Kinda sounds like Alfred E. Neuman... "What? Me Worry?"

i was of the opinion that although ROTK won best picture, and there certainly were some films that might have deserved it more, that this was the Academys way of rewarding the ground breaking trilogy as a whole. Having overlooked the 1st 2 films in the previous years (which i thought was scandalous) the Academy instead chose the conclusion of the saga to offer its acceptance of one of the greatest film epics of modern times.

And that is precisely the problem with AMPAS. Why not reward the films and actors on a case-by-case basis, instead of "Here's your Oscar; we're really sorry you didn't win the last 2 times." So much glad-handing and predictability. To paraphrase the Comic Store Guy "Worst. Oscars. Ever."
I also liked Bossk's idea of a Special Achievement Oscar; it would have been much more palatable than giving Best Picture to the weakest film in the trilogy.

I think I'm speaking for both Gundark and myself when I say that it's not as though we didn't like ROTK. We both liked it a lot. However, it was the weakest movie of the LOTR trilogy, far and away. I'm not sure which of the two is his fave, but TTT is mine. And most critics have agreed that while the action in ROTK is great, the story is lacking compared to the first two. So, why award the first film with the biggest award that the other two weren't even nominated for (I don't believe).

Take a look at the list of nominations... the film nominated was The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It wasn't the entire trilogy. So the Academy should have voted with that in mind. If they want to reward Jackson, et al, for their cumulative efforts, then we have a special achievement Oscar for the occasion. With all the griping I've heard about the Oscars this year from critics, I can guarantee that the Academy has lost a ton of credibility as a result of this.

Maybe it's something about sequels with the word "Return" in them: Return of the King, Return of the Jedi, Batman Returns; none of these are terrible films, but they lack something in comparison to the films that immediately precede them.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Hmmm... wonder if it would have been better had it retained the title "Revenge of the Jedi". Revenge is a better word. Except in the whole Ten Commandments scheme of things.

Maybe if Revenge had been retained, we would have seen Luke come dangerously close to the dark side before realising its power and embarking on an attempt to bring his father back. We'll never know.

I thought Chicago was pretty damned good as a movie in itself. I will agree that it was not the best movie of that year, but I think it deserved it more than LOTR:ROTK did. Quite original and just a very well made movie. Despite starring Zellweger and Zeta-Jones.

Nah, 2 years ago the same thing happened with FOTR and A Beautiful Behind (as I like to call it). Anyone who's going to give best adapted screenplay to the man who inflicted us with Batman & Robin deserves an extremely severe punishment.

When you said that, Gundark, I had to go and look him up. Talk about your up and down career.

Behold, the life and works of Akiva Goldsman (as screenwriter)...

Practical Magic (1998)
Lost in Space (1998)
Batman & Robin (1997)

Well, let's see, shall we?

Eliminating the ones that have yet to be released, we are left with...

Beautiful Mind, A (2001) - I liked it.
Practical Magic (1998) - Staunchly refuse to see... ever
Lost in Space (1998) - wasn't too keen on it
Batman & Robin (1997) - hack
Time to Kill, A (1996) - decent the first couple of times you see it. Afterwards, though...
Batman Forever (1995) - hack
Silent Fall (1994) - never heard of
Client, The (1994) - decent, I suppose. But what Grisham adaptation has ever proven great? Runaway Jury is my fave of the bunch.

That puts us at...
Good - 3
Bad - 4
Unknown - 1

Now, if this were a democracy, the unknown category would probably be looked at as an abstaining vote which usually counts in the negative column. So we are now at 3:5. Not looking too good for Mr. Goldsman.
