your bond… [A dyad in the Force]. A power like life itself, unseen for generations.”

It’d be a little destructive, but ya wish it could work this way. Now I understand why they employ the story group full time, to spin this stuff to make sense.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

And to answer the question posed while I was typing, I don’t think that added line is a problem given the mask. I don’t think I’d ever have noticed anything if it wasn’t in the spotlight as an added line. I love that poppasketti augmented it with consonants from real Kylo dialogue.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I’m unsure whether the darkness rises and light to meet it line is referencing the dyad. Mostly because Snoke thought Kylo’s equal was Luke at first, and he would have no reason to suspect they were a dyad.

Also, the whole “there has been an awakening” is probably not a reference to the dyad either. I believe that is more a reference to the will of the force being put into motion, which all starts with Luke’s map ending up with Rey.

By the way, if you wanted to go that route with Palpatine I would recommend the line “Your coming together will be your undoing” from one of the TROS trailers.

But then the problem becomes this: why wasn’t his original plan just to have Kylo bring Rey to him? Surely he would realize the potential exploits of a dyad. Your changes suggest he is aware they are a dyad… only to discover they are a SUPER dyad. Not sure I like that tbh.

Personally, one of my (many) dislikes from TLJ was Snoke’s line about “Light meets dark … Kylo find his match, yada yada” is it completely notifies the PT.

Essentially, he’s implying "For each dark side/light side user, the light side/dark side user will match it.

How many Sith were there during the PT? How many Jedi?

I really, REALLY hated that.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

I think Palpatine preferred just taking a new host, whether it be Rey and Kylo. He asked Kylo to kill her, and he figured whoever survived the encounter would be the most worthy host.

I guess the Dyad thing doesn’t necessarily equate to the rising and falling of the dark side and the light that we see personified by the Jedi Order, then Vader/Palpatine, then Luke, then Kylo, then Rey. Somehow, Kylo realized they were a Dyad offscreen at some point independent of Snoke, and Palpatine didn’t realize their connection was a “Dyad”-level connection until they were together.

It’s just dumb because the Dyad is never really explained outside of what Palpatine says at the very end of the film. We don’t even learn how Kylo knows they’re a dyad. I would almost suggest cutting the term to just not add to the confusion, but I feel like that specialness is necessary to explain how Palpatine can just drink Rey and Kylo’s Dyad Milkshake and get that Sith sugar rush.

Jarbear, I didn’t really take it as one bad guy rises, another good guy rises. I just took it as an interpretation of the way peace and conflict wane and wax naturally overtime. Darkness rises, and light to meet it.

Still stand by this ^

Also RogueLeader, I think I’d probably just shut off the movie if I found out that the mind link (emphasis on mind) created by Snoke survived his death and literally allowed them to transfer a freaking lightsaber across that distance. Imo the dyad, even if it isn’t explained properly, is absolutely necessary.

I would like an opinion - does poppa’s added in line feel natural to the rest of you? It’s the “you were right” line.

I only ask because I know what line was changed, and as a result I always am anticipating the subtle differences. Maybe it sounds just fine and I’m imagining it.

I feel like this is an important thing to discuss if we’re going to try the same thing again with another line.

I agree, the you were right line stands out yes but it was still done so well by poppasketti. It’s very difficult to blend two completely different voice actors as the same character in the same scene with a different sfx chain. He cleverly spliced in pieces of Driver’s voice along with his own. So it’s a matter of how important is the change versus it not matching 100%. My preference would be no V.O. from a different voice actor because for me it’s always very noticeable. This is noticeable but it’s still very acceptable.

From what I remember, the line is very punchy maybe with a lot of brickwall limiting and in your face with a little extra sfx applied to help cover up the different voice.

heil palpatine.

Believe me, I notice it! I don’t know if it needs an EQ tweak or something else, but I remember after spinning my wheels on it for many hours I realized it was about as good as it was going to get.

I don’t know that trying it again (with “become”) would be a great idea though, since it’s hard to really nail it.

I would like to offer to try, but much of my free time is spent just trying to keep up with this thread!

Having said that, I was able to take a stab at the puppet show shot clean plate thanks to the kindness of MR sharing the clip with me.

It’s not perfect, and you can definitely see the seams, but I think if you add the new puppets it should cover up pretty well. I can also provide a tracked foreground plate of the stage so you can place the puppets behind it.

