I wonder IF Disney ever decides to release the OOT, whether they’ll also decide keep the Fox fanfare or not.

I know it’s minor, but to me that’s just such an essential part of the whole Star Wars experience.

Next preservation might be the SE Trilogy which would be fine with me because even those were botched for the 2004 DVDs.

It is arguable whether it is a minor concern. I know I feel it would be quite a shame if it was taken out. Either way, it is definitely at least a valid concern, as Disney has already done it once with their digital downloads of all the films but Star Wars “Episode IV: A New Hope” (as they like to call it), as that is Fox’s property still. They could well do it again, which would be very sad, since that’d still be them altering our perception of history, Fox was the only studio that went out on a limb to produce Star Wars, sure they wouldn’t be putting out the home video version of it (well, I suppose this concern only would take hold after 2020), but their important role in making the original films should not be diminished because ownership changed hands 30 - 40 years later. If Disney ends up wanting to mess with the opening credit, they they should do their own logo first, followed by Fox’s logo with fanfare, then the untouched movie.

Again, if projects like this force their hand early, before all the rights change over, then the question of Fox fanfare inclusion would likely be moot with Fox handling the physical distribution.

I’m having a hard time finding solid download links. Anyone got an open copy on Drive? I’m on Android so a simple MP4 would be great.

If they released it before 2020 when the distribution rights for sw revert to Disney, it would most likely be all original with the fox logo, but with a new hope on the crawl.

After 2020 they’d take the fox logo out and either have the original lucasfilm logo silent or add the new lucasfilm logo.

I don’t think they’d have that new lucasfilm fanfare either way though. There was such negative backlash to that from the digital release. Notice how the lucasfilm logo was silent for TFA. I think they planned on using it for TFA but because there was so much negative backlash they just decided to have it silent.

First, do you have a link to just this Lucasfilm fanfare? I, obviously, did not participate in the digital versions, so I don’t know what you are referring to. Nevermind, I found it; it sucks.

Second, what makes you say they would, pre 2020, put “Episode IV: A New Hope” in the crawl? The GOUT didn’t have it, and that was the most recent official original version put out under Lucasfilm/Fox.

Like I said, I’m having a hard time. There are many bogus links on Google. Be useful, not sarcastic.

The digital versions weren’t the “unaltered” versions so they had no real obligation to include the Fox logo and fanfare. If they were going to market an “unaltered” version, it wouldn’t technically be unaltered if it didn’t have it. Also, they would have to work out some kind of deal with Fox for the original at least anyway. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fox requested the logo be kept in all three and I don’t see why Disney would think it’s a big deal. Everyone knows Fox was the original distributor for Star Wars, there’s no hiding that history and it doesn’t change the fact that Disney owns it now.

I fear Fox and Disney’s lawyers will come down on these like a ton of brick. I’m always afraid of fan-edit downloads of films I’m interested in because of legal repercussions. Which is a damn shame, since I am intrigued by a lot of the ones out there.

Well they aren’t going to come after you, that’s for sure. And I doubt they really care about this anyway. They never have in the past. They only might do something if they really do release an official version of the original. And I gotta say, it sure seems that way if Mike Verta is getting meetings with executives and another restoration team is showing off Star Wars footage in their demos.

It is against the rules to share links here. There may be bad links around, I don’t know, but good ones are indeed found easily through Google as the files are on public torrent trackers.

But Disney is notorious for removing old logos of both their own company and previous distributors of their older films and replacing them with updated logos.

Fox only has the distribution rights to ANH at the moment, and those rights revert to Disney in 2020, therefore it really doesn’t matter what FOX wants.

And if I’m being perfectly frank, the only people who really care about the logos and consider them to be as important as anything else in the film are us. People like us on these forums. General audiences do not care nearly as much and the studios know it. I wish I could be optimistic about it, but that’s the sad reality of it.

Disney would most definitely be willing to take out the Fox logo for a release. Assuming they wait until after 2020, fox will have had nothing to do with the release, and disney does not want people thinking they did.

The digital release removed the fox logo on everything except ANH which is only because they legally couldn’t. The only reason it was still on the most recent bluray release is that it was just repackaged discs from 2011 and they didn’t want to have to strike brand new blu rays just for the sake of removing the logo.

And if and when they do an OOT release omitting the Fox logo, general audience reactions will be. “They took out the Fox logo and fanfare, which is kinda sad, but really that’s such a small detail who really cares.” Like I can already see the YouTube reviews in my head.

This would be, without a doubt, absolutely the most simple fan-edit to do. Cut-and-paste, save.

Actually Fox has the distribution rights for ANH in perpetuity. The other ones revert in 2020.

Oh, looks like you are correct in that. My mistake. Either way, the point stands. At least for Empire and Jedi.

Author

Yeah, but I think it would be cruel and unusual torture of OCD sufferers to release a trilogy set that has the fanfare/logo in one movie but a different one in the other two.

Even if Disney does release the OOT on blu-ray with the Fox logo, they probably won’t include the original alien subtitles in the first and third movies in the original font and will instead have player-generated subs. In my opinion, these would be altered versions of the films.

Your best option is Usenet. The newsgroup is a.b.starwars and the password is negative1
Your download speed will be full strength unlike the slowness of a torrent. I had a solid 23mps and got it in a few hours. The restoration is remarkable and it was so hypnotic to watch something unaltered by Lucas’ psycho additions. This group is without a doubt, Extraordinary.

I think Fox has New Hope forever, in perpetuity, and loses the other 5 completely in '20.

Yes this has been established and I was incorrect in my original statement.

If everything else is fine about the eventual official release, it should be very easy for everyone to replace the logos and subtitles using free tools.
