I bet that guy could produce a fitting piece intended to be overlaid onto the actual scene, but he’d have to do that intentionally, I think.

I’m really okay personally with a music-less duel scene. I’m just planning to do an alternate track because it’s such a popular idea and alternate audio is easy to include. But I don’t like the idea of just tracked music; we would all have roasted them if that’s what they had done. So it’s tricky. But I’ll use tracked music if it’s the best option for an alternate track for those that want it.

Tangential: I don’t plan to add “come home” to Leia’s last words. I can’t help but feel it’s even more of a “cut up bits and pieces of Fischer for TROS.” And it makes it even weirder. Is she saying “come home” to me as I die and take you with me?

DSII Duel using music from Sammuel Kim. Actually seems to fit pretty well:

That fight is not worthy of Duel of the fates feels very out of place, just gonna be honest.

I always thought Battle of Heroes works better here… although I think that someone made a custom song out of Kylo and Rey’s themes, likes pages and pages ago… it was a pretty neat concept too

Compared to Duel of the Fates, Battle of the Heroes suits the fight better in terms of pacing and emotion, but I believe it’s too linked to Anakin and Obi-Wan’s fight. There’s a combined Battle of the Heroes and DOTF track made by Samuel Kim which I placed over the duel once out of curiosity. It would fit pretty well if it weren’t for the fact it doesn’t resemble John Williams very much.

But I really think DOTF should be in this movie in some way, mostly because I’m still bitter that Lucasfilm used the theme to promote this movie but wasn’t in the actual cut. But it also would be a nice nod to the scrapped Episode 9 script of the same name.

Maybe we can get some sound bites in throughout the film/edit

very short cues to some of the themes like duel of the fates

I know a composer and I’ll ask him to experiment

I agree the line about Leia knowing Rey was a Palpatine all along should be removed, leaving it just creates more questions than answers. How long did they know? Why did neither of them told her? This is never adressed further.

When I [and I assume, many others] watched it at the theater I took it as both Luke and Leia knowing from the very beginning, and both keeping it secret from her (much like how Obi-Wan & Yoda hide Vader’s true identity from Luke). This would mean Luke was just pretending not to know who she is on TLJ, ruining what’s imo the best part of that movie.

I have 0 editing experience, but I made a mockup to show how the scene could work:

pw:fanedit

I think it flows well. Rey’s expresion after Luke says “Because you’re a Palpatine” could be interpreted as her feeling sad/ashamed/scared that Luke knows her identity. By removing those lines it seems like Luke has just found out alongside Rey, and he shows how much he’s grown since TLJ by staying calm and trusting Rey, whereas in TLJ he is startled and flees after she fails her first lesson.

That’s really not bad. And you’re absolutely right, it shows Luke back in his right mind taking what the Force throws at him. I guess maybe in this version Leia may not have known at all. And, hey, why would she?

You’ve all given me a hell of a lot of feedback on day 1 of the first workprint. I thank you.

I’ve just updated the OP with my intentions at this point in time and the status of each.

If anyone is interested in Muffy’s idea of making it appear that Kylo is farther away from Rey as they fight over the Chewie shuttle, feel free to give it a shot. I didn’t put it on my list, though.

Thank you! 😃 I’m glad to help out. And yeah, they don’t adress HOW Leia knew either.

I loved the workprint so far btw. Fantastic work from everyone!

If we remove Leia knowing than it would likely be best to also remove her line to Rey of “Rey, never be afraid of who you are.”

This is the way.

  • 00:45:39 Zorii telling Poe “I want to see your brains in the snow”
Doesn’t sound like what a StarWars character would say. dropping that line leaving her slight nod to Poe holding a gun to his head would be a much better effect.

Darth Muffy several of your suggestions I had implemented, and I’m sure others will. And the above two ideas are quite good. I just implemented both of them.
Kylo would have had to jump out before the explosion and that’s a bit ridiculous. So I cut it.
Also the brains in the snow bit is too much. I cut that as well. It was simple and only required muting the center channel and blending into and out of the muted part. Thank you!

