Anything to lessen or remove the lightspeed skipping would be a plus. It’s the most patently absurd part of the movie, and that’s saying something.

Agree. But only because Poe keeps doing it over and over. Does he want to die? One skip should be enough to lose the tie fighters who will all kill themselves if they attempt the ill advised stunt. Plus there’s that ridiculous talking tree alien in the last skip who should be cut anyway.

Here’s a bone headed idea. Obviously the crawl would have to be different and not reveal Palpatines survival, but… and hear me out.

We open up on the Falcon in flight to get information from Boolio, that whole scene plays out. Then we move to Rey training and that whole scene plays out and the change comes when Kylo is reaching out to her in the force.

Kylo reaches out and we get all of the flashes with some added TLJ Luke in there, then it smooths out and we see an editing version of Kylo’s excursion to Exegol. This way the reveal is for later in the film, but we still get to see it right before Poe informs the Resistence.

It makes sense also for Kylo to flash images of the Emporer to Rey since he is trying his best to manipulate her to the best of his ability, doing this would set her on edge at an earlier point.

I just like the idea of opening up on the Falcon too

Not a bone headed idea at all! This same idea is something I’ve been thinking about a lot over the past several days. Structurally, I think the film is poorly served by the reveal of Palpatine right at the top of the film. I agree with you that that reveal, along with his fleet of ships, should come later. My ideal would be that it comes after they find the dagger on desert party planet (forgive me, I’m totally blanking on the proper name at the moment), making the initial chase for the wayfinders and the true stakes not really hitting until after, making it all the more important to actually translate the dagger and find the wayfinder. I’m still thinking about how this would work exactly, it would likely involve new dialog for masked Kylo…but then, I’m becoming more and more convinced that the mask on/off decisions in this film are designed to do exactly what I’m suggesting, plug in the necessary dialog depending on where that scene ends up in the cut.

On the subject of Lightspeed Skipping, it’s my opinion that the spy rendevous and chase opening can be cut entirely. There is nothing that happens or is said in that scene that isn’t covered again later. The spy is mentioned multiple times after, making it unnecessary to actually see him. And the lightspeed skipping is referenced later only to instigate the conflict between Rey and Poe, and if one desired to keep it for a fanedit, the simple reference to it serves just as well without having to see it in action. One possible wrinkle is in not getting the visual cue ahead of time when the spy head is tossed on the table by Kylo. But for my money, and since that alien spy character is not even a character I have any investment in, the intention in that scene can play just as well selling the simple idea that “we kill spies here”. We didn’t have to see any Bothans to get that “many Bothans died”.

Are you planning on doing the edit in 4k? It’s actually really easy to rip 4k blu-rays, you just need a “uhd friendly” drive, modified firmware and makemkv.

And no, none of my edits will ever surpass 1080p BluRay spec for a host of reasons.

If anyone would ever like to attempt it, feel free to lay my lossless audio output and a proxy rip of the video streams into an editor and recreate the video in 4K or whatever. But I cannot, due to technical limitations and much of the source material being sourced from 1080p and 480p. The entire saga is being mastered at 1080p with 5.1 DTS and that’s as far as I can take things.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Sorry if any of these have been said already but here’s a few suggestions:

  • I think it’d be a good idea to remove any of Finn, Poe or Reys references to Finn’s ‘I never got the chance to tell you’ line from the sinking pits. It’s never resolved, which seems like a complete oversight from the production team, so might as well be removed unless there’s a deleted scene that gives it some resolution
  • If there’s any way possible to edit around Palpatines ridiculous force lightning into the sky moment, you could try that. It just feels so inconsistent with the force as its been presented up to this point
  • Removing Maz Kanatas moment where she basically says Leia’s about to die before reaching Ben through the force, it’s unnecessary
  • Remove Lando and Jannahs odd moment
  • To be honest, I’d remove Finn and Jannah’s conversation about her platoons mutiny. This film is so rushed, and with so little time to deal with existing characters, and the fact that Jannah just appeared like 5 seconds ago, it’s impossible to care about her story/character, so it doesn’t add very much
  • Include more Rose in the film if deleted footage is available. I’m no big fan of Rose, but she was a main part of this group and should have had a bigger role, rather than introducing new characters who basically took her place
  • Removing the image of Snoke clones in a giant tank, which leaves the ‘I made Snoke’ more open to interpretation
  • Generally, I forget them all, but there were so many slight moments here and there that seem like a middle finger to Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi. Where possible try and keep these to a minimum, for the sake of consistency across the trilogy
  • I think one of the most important things is the pacing. Adding breathing room, silence in scenes, letting scenes last a little longer wherever possible.

