Well happy to say I was wrong and you learn something new everyday. So you can copy DTheather with a work around. I noticed some references to using a Samsung T165, which I have, does anyone know how the exact process works (perhaps PM me)? If I can do it, I can also make a 1:1 copy. I'd like to backup all my tapes.
Does anyone have a list of the decoded tapes? Is one of them The Ring? I wanted to make a copy of that DVHS, since the tape is rumored to have the original theatrical blue color timing vs the Blu-ray's green color timing.
I believe that the D-theater tapes started at 25 GB and ran up to 50 GB and the bitrate maxed out at 28.2 but floated in the mid 20s at a constant bitrate. Alien was probably 25 GB. The back of the tapes lists a AC3, PCM and DTS soundtrack so if accurate you should have that in the TS.
That would be pretty bad ass if you could do a 1:1 copies. Whats the list of movies you have for DTheater?
Sorry for the late response. I have a newborn and she takes a lot of my time lately. I have:
Alien: DC
Die Hard
Fight Club
Man On Fire
Master And Commander
True Lies
X-Men
X2
The JVC Demo Tape
I have Terminator 2 but I can't find it at the moment.
I bought them all back when Dtheater tapes were "popular". I still want to get The Ring from ebay
Excellent list of movies and i do like The Ring as well.
Thanks PDB

I do have a D-Theater rip of The Ring on my HD. It looks really nice and I still love the movie. It's a guilty please of mine along with The Grudge series and Ring 2.

Ok i also found other links and all are online for The Ring DTheater.
Daredevil on D-Theater would be nice too. I believe it's the theatrical cut.
quick question
is there any noticable picture difference between the original and THX remastered release of Die Hard?
i'm hoping someone preserves the 35mm Stereo track from the original LD and couples it with the 5.1 remix that is reportedly based on the 70mm print. Pretty sure Jonno was in the process of capturing the 35mm audio last i heard
Hoping to see this new 4K remastered print at the weekend :)

I forgot about that, it's playing near me too.
If the 4K master is as good as when I went to see Ghostbusters in 4K, then it will probably be awesome.

I have that laserdisc and can preserve it if Jonno doesn't.
Ok i finally got the DTheater of The Ring, and here's some comparisons shots from the blu-ray and DTheater....
Blu-ray color grading is horrible... D-Theater is the way to go!

I'm not sure if you're interested in this Andrea, but Dawn of the Dead has a recent Japanese release with a new transfer!
http://www.ghoulbasement.com/2013/12/second-update-on-japanese-dawn-of-dead.html
The release, though, is not without its flaws. It is green (maybe teal?) shifted, and it was encoded using RGB levels which makes contrast levels too low. That being said, it has grain intact and substantially more detail than the Anchor Bay-based BDs.
It should be quite an easy fix to you or any other forum members here. I played around myself with the caps, and the color is still fully intact underneath the green. The transfer hasn't been regraded so much that its unsalvageable. Remove the green and you have a very saturated image that is somewhat blue (which I can buy is the original color timing). Contrast adjustment should be a cinch.
Only issue is the price. Without shipping, the individual release for the theatrical cut is already $36.
That being said, I'd be excited if anyone had a go at this. It looks like it's ripe for BD-customization.

Hey, happy new year, guys :D
Andrea, what happened to the Beauty and the Beast's [ruLes] project?
My HDDs are almost full, I can't delete more files anymore... I need a new 2TB internal disc; plus, I finished EFNY lately and I spent a lot of time trying to do it using the Slice Technique, but failed... so I promised to do also an EFNY fan-edit to be forgiven... but BATB is still here, (almost) ready to be released... don't worry, it will see the day of light, even if... I read lately that it seems the laserdisc is too bright, so maybe I should make some "darkening" test to see if it will look better...
Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com
it's ok, at least someday we'll have the (as close as possible) correct version.
btw, loved the picture hahahah
I have a new entry for future projects:
MINORITY REPORT
BD has a different color grading in comparison to DVD and HDTV - avsforum
also, look at this screenshot comparison: in the HDTV version, should those reflections on the computer screen be there, or they are only MPEG2 noise?
I have both DVD and BD, but didn't find (yet) the exact frame...
Does it worth a preservation?

i remember reading that on all home video versions the factory scene was re-editing because it was too similar to Attack of the Clones
never found a bootleg copy to confirm

I've been loving what you've been doing with your color grading. I just watched "The Thing" last weekend and it looked wonderful - better than I've ever seen it look.
But personally, after looking at those comparison shots, I feel that this time, the blu-ray, for once, has better color. The DVD and broadcast versions look very unnatural - the teal/greenish look that they usually add to so many blu-ray catalog films. For once, they actually improved the color on the blu-ray. I have no idea which is "correct", but after reading about the blu-ray transfer, it seems that Steven Spielberg worked closely during the transfer. To me I like the results much better than the DVD colors.
It's a great film, so I would say yes it would have been worth it if they actually harmed the film on blu-ray. But this time I think they did an excellent job and the colors look terrific to me. There are so many others that look awful on blu-ray thanks to poor color timing choices, I just think the effort would be better served on a title that really needs it.
Yesterday I watched "Minority Report" on BD, and I agree that colors looks very natural... a bit too much natural! (^^,)
I mean, I don't love the Teal&Orange trend, where all the movies color palette look the same, but this time I think the DVD has the right colors, even if they are not natural... it's like "Halloween": the 35th Anniversary BD has natural colors, and they are not wrong, but the THX DVD color grading serves better the mood of the movie. Got what I mean?
Plus, it's not only my opinion; there are many that praise "Minority Report" as a very good edition, *except* the color grading that, even if very good, looses a bit the mood of a sci-fi movie like this.
Just my 2¢... (€0.02!)
I agree with you that there are many other movies with ugly color grading that need a restoration, but "Minority Report" is one I like, I have both on BD and DVD, and it's not on any restoration list, so...
Of course, any other title that should be restored could be posted here!
EDIT: I started the new Minority Report [spoRv] project right now!