Anyone know where to find some good Sith whispers? Or maybe Palpatine can continually chant “find me.”

You could pull the Sith followers chanting though it’s not whispers.

Leia was well handled especially being that she is dead.

was the best they could do if you ask me.

Just a concept so not high quality, but.

tried adding Jedi Purge theme from Revenge Of The Sith to Palpatine’s chain lighting on fleet, idea I got from a friend.

I LOVED THAT
it is a direct throwback to order 66 and is imediatly followed by the “revenge of the jedi” on Palpatine. It’s like poetry, they rhyme

the dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural

I like the idea of removing Leia knowing Rey’s heritage, given that there’s no way she would know unless it’s another one of her weird “Somehow I’ve always known” moments which just raises more questions about why she did absolutely nothing with this information.

I don’t, however, like the idea of cutting “two were made” since it’s not exposition, it’s calling back to Lando’s line and reminding the audience that while the audience knew the Wayfinder was right there, Rey didn’t. Further, I think culling the Dyad lines would hurt the movie quite a bit; if anything, that concept needed to be expanded more on. I don’t think cutting it altogether is the solution, though. The uniqueness of their bond as a Dyad is what leads to Palpatine ditching his plan of converting either of them, and is also what allows Ben to bring Rey back from death. Without that, the force healing becomes even more convoluted and contradictory and raises all kinds of questions about all kinds of previous moments in the saga. Exposition is not always a bad thing, and an aversion to it hurts the final product just as much as an overreliance. This film explains so few things as it is.

Disagree, I think it still works in a general sense. She doesn’t have to literally mean “because you’re a Palpatine.”

Hal, I get what you’re saying about having Leia say “come home”, but as it stands it still just feels like it’s not super clear what she’s actually doing? It almost feels like she’s distracting him so Rey can get her swipe in. At least having her say “come home” would somewhat clear up her intentions and dovetail nicely with Han’s statements e.g. “she’s gone, but what she fought for isn’t” etc. (Also, if we see his ghost in the end, he has “come home” to her)

Some other notes from watching the workprint:

  • I definitely think Klaud has to go, because he feels like a random presence without his introduction

  • The transition from the Falcon jumping into hyperspace to Rey meditating feels pretty fast. I wonder if it would be possible to add an establishing shot of the jungle? This movie lacks establishing shots in general

  • I think the lightspeed skipping mentions have to be cut around. I can’t watch that sequence without wondering what they’re talking about.

  • The continuity error of Rey having the saber on her belt bugs me every time I see it now

  • C3PO’s “in the event that I do not return, I want you to know that you are my best friend” feels like really clumsy foreshadowing. I wonder if you could just cut the “In the event I do not return” out?

  • I’m okay with you keeping the thing Finn wanted to tell Rey but I wish we could do something to make his Force sensitivity more obvious. Maybe add a quick flash of Kylo in his TIE when he senses his presence? Add cross dissolves when he senses Rey’s death?

  • I think you should consider using some of the Knights of Ren dialogue that was created in another thread. Anything to give them more of a presence/personality would be appreciated.

  • There’s a scene of Ren force-skyping with the emperor that feels super brief and abrupt. This is right before the gang discuss their next steps on Ochi’s ship. Not sure if there is some way to extend, move or even cut the scene to improve pacing.

  • I can’t wait for the Rey nobody version.

I agree with pretty much everything Octorox suggested, as well.

Several pages back someone suggested reordering it so that Rey’s training scene happens right after the “who is she?” with Palpatine, then the Falcon scene happens after Billie Lourd tells Leia the Falcon still isn’t back, then back to Ajan Kloss after breaking through the ice wall and proceeding as normal.

I really like that idea as well, since it gives us a path to follow through the characters’ dialogue, and helps to ease the pacing a bit more. Is that something you’d be willing to consider?

I like that in theory. I think Dominic was trying that approach?

Does anybody else find it odd that Luke’s hair blows in the wind? He is a ghost after all.

Exactly! If Leia knew Palpatine had offspring it’s hard to believe it wouldn’t raise a flag.
"Hey… wait a minute, It all makes sense now! Palpatine’s behind it all!”
