Terminator 2 Extreme Edition: HD WMV - info wanted

I recently discovered that a 2003 DVD release of T2 included a bonus disc with an HD version of the film for playback on PCs. It was in an encrypted WMV container, and using Windows Media Player it would pull down a 7 day decryption key for playback. From what I’ve gathered it was possible to use that temporary key to completely remove the DRM from the files back then, but now the server is no longer available so that method is no longer usable.
I’ve acquired the encrypted WMVs, and I’ve been trying to decrypt them for the past few days. Does anyone have any insight for how to achieve this? Or maybe somebody has an archive of already decrypted files?
Every HD release of T2 has been notably flawed in one way or another, so I’m very interested to see how this version stacks up. It’s also possible that the audio and/or video can help in any current or future fan restorations. Either way I’d say it’s important to preserve and archive this version of the film, especially if future releases continue to disappoint.

I saw the file a number of years ago. The compression artefacts are such that it’s noticeably inferior to both the subsequent Blu-ray releases; the SkyNet edition (with egregious DNR) and the 2015 edition from Lionsgate (same master but much less DNR).

Good luck unlocking the file, but I’ll by a curio you won’t return to actually watch imho.

I tried decrypting it years ago, but to no avail. Let me know how it goes for you.

Have you tried using something like FairUse4WM 1.3?

That requires a temporary key from the auth server to decrypt it. Since the server is no longer up I don’t there’s any way to use that.

Okay, I’ll dig around and see if I can’t find something useful.

Apologies for the necropost; has there been any updates to crack this Easter Egg?

I bought this T2 Extreme Edition DVD when it was first released in 2003, but the bonus HD version for PC playback has always been problematic for me. At the time, my PC was under powered to play it without stuttering.

A few years later I tried again with a more powerful PC build and it was glorious! Seems like the included player app was buggy though, and many years later I loaded the disc again on yet a newer PC build, but had no luck getting the file to play any more.

If your crop is water, what, exactly, would you dust your crops with?

Nope. The auth server that stored the decryption keys is down, so there’s not really any way to crack it. Unless someone cracked it while the server was up and archived it, this version is pretty much lost. Though from what I’ve heard from people it’s pretty much the same master used on early blu-rays so not much of value is lost here.

To decrypt T2 Terminator 2 Extreme Edition High definition WMV files (from T2 Extreme DVD 4756 disc 2 / barcode of dvd case 065935147565 - looks like canadian release / barcode on metal slipcover 012236140986 ) you need FreeMe2 program/application and SID key “sdhtUExMi/atMjFIxpXnFPQBdio=” or “LCqa6j9UTtiPj3FZKZ0pFnIYzaM=” (please watch out for quotes - remove quotes from commands etc.).

  1. download freeme2 program/application (https://sourceforge.net/projects/freeme2/files/freeme2/FreeMe2-0.4/FreeMe2_win32-0.4.zip/download or https://altushost-swe.dl.sourceforge.net/project/freeme2/freeme2/FreeMe2-0.4/FreeMe2_win32-0.4.zip or search on the project website: https://sourceforge.net/projects/freeme2/ - date of access 2021.09),
  2. extract freeme2 archive (unzip),
  3. copy wmv files from dvd to freeme2 directory,
  4. start command line (use keys win+r, then enter cmd),
  5. change directory to freeme2 (by using cd command) i.e “cd C:\Users\Mike\Desktop\Freeme2”,
  6. run freeme2 with s and filename parameters i.e “FreeMe2.exe -s T2_Part1.wmv”,
  7. enter SID key " sdhtUExMi/atMjFIxpXnFPQBdio=" (or “LCqa6j9UTtiPj3FZKZ0pFnIYzaM=”) and wait for decrypted file i.e. “Freed-T2_Part1.wmv” (file should be created in freeme2 directory). Watch decrypted file in windows media player (WMP 9 or 10 should be ok).
  8. repeat step 6-7 with other wmv files from T2 dvd changing filename parameter (i.e. FreeMe2.exe -s T2_Part2.wmv)

I am a fan of SF movies and I bought T2 Terminator 2 Extreme Edition specially to check that high definition version of the movie and I was sad and crushed when I discovered that they used drm protected files and because of this they take away possibility to use/watch it. I post this information for other fans of SF and movies generally.

Cool! I thought this would be something gone forever. Glad there actually is a way to decrypt these.
Kinda wish I didn’t delete the files now.

If someone here is from Youtube generation (people who have videos for everything 😃 ) please make a video tutorial. I described the procedure because I tried her yesterday on my copy of T2 EE 😃 and it works.

Just bought the disc to see if I can free the files from the harsh early 2000s encryption itself! I’ll try and upload it somewhere for all to see when it arrives
