50% deblue with LUT looks fantastic IMO! Also so glad there is a redo of the LUTs! Super excited.

This is the way.

2016 Ghostbusters was… okay. It should have been funnier.

Then again, that goes for Ghostbusters 2, and basically everything ever Ghosbustered since 1984.

…fwiw, last grasp at the straws of a request: I think the best possible opening to Rise of Skywalker is to just cut from the opening crawl to Kylo jumping in to frame in front of the nebula. Excise Mustafar entirely. It’s pointless, confusing, ugly, and mostly meaningless. The jump-in is cleaner, and honestly way more in keeping with Star Wars tradition (pan down to ship on the way to a planet - not to that enemy ship parked over it waiting for a bad and incongruous cut to that planets surface before immediately jumping back into space again)

I understand that people think leaving the Mustafar Minute in has some worth, but I figure since everyone else is asking for under-the-wire changes and additions to this edit, I should go on record one last time as saying this one edit will engender so much more goodwill than any post-production attempts to save the Mustafar Minute without any of the actual meat that segment needs to justify itself (the Oracle, Vader’s Castle). Just start already on the way to Exegol. It’s so much more clean and purposeful from a storytelling AND a filmmaking perspective than throwing more globs of clay at the broken, misshapen vase that is this movie’s ungainly opening on Mustafar.

I also understand this won’t happen, but I figure one last hail mary attempt at getting it out there wouldn’t hurt. 😃

I actually agree. If this sequence is gonna be in this film, it would be great to just start above (below? outside?) Exegol, and get rid of Mustafar and the nebula.

I agree it’s a cool idea and has a lot going for it. I watched the whole opening section that way to try it out and it felt rushed to me. I like the opening “going on a wordless journey” montage aspect of the opening and never had a problem with it. For a movie that often feels breakneck paced, having it open this way is at least something to offset that aspect.

I sincerely applaud this move in another fan edit, but I don’t think it should be this one!

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I watched the whole opening section that way to try it out and it felt rushed to me.

I don’t understand how it could feel rushed when there’s no actual RUSHING happening, as opposed to the Mustafar Minute, which is nothing but 15 bad cuts and a bunch of audio/visual mess shoved inbetween them. The pacing from Kylo jumping into Exegol’s orbit up until the end of that scene with Palpatine is fairly slow and measured. Things are happening, but they’re happening in an orderly, interesting fashion, as opposed to the jumble of disconnected and inarguably confusing images that is the whole of Mustafar - a whole that is ultimately meaningless in the larger storytelling context.

Leaving Mustafar in doesn’t offset TROS’ “breakneck” pace, it contributes to it (it sets the film’s tone, honestly), because it’s a bunch of visual junk “storytelling” with all of the point and purpose cut out of it, happening right up front, for little-to-no narrative return. It’s part of why the movie FEELS breakneck and exhausting overall - because the first thing you’re exposed to is sloppy editing of disjointed imagery going for a couple minutes straight before it actually settles down and STARTS THE STORY on Exegol.

Oh, and one last (Columbo-esque) thing - if we’re still poking around for music changes, I think sticking with Burning Homestead for Rey and the Force Ghosts is a mistake. It doesn’t fit either tonally OR musically (it’s in the wrong key and transitions poorly, just on a technical level) and of all the music choices made, it’s the one that seems the most stereotypically “Fan-edit”-esque. It’s going to the easy fanservice well nakedly, and one time too many. Better NO music for that moment than the second tracked re-usage of Burning Homestead.

I knew your answer already, Hal, yet hearing it again still disappoints. :’( Ah well.

I do think you need to let it go though, Broom Kid. Hal has said time and time and time again that he won’t be cutting Mustafar, and constantly bringing it up when he’s already tested it and didn’t like it and firmly said he won’t be cutting it, isn’t going to do anything but clutter up his thread. That’s why I stopped bringing it up months ago.

Author

Hey, I prefaced it with “Last grasp at straws” and it’s been literally MONTHS since I last brought it up, LOL. The endgame is close and even though it’s likely not going to go our way here, I don’t think there’s any harm to making that last grasp, and I’d hope there’s no hard feelings. I can say there’s no ill will intended on my part, and I’m not going to be mad if the hail mary gets deflected out of bounds. I expect it, and I’m still looking forward to sitting down in front of the final product (or one of the versions of the final product, if the Rey Nobody edit is still on its way).

