Definitely a possibility, but the transition from TLJ and TRoS with Palpatine and Snoke being linked is super muddled. We really don’t know what their relationship was like and how much control Palpatine had over Snoke. Whether Snoke was more of an apprentice or a “meat puppet”. Either way, I don’t want to get far off topic when it comes to this fanedit.

However, it is something that still bothers me. If Hal would like to change the line to “I trained Snoke” then I would be happy. Although, I don’t need to die on that hill. “I made Snoke” is fine I suppose now that his vat of clones is removed as it can apply a multitude of different interpretations. I’ll just stick with my head canon of Snoke being a placeholder apprentice for Palpatine until he could sink his claws into Kylo or Rey.

I don’t really want to change this about the original. My understanding from TROS is that Snoke was a meat puppet, possibly literally housing Palpatine’s spirit before he went into a clone body sometime between TLJ and TROS. One thing about this that gives me pause is that Snoke seemed to recognize that Rey and Ben are linked. But I guess them being a dyad is some weird technicality aside from this.

Also, if Palpatine’s spirit was in Snoke, why didn’t his spirit pass into Kylo Ren when he killed him?

So… essentially Palpatine is now like Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter, where he transferred his spirit into different bodies to keep himself alive or to perform an action that he could not at the current state?

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

I don’t know Harry Potter, but I guess so.

I just looked into the “”official”” explanation for Snoke, and I guess he is supposed to be his own separate, real person. Removing the vat of pickled Snokes helps make this interpretation more plausible than the theatrical. And I guess Snoke knew they were a dyad but never told Palpatine.

So, eh, I’m fine with leaving this aspect alone other than removing the Snoke vat. Make of it what you will.

“Made” is a very vague word. “Made” in the canon sense means that Palpatine created Snoke in a test tube, but it can also mean “trained and placed him in his seat of power,” as in “I made Snoke [what he is].” Luke could just as easily have said “I created Kylo Ren” in The Last Jedi during the peak of his guilt.

Keeping “made” is the best option, especially since Hal’s edits are typically conservative enough not to break hard canon “from a certain point of view.” I think making Leia’s lightsaber purple will be the most drastic “factually incorrect” thing in all of his edits, and even that will only matter if they make new stories about Leia’s training, since it gets buried in the desert presumably forever at the end of IX.

Just learned that Christopher Sean (the voice actor for Kaz in Resistance) has a Cameo account where you can pay $30 for him to record any video/message. Given that his ship and a few others from the show were created for TROS but unused and the novelization included him along with a line of dialogue, would anyone be interested in group-funding him to record the line for the edit? Inferno Squad was included so I figure there will also be interest in this. The novelization goes:

“Zay Versio with Inferno Squad, standing by. Look at all these ships!”
“Fireball, here. Hi everyone!”
“Cut the chatter, Kaz,” a deep voice responded.

Given how short the line is I’m not sure if enough people would be interested in chipping in a bit so maybe the line could also be spliced together from show dialogue? Along with Yeager’s line in response.

Just want to see Resistance included 😃

Those lines actually were recorded, using impersonators. They were just buried deep in the audio mix to avoid standing out from the rest of the fleet dialogue.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:

It would still be cool to have the actual actor record them.

Really? The only one I’ve noticed standing out was the Inferno Squad one. Are the files available somewhere? I’d like to make Kaz stick out too

Eh, I still prefer predominately fan-made ship names. I don’t think it’d be a great idea to reach out to him for this.

Wait … would nasty butler count as fan made? 😄

I’m just going to add my voice to the “Don’t mess with the original canon lore too much” crowd, as I’d actually like to show this cut to future fans who will ultimately be more satisfied with it as a valid alternative. It’s pretty darn good as it is right now. I’m already sad about the loss of the Episode III line, but I understand why you cut it. Changing the vats of Snoke Clones to Sheev clones is harmless enough as one would expect to see failed Sheev bodies in the same lab somewhere anyway.

Changing Kef Bir to the forest moon is also a small stretch, but I understand why you did it too and it’s easy enough for the casual viewer to overlook. No one who wants to nitpick will care about the color of Leia’s saber, and the purple looks pretty neat.

Outside of those changes, there’s a lot I like about this cut so far. Preserve the lore where you can so I can share it among others without big canon-debates, while only fixing the film’s real problems.

I totally agree with this, it’s one of the reasons I am a bit iffy about the purple lightsaber, as much as I love the idea of honouring Carrie’s wish for Leia’s blade to be purple. Everything else that’s been changed I doubt will ever be touched on again in canon (e.g. Kef Bir)

If you get a copy of any new EU books you can find+replace synonyms for blue for purple, glancing at the context as you go.
This is the sort of detail that just doesn’t matter whether it lines up with other stuff.

+1 I like most changes, but I think I’ll be adding the ROTS line back in and the Kef Bir -> Endor change, while I like it, changes canon too much for me so I’ll reverse it

When something as dumb and egregious as Rey Palpatine is canon, i don’t think it matters anymore.

Author

A hallmark of Star Wars is a constantly changing sense of continuity. There’s nothing smooth about it. The EU are nanobots trying to heal somebody constantly being injured in all manner of ways. You can appreciate the effort and do some of it in your own head, but the ST renewed the franchise’s commitment to never planning ahead and constantly retconning everything.

Mace Windu’s lightsaber was blue until it was purple, too.