I think there’s actually a lot of good content to work with in Episode 9, its just brought down by all of the bad

How about moving the opening of TROS to the opening of TLJ?
This changes Kylo Ren’s motivation throughout the movie and, adding the failed Snoke clones, would serve as an enhancer to why he wipes out Snoke when he has a chance with Rey and moves to consolidate his power base.

I’m not going back to TLJ, and am not interested in substantial alterations to suit this movie.

I’m feeling cynical about this movie right now, and I’ll be trying to brew tea using cow urine. This movie might just be best enjoyed with a few drinks and laughter.

Indeed. I had perhaps an optimal first viewing, going on 2 hours of sleep, and in that way it was hilarious. But even at its best it essentially ridicules the viewer for attempting to find greater meaning in the rest of the ST.

I haven’t touched any of my fanedit projects since it was released and that disinterest isn’t abating. Maybe something will change if they release a director’s cut of TROS, and I’ll probably finish Starlight and remain a part of this community, but even so this movie feels like the end of an era, and not in a good way. It makes me feel silly for caring about Star Wars. I could feel gutted and bitter, but it’s more fun to laugh.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Yeah, that was more or less my experience as well.

“Lando, you did it!! YOU DIDDIT!!!”

JEDIT: Hmm, maybe it ridicules the viewer in the opposite fashion TLJ did.

Honestly I have felt this way a little, too. I had some initial ambitious ideas for for the film, but my desire to pursue those has subsided the past few weeks. Maybe seeing what deleted scenes we get might help me regain some interest. At the very least, I think it would be great to focus on making an alternate ending to the film. From Ben’s death to the end, at least.

But honestly Restructured and Starlight have shown me how much can be changed to a film when people with creativity tackle it. Once the home release comes out, and people spend some time thinking about the film, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone comes up with a way to totally reinvent the film in a way that gets people excited. I think some of my interest has gone dormant, but I still think about ideas with the hopes of some kind of eureka moment happening among us that will reawaken that desire. I’ve loved Star Wars as long as I can remember, and I would still love to see a cohesive Saga Edit. Just think we need time to reflect and reevaluate.

The feeling is mutual. Why retcon TLJ because of a faulty storyline. Fix the story first, then see if a retcon is really necessary.

One of the main issues with TROS was the non starwarsy beginning: a music video of Kylo on Mustafar leading to the jolting scenes with the Emperor. The beginning needs breathing room and coherence. This can be fixed.

I need to process and wait before resolving this, but I expect I’ll decide not to try to make this movie into something is seems to have aggressively avoided being, and just help it as much as possible in its goals. I cannot meaningfully guide this film into a direction that I would have wanted it to go.

It’s just the farcical conclusion, the final stage of the dream before waking in which things no longer make any sense.

The first thing I thought of when I saw that alien was Debbie the Bloop from Lost in Space. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was supposed to be an homage:

Apparently the scene with the furry alien was much longer, it was on a mysterious planet with the knights of Ren humming and dancing while the helmet was put back together in a Sith ritual.

Stein, thanks for the list of ideas.

Some I like and agree with, some I’d have to see the movie again to assess, and others might still be worth experimenting with.

The dagger aligning with the wreckage goes along with Rey veering off to go get it and with 3PO specifying a precise approach vector. So it might have to stay as part of the Gordian knot.

I’d have to look again, but I’m not sure how one would remove Rey deflecting the emperor’s lightning at the end and have it make any sense.

I think implying or stating that the Sith fleet needs the Human Resources of the First Order would be awesome. Can it be done, I wonder?

Hey! I’m new here, but I’ve been admiring your work on fanedits for some time now. I was wondering if perhaps there could be a reference to the some of the Sith Eternal being clones? This would explain how they could amass such a force and would tie in nicely with the clones of Snoke (and potential Palpatine) on Exogal. Also it ties in with the prequels and Kylo’s line about a clone army in TFA. Just idea…I don’t know by some crazy trickery maybe you could put Jango’s clones in vats alongside Snoke (or maybe Palpatine clones).

Yeah, I really don’t know. I probably won’t have much more of an idea about it until the BR release.

Reading the novelization wouldn’t hurt either, but they had to wait to write it until the basic plot was locked down super late, I suspect.

I’d seen the post but we’ll have to wait to lay eye on the deleted scenes, and would have even if we had a list.

I don’t know if I should mention this or not, but have you seen the list of scenes cut that we may get come the Blu-ray release. This post should be taken with a HUGE grain of salt, though.