It’s one final bit of feedback before last call, is all. If anything, it says a lot about the amount of work, time, energy, and results that this thread has shown to everyone reading it that of all the changes, cuts, and additions to the movie being made by the fans here, that the only two things that still stand out ot me as “fixable” are those two things. That’s a hell of a better ratio than the ACTUAL RELEASED FILM had. 😃

poppasketti mocked it up once, and it just feels 100% correct, not just for a fan-edit, but for the movie. It’s also a really strong opening shot across the bow so far as the first cut in a fan-edit goes.

its really good, butit doesn’t help or serve any good to the film to open there. shatters the already fragile pacing.

You’re all right, Broom Kid. Doesn’t hurt to reevaluate. But like I said, I don’t want to cut it. I do see both sides and I’m certain someone will make that change in their own version. I can imagine a project of “TROS:A Plus All Those Little Things That People Wanted To See,” or a little more aggressive version. Lol

The music. I also am not a fan of using Burning Homestead for the third time, but we just couldn’t find any other music to fit the moment. Can’t say I’ve tried it without music at all, though. Let me render a test clip and we can see about it.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

It wouldn’t fit. It’s supposed to be a triumphant moment when the Force Ghosts rise up against Palpatine, and a cue originally intended for a battle scene wouldn’t really fit that.

Hal already added a minor repeat of DOTF during Rey and Kylo’s duel, so it isn’t really necessary to play it again.

What about Leia’s Theme? I know Leia isn’t there, but The Empire Strikes Back used Yoda’s theme during action scenes involving Luke to symbolize how he had learned from Yoda, so since Leia taught Rey it might be a cool parallel. Not to mention, Leia’s Theme is one of the best pieces of music ever written.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

Admittedly, if I could get a custom crawl that changes the wording for the last paragraph worded something like “Kylo found the last piece of the puzzle … dark whispers … something something … mysterious planet … yada yada …” I would totally go with the removal of the Mustafar Minute in my own personal edit. But I have no skill. Doh!

Anyway, back to Hal’s edit and the previous conversation of the LUT, I do agree with the 50% deblue version that seems to be the consensus. Seems like the right balance. Now we just need Jonh to correct is priorities and work on this Star Wars Fan edit and give Luke a hair cut! ;P

My only issue with the music right after “I am all the Jedi” is that once that music bit Ends it just repeats slightly slower. It is such recognizable music that it’s impossible to miss

^ It was a little awkward, to hear that iconic thoughtful music and think, “If you just believe, then huge rocks will crush your enemies.”

Personally I don’t think there’s any music that could be more fitting than Burning Homestead for all of the Force ghosts returning in one final climax to help destroy Palpatine. It’s basically the Force theme- the perfect choice!

And while the opening straight to Mustafar is cleaner and paced better, I’d stick with keeping Mustafar. I love the idea of Kylo going there and will take any version of it even if it’s messy

Yeah the Force theme is really overused in the last movie, and I’m pretty sure the version heard when the Sith temple crumbles is the same used for Luke’s death in TLJ.

Maybe some version of Rey’s theme (other than the theatrical) could accompany the Force spirits scene? Perhaps there’s a way to slow down the suite track of Rey’s theme (from TFA) without it sounding artificial?

Another solution (because Burning Homestead admittely sounds epic) could be changing the music that plays over the destruction of the Sith temple - as I said before, it’s already canned music from another movie.

By the way, I rewatched the teaser trailer of TROS a couple days ago and I noticed there´s a slightly extended shot of the group’s arrival on Kijimi. Have you considered using it? (Minor stuff, I know) Other interesting thing I found is that in what seems to be footage from the Battle of Exegol, the atmosphere of Exegol has an orange tonality.

And I support keeping Mustafar in!

^ Good idea. I just rewatched this scene in the workprint and while the music cue is very fitting for the Force ghosts arriving, it’s just tiring/meaningless having it play again right after Palpatine dies.

That’d be a tall order, rebuilding the entire soundtrack for the scene(s).

I feel like someone has tried using Williams’ original cue from “Ways of the Force” from TFA before they replaced it with Burning Homestead in the final film, correct? If it fit, it could be a nice way to use an unused rendition of the Force theme, which feels appropriate to use with the appearance of all the Jedi. Maybe it didn’t fit and that’s why it’s not being considered?

Hal tried it, but it didn’t fit. It just didn’t feel triumphant enough for the final battle of the entire saga.