I’m kind of leaning towards Hal and RogueLeader here. If we just ignore the specific term “Dyad,” the whole thing becomes a lot less confusing. We know that they have a bond, and that it’s super-powerful anyway, given how they can transfer objects between themselves; so it’s not wholly unbelievable that Palpy could harness that power for himself. How much does it add to the film to say, “This is because ‘Dyad.’ Buy the TROS Visual Dictionary to find out more about ‘Dyad’!”

That being said, here’s my stab at “becoming” a Dyad. I kinda don’t want to use it now lol; but in the interest of fair play, I’ll offer it as a suggestion: https://streamable.com/uorkfi

(Also, which line are we talking about by poppasketti?)

And Jar Jar - we already knew that their bond survived after Snoke’s death. At the end of TLJ, there’s that moment when Kylo looks up, and “sees” Rey entering the Falcon. And then she shuts the door in his face both figuratively and literally.

EDIT: We see in TLJ (before ‘Dyad’ was a thing) that their connection was ongoing, and that it could transfer matter between locations (the raindrops). Expanding on the Rey/Kylo connection was one of the few bits of connective tissue that J.J. tried to incorporate from TLJ, and it honestly works really well…until he felt the need to re-contextualize the whole concept under an arbitrary title.

I wish they went with the idea that the “Dyad” in specific is why Kylo and Rey can transfer their force energy to each other. I wish Baby Yoda couldn’t randomly do it (they did that to ease into the sudden ability in the TROS, which came out a couple days after the episode.) I kinda wish Rey couldn’t even heal the snake. All of this would more aptly clear up the confusion of why no one’s used this healing ability before, and it would solidify how powerful and purposeful a “Dyad” is.

Impressive, most impressive.
Fantastic work as always Poppasketti!
You say it’s not perfect, but I honestly cannot see a single thing wrong with what you’ve got there. I reckon that since the cloth material is rippling so much, it kinda hides any potential roughness to the removal.

The changes to make this film more consistent with TLJ are so great. Going to the extent of making a whole new puppet show depicting the Battle of Crait isn’t just ambitious, it’s genius. It’s just making me bite my friggin’ nails since the progress on “Rey nobody” seems to be halted, when overwriting that was the worst thing about TROS for me.

Probably not one for Hal because he’s adhering more closely to canon, but, what would be the impact of removing the dyad altogether? They have a strong force bond, buy does it need to be an Official Thing™?

I like the “becoming” a dyad idea. It feels more romantic to me that this power is something born out of their organically-developed connection, rather than the original implication, which seems to be the opposite, that they’re drawn to one another because the Force decided to make them a dyad (presumably whenever Rey was born?). This is probably because I do admittedly prefer heroes with self-determination rather than set destinies.

However, the Rise of Kylo Ren comic has Rey feel Kylo’s fall to the dark side before they ever meet, which does somewhat firmly establish the idea that they were predestined soulmates (guess the Force just sets up arranged marriages).

Wow, poppasketti, that looks amazing!

Sherlockpotter, your mock-up of that line isn’t too bad, but I don’t think we’ve got the raw material for stitching it together. It’s all right, though.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Kylo already defines dyad in the movie. Two that are one. And when Palpatine is healed it instantly and clearly expands that definition.

heil palpatine.

I’m just going to say it if it wasn’t already clear before, removing the dyad from this movie would be crossing a line for me that I wouldn’t feel even remotely comfortable with.

I don’t know how easy it would be to add that stuff back in if it were removed, but hopefully it wouldn’t be too bad.

@poppa it looks pretty good, I do see the seems. However, putting a “walker” puppet over that one spot will cover it on the left side-ish I notice.

As for the dyad thing, anything that implies they were NOT this Dyad thing … or connected in some way at the time of TFA would be a big no for me. (it helps explain Rey’s "instant level up/download Kylo’s TRAINED abilities)

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

That’s fair, Hal. I can work on it some more, see if it can be cleaned up at all. Although like I said, now I’m wondering if it wouldn’t just be easier and more logically consistent to cut the term entirely, like Eddie said.

I don’t want to remove the dyad, but I’d prefer to change the line to “we’ve become a dyad” if it can sound seamless. Which I doubt. So if not it’ll just be left as is.
