TL;DR version of this conversation: Most characters in Star Wars have Stockholm syndrome. Luke and his father. Rey and Kylo. Etc.

Their romantic relationship in TFA gives me the vibes of “predatory guy eventually may weaken female until she falls for him” but she resists and kicks his ass, while at the same time maybe “protesting too much.”

In TLJ Rey’s passionate hatred gives way to compassion and a naïve sense of being able to fix him while Kylo feels like he can pursue his deep, needy desires for her through manipulation. They each make themselves vulnerable to the other before Rey rejects his hand.

In TROS they each redouble their outer shells to protect their vulnerability and feelings for the other, fighting and fighting until they eventually give in.

Meanwhile Finn keeps hitting his head against a brick wall with Rey, pushing Rose away in the process. Rose decides to barely exist after this, and another random girl gets Finn on the rebound.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

From this point of view it all makes sense. And I realized that I didn’t understand anything about the sequel trilogy.

Chewies medal is explained because Leia is holding it as she dies in this edit. Therefore, it represents both Leia and Han for him (the medal belonged to Han originally)

I get that she’s holding it in a few frames, but…so what? Han didn’t care about the medal; no one cared after they were handed out - they were never seen or mentioned again. Chewie hasn’t been moaning this entire time about being left out. Chewie didn’t care about the medal, Han didn’t care about the medal. Why would the audience? (Outside of the fact that “How could Leia forget Chewie?! He was sitting in the Falcon when Han flew it back to the Death Star!”)

If they wanted to give Chewie something to remember Han by, how about Han’s blaster? How about the dice? How about giving him the Falcon instead of Rey? Heck, the Falcon was where Han and Leia first kissed, so it “represents both Leia and Han” too. Give Chewie something that represents him and Han and their relationship; or at least something that the audience is emotionally invested in.

It was lazy fan service in a movie that was already overstuffed with it.

Personally, I always saw that as “schoolyard bully trying to pick on another kid, but underestimates how tough they are.”

In TLJ Rey’s passionate hatred gives way to compassion and a naïve sense of being able to fix him while Kylo feels like he can pursue his deep, needy desires for her through manipulation. They each make themselves vulnerable to the other before Rey rejects his hand.

My read on that wasn’t that they were romantically interested in one another. I saw it as Rey felt abandoned by her parents; Kylo felt abandoned by his. Luke failed them both. It was two people feeling completely alone, bonding with someone who had had a similar experience. Honestly, I didn’t interpret their emotional states as even being capable of romance at that point, let alone of feeling romantically towards one another.

In TROS they each redouble their outer shells to protect their vulnerability and feelings for the other, fighting and fighting until they eventually give in.

I just thought that was them still wanting to be friends, but not thinking the other person would ever see their perspective. “If you’re not with me, you’re my enemy.”

And then they kissed.

I’m definitely not saying your interpretation was wrong, but hopefully you can see why other people were a bit blindsided by them kissing in the end. I do agree that romance has always been in the fabric of Star Wars, right down to John Williams’s lush, romantic score. I just don’t think it was developed at all in the Sequels, or at least, not developed very clearly.

And I’d probably interpret it different if it wasn’t taking place in an archetype-heavy melodrama, to be fair.

The good news is that it is most likely a pretty easy thing to remove if you don’t like it. I have an edit of poppa’s TLJ that removed a bunch of small things I didn’t like about TLJ.

Year or so later son decides that his father is actually a great guy deep inside.”

Sorry, couldn’t help myself haha

The difference is that one person believes that there still exists humanity in this damaged shell of a man, the other seems to think this is prime boyfriend material.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Melodrama?

-Farm kid rescues princess from Space-Nazis and blows up their moon-sized superlaser.
-Farm kid is actually the son of Space Himmler
-Princess is farm kid’s long-lost twin sister, separated at birth.
-Space Himmler is actually a prophesied Jesus-figure destined to save the galaxy
-Space Himmler kills Space Hitler to save his son
-Space Himmler succumbs to a forbidden love with a former queen

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Yeah I purposely exaggerated the details in that post. Was mostly pointing out that it really depends on how you frame these things.

It’s also worth pointing out that Luke wanted Vader to come back with him, which indicates that he sees him as prime father material now that he has redeemed himself.

Speaking of making their romance more explicit, it does remind me of a test clip that I found on my laptop that I totally forgot I made. https://streamable.com/pwg1wp

I really like this rescore. The fact that is the B melody of the Across the Stars, the one associated with the concealed, forbidden and tragic nature of the relationship, is brilliant.

Thanks! I would like to go through the AOTC soundtrack and see how many versions of the B melody exist. Perhaps it could be placed in one or two of their other scenes too.

I agree that the shot of the castle could use something more to feel integrated into the rest of the scene. I think some trees would certainly help. I also think it might make sense for the lava flow to be dried up and the castle more ruinous if possible.

Yes I think there was some talk about how it’d look more legit if the lights were turned off as it were in Vader’s castle. As well there’s probably some potential for more changes in the other shots - adding lava flow to the tree shot and some of the shots with Kylo, darkening the ground that Kylo’s on. Just ways to tie it all together. Beyond my abilities of course.

Re: the saber effects, are the shots that kewlfish made available or are we still waiting on that?

I almost spat out my coffee laughing at that comment! Hahah!

Anyway, not going to keep going with that topic, and I appreciate people giving their own views on it, being ok with it or not without having to accuse people of being this or that. Love it, thanks all!

As for the Castle shot, although I am still not a huge fan of the “Mustafar Minute,” but if the castle can be implemented and help blend in more trees and “lights off” at the castle shot and more lava/fire in the tree areas … it would really help sell that to me.

Great start with it, wow.

I wish I had some skill to help out, but that is starting to sell if for me. The color change of the castle shot blends in pretty dang well. If a hard core skilled editor can make those last bit of adjustments. (Lights off, maybe make the castle SLIGHTLY in ruins) and add some lava fields or something to the tree shot … that would do it.

Great work everybody.

I prefer that version too. It might be worth a try to use the prologue track John Williams composed for the scene where Kylo Ren meets the Oracle for those two establishing shots. It could branch off to Ren’s theme pretty well.
