Looking great, kewlfish! Especially the shot at 1:09

Yes, I can’t see anything wrong with it at all on my screen, at least not without going frame by frame or anything. The first pass seemed like the pattern on the blade was sort of… uniform, but it looks like you’ve fixed that so I have no complaints.

It seems like Kylo’s saber core was a little thinner but had the crackle effect that makes it look thicker. This saber obviously can’t really be made thinner, so you use a little less of a crackle effect. At least it seems that way.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Yeah, I could use a simple wire remover to try and make the core thinner but it can cause some crazy warping of the environment so I found that it looked better to apply a smaller effect to the normal lightsaber, match the color and go frame by frame to match it to movements of the Skywalker saber.

I think that’ll be more than adequate for purposes of cover artwork. Again, very nicely done.

And, Noah. I like the idea but I’d hate to lose the original score for that scene and moment. I think it’ll be another one on the reject pile. But I’m glad you mocked it up and we had another idea to consider.

It’s not the re-score that’s the main part of the concept, but extending the sequence. The original music can still be used and extended with the extra shots.

Shit, that last pass looks great, kewlfish.

Yeah, not a fan of the music, but I do like the idea of creating a another wide shot to give the moment of Ben’s death some breathing room. I felt like it just went by so fast from it. If we couldn’t find a way to create the necessary elements for the wide, I wonder if we could just extend the moment, like Dom managed to do for Rey vs TIE on Pasaana and Rey on Ahch-To.

Has anyone considered editing the voices Rey hears to only be the Force spirits of Qui-Gon, Kenobi, Yoda, Anakin, and Luke? It’s bothered me since the movie came out that she hears voices of Jedi who weren’t able to preserve themselves after death. Some of the lines play off of each other so there would have to be some workarounds, plus the empty spaces may need to be filled in with other lines from the Force spirit characters. Just a thought, I think it would be worth looking into.

Hey HAL, thanks for reading that over! I did notice the subtle DOTF tune at the beginning of the fight while I watched it and I think it could have worked if it carried through the fight, but since it is only there for 2 sec (or thats just what i heard anyway) and then gone for the whole thing it feels a bit strange to me, like a tease that doesnt have fulfillment. Maybe add it again nearing the end when things are even more intense so it carries more with the scene? Its just a bit confusing right now since it lasts such a short amount of time. Hope that makes sense.

If I may pop in to the current topic, after studying Kylo’s Lightsaber core more, I was wondering if kewlfish you could add a soft blue particle effect around the blade as well almost like a film grain to give it less of a sharp fluctuating edge. Kylos also had a more lightning effect as well but I dont think that needs to be added since this a different crystal and it is cracked differently.

Also glad you went for all crackle over healing HAL, its important to make sure the movie is watchable for normal audiences as well and if our family members dont understand than probably we should dial things back. I think the blade idea is good though, close to that line but good all the same.

Also felt that Ben’s death could have been longer and more impact-full, especially since Rey obviously just admitted her full feelings to him. Of course it would have to look and feel good though. also music change is iffy at best, idea has some merit but, yeah it would need to grow alot.

This is the way.

Here is my second pass… I fixed the masking issues, made the blade a bit more subtle, and fixed the log scene. Some issues that got pointed out where actually issues with the theatrical release (i.e. like a lightsaber tip going through a tree) so there wasn’t much that I was able to do about that, but the footage is moving so quick that you won’t notice it when watching the movie at normal speed.

This export is lower quality as I wanted you all to see if there any noticeable issues before do the final render.

DUDE! That looks AMAZING!!

Love the feathering and glow, great work on the mask around Rey’s arm, etc. I did notice some new weird light reflections on the bottom left of the screen but I’ll make another pass once these downloads and let you know the frames on PM.

Incredible work, mate! Can’t wait to use this 😃

Here’s an idea of the scale I’m working at. The original cover art was only in 72dpi but for print, it really needs to be in 300dpi so that’s why there’s a little quality loss but once it’s scaled-down it will look fine unless you’re going for billboard ads? 😉

I’ve tried to lighten the color around Rey’s ear and hair but that effect is on two different layers so I have to match the color on both to lighten the effects, weirdly I have to use a dark color to brighten it up so it’s tricky. I’m colorblind to most of these colors so if it looks off let me know where and which tones. It’s also in RBG as I wasn’t sure if this was just being used for digital use but will naturally lose so of its brightness when converted to CMYK for print.

For the Bluray cover, I’ll have to shorten the design as I can’t stretch it out due to too many layer variants but I hope this is ok now?

I don’t see anything wrong with that at all.

If there’s a good way to either stay with Rey longer after Ben fades, or some other shot or something to just stew a moment before a happy lalala scene, I’m for it.

I had a fried over for a bit yesterday who is a big SW fan and showed a few clips from the workprint. Fun to see reactions IRL, especially to jonh’s ghost stuff. I told him that even though that clip has made rounds on the internet and is something I had no hand in making, I feel proud knowing it was made originally for this project. Lol

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Nothing like IRL. I’ve really enjoyed doing zoom screenings and getting live feedback.

This forum is by far the best place for encouragement and creativity. You’re doing star wars a great justice, man. Can’t wait to see the next workprint. What’s the eta on it?

Depends how fortunate I am. I’m exporting the raw output now, which I’ll import into FCPX in order to apply LUTs. I may not get as granular with that as the final release, just applying the relevant ones to their portions of the movie broadly. For the final release I’ll want to sit down and go over things more carefully.

So possibly within a few days, but I never know. I just work on this, outside of forum stuff, whenever I have cracks of time.

Yeah, I get that. I’m trying to replace my DVD source with a higher res blu-ray version without buying a blu-ray drive. Noticed there’s so much grain on DVD. Hoping blu-ray is a little cleaner.

Did the Jedi temple scene ever get finished?

Just looking at the Saber exchange and I think the healing idea could work. You can ramp up the crackling sound when it’s virtually silent before and drop it out when Ben has it. It’s very clear visually and auditable at that segment.

I think it’s possible for sure, I personally just like the symbolism and meaning of Ben finally wielding his grandfather’s lightsaber he’s always wanted but with the crackle to show he can’t ignore his sins of the past.

I do still think it’d be cleaner and less iffy to maintain the effect until the end.

This is a great take. Keep the crackle through the whole movie.

After reading everyone’s comments, it appears that Ajan Kloss is in a pretty good spot, I’ll run a final pass on it and make sure there are no underlying issues.

In the time being, here is the first pass for the Pasaana Caverns scene. There are definitely some spots were the overlay is off and some issues that I see, but it is a first pass of course.

Also, Axios, I can definitely try to smooth out the blade some more or try some other stuff and about the blade.
