Did anyone else notice a slight jump cut around the 20 second mark? I hope it was just me and not indicative of missing/damaged frames. Either way, it looks great.

I can't wait to see the finished project! =D

Without defending compression, I still think people should realize that Star Wars is much softer than images we're used to today, and was NOT particularly sharp even by 1977 standards.  They shot the film on Bausch & Lomb lenses which were not even top tier then, and there's no getting around that.  The Lowry restoration was highly sharpened.  You will never find a print approaching that level of sharpness, and that includes Tech prints, which are only 1 step from the original negative (O-Neg>Dye Master>Print).  Even at 4K, when the grain becomes the size of nail heads and is razor sharp, the film is just softer than we're used to.  What's interesting is that when you project it, it never feels soft.  In fact, it "feels" sharper than scrutiny of any individual frame would suggest.

I liked vimeo, why did you switch?  This new site made me watch a full 30 sec commercial.

The video itself looks great!  I'm so psyched!

^seconded the rec to stick with vimeo.  Dailymotion has always been a half-broken website, and I'm sure the quality's not as high.

Here's another sample : 1 minute and 30 second.

It looks a little darker on the site, however, the resolution should be 1080p.

We are not sure what compression they are applying to the original clip though. =========================================================== http://www.veoh.com/watch/v62846381a9BFwPpN

Just a heads up, if you try to download the video, the Veoh web player will try to unload a bunch of crapware on your computer during installation. I hate these deceptive programs. Is there any way to get the video without Veoh?

well I was expecting it to look like my 16mm STM

or the ESB 35mm transfer Theatre Presentation

The bottom line is I was expecting pen marks, dirt, hair, splice marks, reel changes etc.... Bottom line is this is years and years old, I expect a terrible shape.

Someone took care of this.

I have a 35 mm in the can of the THING and the color is very washed out after sitting in the cans

I imagine that Harmy's watching this thinking:

"Hmm, higher quality Leia hologram."

Here we go again! ;)

Actually, what I was thinking watching this was: Cool, now everyone can see I wasn't making up the vertical scanlines :-)

Also, I used the NetVideoHunter plugin for Firefox and it downloaded fine :-)

Seconded. My local theatre shows a 35mm print of the Director's Cut of Alien that looks worse than this, and it's only from 2003.

Thanks, NetVideoHunter seems to work fine! Better than Video Download Helper in this case.

I don't mean to go off-topic but I just thought I'd ask; is there enough colour left in your 35mm print of The Thing to assist in the discussion as to whether the BD colours are theatrically accurate?

See this thread:

Apologies again for the off-topic response.
